The education system is complex . We have used a public system for many years with great success. We do need change to take us into the 21st century. Giving taxpayer dollars to a private religious school is not workable. They may be doing this to break the unions hold . Union teachers are paided better than non union teachers . Instead of forcing teachers to work for less pay . Maybe we should use them to improve the system . Many places the local school board runs the system . We should push for change and work to use modern technology. Less teachers and more technology.

They even went so far as to call concerned parents "terrorists" and request that Homeland Security put a terrorist threat tag on them. Is that doing their best for the students? If a child misses a lot of school days, and instruction does not accommodate that, they may never catch up.
Kids are developing mentally and growing older each year, and some are advancing, others not , despite their age. . Illness or family problems also takes its toll on learning.
Why isn't this talked about more in terms of
Individual learning needs verses data as a whole in private or charter schools with less children?
    Kids are kids.

Unions inevitably become about power and influence. Teacher's unions are no different. Teachers unions do not have the interests of the students at the top of their priorities. And school boards have long been political tools of elites with zero concern for what parents want for their children. The reason there is so much resistance to what the vast majority want is because school choice would completely undermine the monopoly that these people have over the education of future generations and the power it carries. Just consider what it means for a strong majority of the population to support something in a democracy and yet it can't get ahead in legislation. It's a clear sign of corruption in the system.

Basically My Girls were bored with the easy education Public schools offer and my girls refused the indoctrination that public schools were forcing upon them, so the school forced a State level recorded learning disability on them. Today 2024 Both of my oldest girls are Black belts, one is an electrician and one is a Chef, making 5X the salary of a College Professor. Whitmer promised the veto when the bills passed through the Legislature last month and axed the bills Friday. In the past, she compared the effort to unsuccessful voucher programs championed by school choice advocates, including west Michigan's influential DeVos family.

Nope. Unions are obsolete and not needed any longer, so no, unions (especially teachers unions) are not great. Start there ...
I support school choice if my tax dollars are redirected to the school I choose, and away from the public schools.

Unions were given all the chances and then some and blew-it so bad they still can't find a Union Leaders body even to this day! Great concept, like most organizations it started out rather simple, straight forward a person would join a Union who protected that persons career choice and paid Union Dues monthly for their services simple right? " WRONG " until the Unions became wealthy practically over-night from the workers monthly payments in other words the payments were much higher collectively than the actual cost of the Unions promised services that built-up great wealth in the hands of the Unions and it is because of this wealth that started the greed and corruption that eventually destroyed the idea. Wealth, greed, power and influence between the Unions and the Corporations they tried to control, sound familiar, just look at the level of corruption in Government today no such thing as " To Big To Fail ". Actually the larger the Corporations better known as the Big Box businesses get the more likely they are to fail just ask Walmart, Kmart while Home Depot and Lowes who now have one nostril above the water-line. Do not fool your selves the Teachers Union has once again repeated history, you are witnessing the down fall to something that has already crashed and burned while we sit here and listen to these 4 people lie with a straight face! It's time to face reality Public schools are as broken as the Federal Government, as broken as the House Education Committee especially Teachers Union all proved beyond a shadow of a doubt did in fact get too big and failed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it wasn't for unions, employers don't want to pay a decent wage. They use employees and pay slave wages. UNIONS built this country. THANK unions for the 40 hour work week and paid overtime, vacation days and sick time off. Thank unions for workman's compensation when injured at work......obviously you don't know a damn thing about the history of unions and what they achieved for the working people.

The problem is that wealthy parents are the only parents that will benefit from subsidizing private schools. Wealthy and middle-class parents don't want "lower-class" or "poor" kids in schools with their kids. After all isn't that the flight from public education?

    • @siggyincr7447

As far as I've seen many charter schools and pricey private schools have tuition programs to encourage the admission of children from low income families. I'm not sure that argument holds up. I understand that many in public education say it does. But I'm not so convinced. Not to mention school choice has little to do with elite private schools.
The other, and more legitimate, concern seems to be that good schools will cherry pick the good students and leave public schools with the rejects. And that might be. The question is, does keeping the classes mixed in terms of academic fitness really benefit society over allowing for a segregation based on a school's preferences for scholastic merit and ability to maintain discipline? The instinctual response is that the students that get left over to attend public schools will be essentially doomed to a life of underachievement. And so, school choice isn't fair to those not lucky or privileged enough to make it into the better schools. But the counter-argument, that forcing gifted children to drag themselves through school surrounded by classmates that aren't their equal in academic terms forces them to become bored and demotivated, ultimately depriving them of reaching their potential, rarely seems to get mentioned.
In the end I think this is a matter of the state overstepping it's bounds. No one can spend your tax dollars better than you can. School vouchers would inevitably lead to an improvement in school performance in the metrics that parents value. I think you will be hard pressed to find anyone more interested in the future of students than their parents (on average of course). Poorly run private schools will fail as they always have, and poorly run public schools would finally have a reliable metric for when they are in need of new management.

We need to upgrade public schools and call for better performance! If you take money away from the public schools the children left in these schools will be left with poor outcomes. There are not enough private schools for all the children! So let's help ALL SCHOOLS do a better job!

Yeah been hearing that tired old line for 50 years and guess what with TRILLIONS spent on public schools (the US spends 500% more on public schools than any other nation) our children are rated near the bottom in academic success.
No we need to abolish the DOE, we need to ban teacher's unions and we need to actually focus on education not indoctrination.

Public schools are failing because of the government.
You can look at schools in Detroit, they spend more money per student than the national average and their results are some of the worst.
Throwing money at the public school system won’t fix it.
School choice is the answer. Schools should have to compete for their students, the best schools will grow and have the most students.
