  • Hello pen people!
    Ever wonder if the new design for the Platinum Carbon Desk pen is any good? I’ve got the old design AND the new one, and we are going to see what’s what!
    If you’re interested in the classic design, you are going to have to watch your local pen forums and auction sites, because that’s pretty much the only way to get your hands on one. If you want the new one, you can find it here:

    Shauna here! So glad you like the pen! I bought it from Japan as NOS. The new style definitely has a thicker line and I'm not a fan of that step! I hope you create many cool drawings with it in future!

    I understood that the old Platinum Carbon Desk Pen had a feed that was specially designed for the Platinum Carbon pigmented ink with teeny particles in it.

    • @stepheninks

      That’s interesting, because it does have, to my impression, a slightly better flow than the Preppy. Anyway, I’ve never had problems with Platinum Carbon ink clogging any of my pens.

    I feel the same, the new pen is too much like a Preppy to pay the extra cost.
    But I also have to say that I love the Lamy Joy, and it is a Safari with a longer "end" that make it balance very nicely.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  9 месяцев назад +1

      I never bought a Lamy Joy for a similar reason. Is it really that different from the Safari? I guess I would want to just choose one of the two.

    I was thinking of getting the desk pen and the meteor.. but if the meteor is a fancy preppy and the desk pen is a preppy then i wont need to get both

      Yeah it’s a shame that Platinum made the choice to discontinue such a beloved design in favor of (I’m guessing) saving some money on manufacturing. You can see the originals by 3rd party sellers on Amazon for about 75USD right now.
      But I concur, there isn’t any reason I can think of that you would need both. I love my preppy, and I don’t need another one either.

      Good to see another lefty in the wild. Actually fountain pens in general have really helped me avoid smudging. I think it’s the water-based ink. A nice absorbent paper like a hot press watercolor also helps!

  • @benchandler4298
    @benchandler4298 6 месяцев назад

    I have to say I'm glad you compared it to a Preppy, because this morning I was looking specifically for a paintbrush shaped fountain pen that was of equal quality to a Preppy, and this answered my question perfectly!

    • @benchandler4298
      @benchandler4298 5 месяцев назад

      @@stepheninks Yes, absolutely. I think I understand why Platinum keep the Preppy looking like a supermarket pen, with their Prefounte and Plaisir lines kind of serving as the next tiers, but solid colour Preppies would look fantastic.

    Your conclusion on the new one is correct ---- it's a Preppy mated with a brush pen body. The pocket clip makes it look ridiculous. I have two of the older desk pens. One is the traditional like you have with what is essentially an EF nib. Not being an artist I don't use it. The other one seems rather rare, and it was commonly sold by Goulet Pens perhaps five or so years ago. The nib is what Platinum probably calls a medium, and it performs like a Western fine. This is perfect for me. I've used it with carbon ink cartridges for years, and it has been flawless as a writer. Never dries out no matter how long it's unused, never a hard start, no nib creep. The cap is a black version of the white on yours, and it's simply a plastic tube. There is no insert of any kind or any mechanism to seal it. I have always believed that Platinum designed this nib and feed specifically for their carbon ink although I have no facts to back that up. They've done a real disservice by dumping the real carbon desk pen for a Preppy. By the way, your production values are awful; tighten it up.

      I’m not sure how to respond to this comment, because it’s really like two comments; one about the Platinum Carbon Desk Pen, and the other about my production values. I’ll just split my responses into two comments. Comment 1: it makes sense for Platinum as a company to just put out two versions of the same (or very similar) pen, even though a bunch of people are mad about it, the net gain for them is probably more than the small loss in profits they get for this dumb decision. It’s a shame too, because the original desk pen is an absolute gem, which felt like no one talked about it until it was gone. Maybe in a few years they will bring the old design back when they need some attention? I don’t know, it’s a shame anyway. I don’t see any reason to buy one of the new models.

