An Awesome Spray Rig for Set Neck Guitars
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 май 2023
- Designing a good setup to spray set neck and neck through guitars is not easy. They take up a lot of space and are probably very expensive to produce. Fortunately, I have found one that looks like it is going to work very well, and has a reasonable footprint in the shop. I love the bolt on neck rig that these guys make, so I'm really looking forward to working with this set neck version.

Whoa, SpinTwist guy solved the set neck question. I've had my eye on this paint rig design since I first saw the Texas Toast guys in Colorado introduced the SpinTwist on their channel. The fact that the fella behind SpinTwist developed the rig after being less than completely satisfied with Stewmac's rig is very relatable. My work background and education is mainly in industrial designer and it seems like SpinTwist guy and I went through the experience of buying Stewmac's rig and using that at roughly the same time. I wish I could have bought a SpinTwist rig instead of the Stewmac's.
He has indeed come up with a good alternative. I’m impressed with the two models. And he’s adding a set screw to the other version to make airbrushing easier.
These 'spiffy' rigs sure do have a great use and purpose...makes me think those rigs will soon be just as important as all the other tools you use and depend upon to save time and make your job easier.
I agree; they make a huge difference.
I don't believe I have ever heard anyone use the word nifty. That's hilarious. That rig would be useful for any kind of small woodwork, I think. Good for delicate pieces you shouldn't scratch. Very helpful. Thanx.
I’m rather fond of that word haha.
This is perfect!
As always, another great video!!!
Thank you
Thanks for the video Brad - knew they had one but have not seen this set-neck model - Cheers
Cheers Dan
Love it!
Definitely a Good Design I’ve got the bolt on Rig And thanks for the Tips Love Your Channel 👍👍🎶🎶🎸
Glad you like it John
You all ready was doing magnificent paint jobs before I can't see in messing with perfection ,I suppose it will make it easier on you although. Can't wait to see you use it. Good video.
It will speed things up for me for sure, which is important.
360 degrees of awesome 👌, better than anything I could engineer! Sweet setup!
Cheers Dustin
@Brad Angove Cheers to you as well sir!
@BradAngove Hey Brad, I'm just messaging you to make sure that you're okay. I always look forward to your videos because you make such awesome content. You don't have to make videos, no pressure! I just wanted make sure that you're doing okay! Best wishes as always! Also, not sure why my username changed. It's Dustin 😆
It’s thoughtful of you to check in Dustin. I’m alright. Things have been a bit off the rails over the last few weeks, but I should be back at it right away.
@BradAngove Thanks Brad! Happy to hear that you are okay! Like I said, no pressure! It's Father's Day today in the US. So Happy Father's Day!
That looks very useful; I have a similar item called the Freehand Holder from Stewmac. it is used in tandem with my guitar repair vise, although any vise would work. It only costs $120 and is easy to store in between use (hanging on the wall).
Nice; I’ll have to take a look at that. Although I don’t have a guitar repair vice.
I have the stewmack version that comes with screw and set neck attachments, used it to make my Solo Beatles Bass kit, was great, but this definitely fixes that, I have a spinning harbor freight vice I frog tape ziploc bags to to protect it from overspray
Oddly enough I haven’t seen the stewmac version.
I might go ahead and build something like that. Just put a stop instead of a bearing keeper from going. Closer to the table and you've got the same twist ability and put the same thing at the top of the post and the legs are just pieces of pipe with Pipe anchors
I do like the footprint and it is going to be pretty handy. I guess I kinda like it l o l
Like the other version, simple, yet effective.
I like the other version too. Can’t really compare them though; they are for different purposes. You couldn’t use the other one to paint a set neck guitar.
Hey Brad. How’s things? I’m pretty sure I’ve seen that spraying rig before but it wasn’t used for spray painting it was a medieval torture device. They would connect you to it then rotate the handle in all directions until you became violently ill. It was very effective.
Use it to twist people in half?
@@BradAngove Or into a human corkscrew.
Now you know how old I really am!
@@SpinTwistPaintRig Torture device or no that rig is a great design. If I purchased one I would motorise it with some stepper motors and an Arduino or raspberry pi and use a Bluetooth remote or some Bluetooth foot pedals to control it. Again, really nice design, the only thing I would be worried about is getting paint on that red tabletop. It is really eye catching, would be a shame to ruin it.
