I went to the local college for evening classes to learn how to plaster, 12 weeks, twice a week, 3 hours per session. First session was pretty much dedicated to taking mix off the spot board, onto the hand board, moving it around and off and onto the trowel. Session two was exactly what you’ve shown in this video. We used a similar mix with lime in for weeks, rendering the block walls, scraping it off onto a pile on the floor and starting again 😂 We then moved onto boarding, beading and skimming with multi-finish. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process and can just about skim a wall 😉
Your continued passion to demonstrate simple and effective plastering concepts and tips to all abilities is fully appreciated and acknowledged!!! A) In this clip, you mentioned the ‘training’ mix can be applied and subsequently removed from plasterboard. Do you think there is a limit to the number of repeated applications to such boards ( unlike brick or masonry substrates that don’t degrade)? B) Presumably, the mix can likewise be used to train on ceilings too which are more challenging? Many thanks again for promoting the craft and providing accessibility to everyone who wants to learn.
I sat and enjoyed very part of that video he explains exactly what you need to do, I paid £150 to do a two day class and never got told how to do it so easily, thanks for the very informative video 👍👊
Bloody hell, sand and plasticiser! I honestly thought you were using multi finish and had some magic potion. Nice one Kirk. Thanks for all your great videos 🙏
I’m a decorator I I have to say I enjoy your videos immensely I think I could say without doubt this is one of the best videos on RUclips I’ve ever seen
Colleges do use this but it's LSM, a mixture of lime and sand with the lime being the plasticiser. This is used for training for all levels. It never sets, just dries out. It's then knocked back off and put back in a roller pan mixer, water added and used again. Great vid by the way, as always!
I watch plenty of plastering videos (never too old to learn 😉) and I can't recall one showing rolling the trowel so clearly. So simple and straight to the point, great video 👍
Perfect! This is what I’ve needed! Now I can actually take my time to learn some movement skills instead of being under the pressure of plaster setting! Nice one for this.
kirk, when i did my one day a week at the building college in south east London back in the 1980's the apprentice brickies used a mix of sand lime water and washing up liquid (think plasticiser was too pricey) as apprentice plasterers we had to scratch coat the wall in this mix before floating with sand and cement so that the wall could be scraped off after and be used by the next bloke,,,, the walls and mock up rooms got more complicated in design with bays, angles, columns etc as you progressed through the apprenticeship... i really looked forward to college days as it was a day off from being shouted at 🤣🤣
You are the man. Do you enjoy plastering as much as you appear to in the video? I'm a 44 year old mechanic and I'm thinking about switching trades as I hate the motor trade. Do you think I'm too old to try and make a go of plastering to feed my wife and 4 kids? Cheers for all the videos mate 👍
At the age of 44 I'm 49 now! I personally would not recommend taking up plastering as a living unless your fit as a fiddle! But having been on the spanners myself in my 20s-30s I can understand why you hate it!😒 👍🏻
We used lime and sand when training in college. That way we also got the benefit of learning how to rub up and finish a render job. Knock it off and mix it back through with water and use it again
What an absolute legend, great advise last of a dying breed , l love anything construction based plastering is an art and all about muscle memory will be trying this defo . I salute you my friend and thank you
I’ve been plastering for 10 months my end result is perfect, it’s just learning that roll of the trowel to make me more efficient and to be able spread it better and be quicker
Kirk. We do teach this in College. Lime and sand recycled constantly in our mill. Also teach the students to take off the board and lay on the wall the same as you did there. Maybe teaching will be for you in the future?
Sorry mate I should of gave more context. I had a lad the was in college, he said they were using lime but it had loads of rocks in it where it was setting and also was a nightmare on the skin. What I ment was, surely it would be cheaper to used sand and Feb?
One of my subscribers asked me the other day can he make a mix with just plasticiser instead of the mix in my video using lime and sand, said i dont know coz never tried, ill point him to your video Kirk👍
An alternative mix is one part clay to 3 parts sand. The mix doesn't set, it has to dry which gives plenty of time to play around with it. The advantage of it is that when you have it mastered you are a clay plasterer, which has a lot of advantages over gypsum...
Next try one leg on a wobbly step ladder, the other leg on a kitchen worktop, plaster on top of kitchen wall units. Following week plaster inside a velux window light tunnel from double extending ladders above a stairwell in the height of summer 👍
@@Onthetrowel top man do you have a link thank you, Found best sand was Plastering sand, which has no gritty bits . Drink from London when I get home 👍

Hi first of all great videos, really useful for starting to learn how to renovate my own damned crumbling walls. Secondly I wanted to ask about a specific mix AI told me about that could go well with an interior brick wall because it's breathable and compatible with the bricks of my old house. It's a mix of lime and gypsum that was used in Spain, do you have any experience with it?
ridiculous quotes for Plasterer all stairs and landing then realised the whole house pretty much needs to do so decided to buy all the gear but have no idea would definitely be given this,a go thanks 👍
Don't do it mate it's expensive because it's very hard/difficult it's an art just pay the money ha. Your only going to attempt it mess it all up waste money on all the gear then have to ring a plasterer anyway to come fix it 😂 good look fella
@@markrobson9894 Definitely good advice I can plaster to a fairly good standard! Bathroom/Kitchen fitter so could definitely do it but a bit slower! But as a beginner don't bother trying a house on your own it will bite you on the arse and cost you double! 😉👍🏻
@@kevinlawes591 yip pal I'm 37 been plastering 20 year it's took its toll on my body my sciatica is mental shoulder problems hands etc it's a tough old job looks easy watching an experianced plaster doing it believe me it ain't any ways enough of the complaining it's gave me a canny life so far but I'm done this year I've found property as the way forward 😀

My first plastering experience was using hard wall and then finish over the top :P I learned the hard way, only some light sanding and some small filling required when done, I'd give my self a 5/10 :P I Since I was also the decorator, I forgave my self the extra work :P
What a bloody mess, I could do that, only kidding big man. Thats a great idea for practicing, I bet that piece of wall is very clean now! Now you'll have to do the rest. I'll practice on the facing brick wall next door when the lady goes to work.
Hi kirk, when I started my apprenticeship 30 years ago, we used sand and lime at college, exact same principle, it could be scrapped off the wall remixed with water an reused
Hey mate I know, the reason I'm saying it is because the lime is starting to set as soon as the air can get to it, also it's expensive and can burn the skin of the collage kids. Bit of Feb is a fraction of the price and, never sets and can't hurt you 🙂 Imo it's a better way to save money and teach, also if they practice at home then it won't stain the wall
I FOUND THAT IF I USE FAIRY LIQUID JUST PUT ENOUGH WATER TO HOLD TOGETHER BUT IT'S NOT MIXED THEN ADD THE WASHING UP LIQUID TO MIXTURE SO IT'S NICE AND SOFT I DO THE SAME WHEN MIXING MORTOR FOR FLAGGING AND BRICKS PLUS POINTING UP AND GIVES PLENTY OF TIME TO DO IT THEN IT SETS HARD AFTER A DAY TRY THIS ONE SEE HOW YOU LIKE IT 👍