    1. I have a Carbon Desk Pen from roughly 4(?) years ago, for around $14(?). It's fabulous. It looks a little different from your older pen, coming with a black version of that same cap, and "Carbon Ink Pen" written in gold around the barrel just below the cap. Still, very similar design if not identical. I remember that just shortly after I bought it, the design and name were changed (3+ years ago?). It sounds like it has undergone another change more recently? Your old and mine both have a narrower nib, your new is a Preppy nib.
    2. The Carbon Ink Pen is my favorite , due to the nib. And I do periodically make use of the long barrel. I've had results equal to or better than other EFs costing ten times as much, or more. I keep it permanently filled with Platinum Carbon Black cartridges. It is probably worth $75, but admittedly it's incredibly hard to pay that much for a cheapo pen, even with a fab nib.
    3. None of my 19 bottles of Noodler's ink came with a plastic insert à la the Platinum bottle, so maybe you are thinking of some other brand.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  9 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah, I think it was a pretty recent change. On Amazon, there are a few reviews where people wonder if it’s a knockoff. Not likely with it fitting the preppy cap so easily. Maybe I’m being too harsh, because a solid black preppy would be in my pen collection instantly.
      Maybe it’s not the official retailer, but in Amazon there are quite a few vendors that sell what they call “inkwells” with the inks. I have one. It’s very possible that it’s a 3rd party design.

    Thank you for this video!! I’m an old animator fell out of drawing while working in software, getting back to my sketchbooks now. I’ve been wanting a new cheap fountain pen for drawing/sketching for some time. A few hours of research led me to this pen, but this video was the first I came across highlighting the differences between the new/old models, and drawn examples too.
    I hopped right over to ebay and a few minutes later, think I scored a pretty amazing deal (3 pens for $45), quickest buy now decision I’ve made. I’ll try and post the link in a comment.
    Do you know if the nibs are interchangeable? Could I buy/fit one with a medium nib?

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  Месяц назад

      Glad I could help! I actually made this video because I couldn’t find the information for myself! As far as the nib, I don’t know if the old style has any way of removing the nib from the section. The new style, since it’s exactly the same nib and section of the Platinum Preppy, does have a nib that can be swapped. I’m not sure if there is even anywhere you can find the nib for the old style desk pen sold separately. The Preppy is also a very nice pen for its price, and it is available with a medium nib. Just FYI.

    I have the old version. For some reason mine started leaking. I wonder if there is a reason for that. Have you seen the Pilot version of the desk pen? Cheap as well. Just placed an order for two with different nib sizes.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  9 месяцев назад +1

      Do you mean the Pilot Ergonimic Girp? I think it’s also called the “Penmanship?” I did a video about that pen way back about 2 years ago. I like it, but it suffers from a bit of the same problem as the Desk pen redesign. It’s basically a long Pilot Kakuno. I love the Kakuno, but if I buy a new pen… I want it to be a NEW pen.

    I have one from about 10 years ago - it looks even older than your older pen there. Mine has a black cap, not clear and no gold circle on it. It was $7 on Amazon. I just bought the new one a week ago and my first thought was "this looks weird." It doesn't write as smooth out of the package as the old one did.

      My best guess would be to try auction/secondhand sites like ebay or pen tourism where people sell pens. Sometimes you can get a “grey market” pen from a place like Amazon (where a 3rd party from another country ships directly to you). I’ve had luck in those places when all else fails. When I was living abroad in South Korea, I used to have pens delivered to my parents house in the US, and then I would pick them up whenever I visited. Sometimes I would stockpile hard-to-find art supplies for up to a year before I could get over there!

      I carry mine all the time. I have been putting the new version in my pencil case lately to use up the ink inside, so I can get my expensive Platinum converter back into a pen I like more. It hasn’t ever leaked on me. If a pen leaks, it shouldn’t be bought, in my opinion. There are too many pens that work well out there for us to have to put up with shenanigans like that.