It comes with cardboard shields for the red table.
deepen the notches, and its a good piece!
For sure
It’ll probably work very effectively with the full weight of a set neck guitar in there instead of this.
Hey Brad , nice product , it looks a little wobbly though !
I didn’t find it wobbly, but I guess I could have taken the time to level the legs.
@@BradAngove Thanks Brad , I love the idea , great jig for spraying for sure !
hello your videos are nice, I am wondering if I can spray paint some color patterns on already painted guitar with clear coat or do Ineed to remove the paint before.?
You don’t generally need to remove it, but you do need to sand it and clean it so the new paint can stick.
Love your videos, Brad. do you have one about drop filling a nitroscellulose finish? I'm using Solo Clear Coat Gloss. Thanks!
Is that the one from Oxford supply?
@@BradAngove It is.
I don’t have a video on that, but it’s nitrocellulose lacquer so it will adhere to itself. That makes it very easy to drop fill. If it’s a small hole you can use a toothpick.
@@BradAngove Thanks for responding. I'm sure I can do this.
I do wonder if you'd get paint inconsistencies or a blotchy result due to the rotation handle when the handle is at the 90 degree angle?
Is your concern that the handle would be in the way? I’d say just orient the handle such that it follows the direction you are painting and it shouldn’t be an issue at all.
Hello. Love your vids. I'm trying to purple flake a tele but all of a sudden the nitrocellulose lacquer is pulling the paint off the flake leaving orange splotches everywhere. What am I doing wrong?
Are you using nitrocellulose lacquer throughout? Or do you have something else in there?
Any ideas on doing neck through guitars, that isn't simply hanging it (which is not ideal for runs)?
Same as this. A set neck and a neck trough guitar re handled the same for painting.
Hey man, do you have any updated product or technique recommendations for polishing clearcoat? I saw a video from you on it, but it's 9 years old, and wondered if anything has been updated since then.
I did a Joe Satriani-style artwork job on a guitar (w/Sharpies), then used the Car-Rep 2K spray clearcoat. It's all bumpy, which I assume is the "orange peel" issue that I hear talked about.
I’ve done many polish jobs since then on various projects on my channel.
@@BradAngove Ok, the search only brings up one from 9 years ago and I think another from 5. I'll just do a general YT search to find more.
Have a look at the last video or two from any of my more recent projects if you want to see me do it on any of those. That part of the process is, of course, always near the end.
I don't care for that one too much that other one that you were using looks like it worked out a lot better
The other one is for bolt in necks, which are much easier to deal with. It’s a lot easier to design a spray stand of those.
Hey brad when ya gonna do a how to scallop neck video?
Been asking for about 2 yrs now bro. Sure other channel have a how to but its not one of your videos. Big difference
Did you see my partial scalloped neck on the telecaster I did with the metallic paint job?
@@BradAngove
Heck no. When did you do that?
Link?

Brad you have that new baby look lol....wiped out....
Yeah, I haven’t been bored haha.
Baby showering station. Lol
Does anyone need to be told this will only work with Center-Block Archtops? There are a great many guitars, Full Hollows, some models of Gretsch, Flattops etc. etc. etc. which will still, as far as I know, need the screw in the bottom strap button hole. Just saying. I know you know this as do I.
Thank for pointing that out. I’m not sure everyone would realize that (or think about it) at first glance.
@@BradAngove I'd hate for some poor sod to put screws through the back a nice instrument. Sometimes people do not think ahead. I often play Devil's Advocate and point out the obvious or ask questions I already know the answer to because I realize there are some that need to hear it from the teacher. You get the red shiny apple for the day. Teach. Thanks for your time and your videos. I love them.
Good grief, what an over engineered, expensive solution. I have been building set neck jazz guitars for years using a self designed "rotisserie" DIY system connected to a Black & Decker Workmate table. Next to zero cost and works perfectly every time.
Glad to hear it Brian. It’s nice to have options.
clearly your still as d umb as you were in your old videos years back
Haha wow, now that is an impressively pointless comment. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the video brother. Another informative one. I have contacted these guys about getting one of these!! We shall see!✌️🤍🖖
Cheers Todd
@@BradAngove They're sending me one too!! Thank you brother. I owe you so much thanks man. If I can ever do anything to repay your kindness, just say it. Peace & Love.
