Riding Cheddar Gorge | Motorcycle Training - IAM Rider Skills Day Thruxton

- Back in July 2017 (before Herman was obliterated by a SMIDSY in South East London) I did some motorcycle training in the form of an IAM Skills Day at Thruxton race circuit. The IAM Roadsmart Rider Skills Days are designed to offer you a practical safe learning environment in which to develop your motorcycle skills and learn new ones. Most of all, they are a LOT of fun.
Myself, Pete and Marcus decided we'd make a trip of it and ride down the day before, sampling some roads along the way to the beautiful Cheddar Gorge for a spot of luncheon. Fed and watered we had a play with the drone, before heading back to the hotel for a good nights kip before the next day's antics.
The IAM Skills Day is based upon the motorcycle bible, the police roadcraft theory, and takes the format of 6 x 20 minute theory inputs in a classroom, where the instructor details a point of learning such as: Vaninshing points, entry/apex/exit points, making safe progress, braking, gear selection, blipping the throttle and throttle sense/use.
After each classrooom session you then hit the track for close supervision under an instructor where you then put that theory into practice in small similarly paced groups.
Folks, it is a LOT of fun and well worth the money. I went expecting a fairly stuffy, slow paced jaunt around the circuit, but instead was faced with a Nurburgring instructor and a few new friends in our group who were what can only be described as 'RAPID'.
As the day progresses and your instructor is satisfied you're not dangerous, overtakes are allowed in places and the fun really begins.
I can't recommend these days enough folks, I'll be doing more next year for sure.

Love the gorge.....we have friends with a property just outside Cheddar we visit each summer....I have never actually ridden the gorge ! Need to remedy that soon....😊🥃🏴

Thruxtons a beauty isn't it. I've been lucky enough to race round it on a zxr400, fair to say its flat-out 90% of the time on one of them. Cracking video as usual!

Ah cheddar gorge! I was there this morning! I take a cheeky detour on my commute a couple of times a week, great fun first thing in the morning when no one else is on that bit of road :-)

+Norrie Masson I think they do 2 a year at each circuit - Thruxton and Croft. Dates aren’t released until early 2018 but they go VERY quick so get in early.
They used to have them here at Mallory Park but I'm sure all this year they've been at Thruxton. Great video mate. LYL

Any thoughts on the next bike? it would be cool to see you do a video with the tmf on choosing your next steed seeing you are both gs fans and have plenty of miles under the belt between you.
+Adam King I’d love to do a vid with TMF, in fact we’ve spoken about it on here before, but he’s really busy with his own content just now - he does this full time now whereas it’s just a hobby for me.
At the moment it’d have to be a new GS for me, but I’d like to try a few others just to make sure, so expect a fair few review vids once I’m able to ride again 👍
I’m hoping RichyVida, TMF and I can do something together for a wee series of vids in the New Year, that should be a great craic 😉

Bloody hell I did a track day there when I was 21 (long time ago) in a F3 car, mega fast track
Regards training other than the IAM the best I've done was with i2i Motorcycle Academy, it was a terrible day weatherwise (a bit like your last day of the UK trip) and I was doing machine control part 1. The rain was the best it could be though as they showed me how to brake properly and the rain emphasised how good your brakes are if used correctly. I was doing stoppies in torrential rain.

We went up to Cheddar Gorge years ago just after they surface dressed it. Couldn’t do more than 10mph and it was like riding sheet ice.

Awesome stuff, I've just posted a Cheddar Gorge video too. I didn't know you were allowed to use a drone there, would have loved to have gotten mine up in the air there! :-)
Tbh I was a bit naive when I first got it and flew it anywhere, but now I know otherwise. There were LOTS of warnings about flying there on my DJi remote, but it wasn’t a red zone were I was so I could just ignore the warnings and fly up to a set ceiling height.👍
Is it the Mavic Pro you have? They are proper handy little things, love mine, just wish I could use it more places. Yeah I think the green warnings are ok. I get annoyed when it alerts me after I've taken off, it is like, thanks mate, couldn't you have said before I flew it! :D

I think the regs around Drone flying in the UK are going to get way more stringent next year, I’m tempted to just do the commercial course now before they hike the prices up.

I want to do more track training primarily to improve my road riding not to become a track day rider. How does the IAM day and CSS compare? There are also other companies that offer training on track - Rapid, BSB school. Thanks very much!

Did you not rate the Metzelers? Are the road smarts better? Agree the GSA is unbelievable had mine a year 11,000 miles and wouldn't dream of stopping it
+Paul M The Metzelers has great wet grip, and initially the dry grip when pushed hard was stunning. But after about 3,000 Miles I really felt them ‘wander’ when accelerating hard out corners, or braking hard on approach to bends. They were down to the tyre core at 4,300 miles.
The Dunlop Roadsmart 3’s had the same sensational wet grip, but the dry grip was just superb. I had over 6,500 miles on them when I was taken out by the SMIDSY and they still had a lot of life in them.
When I get a new bike (GS) I’ll be putting Roadsmart 3’s straight on them for sure.

How do you secure your bikes overnight at a travel lodge?

+Matt Eyres I think it was about £135 or £150 maybe, so comparable with a track day at a big circuit really. The instructors you get are top notch too, our one is a Nurburgring instructor?!

Just curious, I understand Helga is around now and Herman is not but, what mode do you usually ride? Especially since you took the current bike to a shop to tune it up a wee bit? Cheers.
Hi Ole, I pretty much always ride in Dynamic Pro unless I’m going off-road or riding in icy/snowy conditions, then I put it in Enduro Pro.

Roadsmart 3’s I think - best tyres I’ve had on the GS for all round road-based riding, superb.
Picking up a new gs tomorrow think it’s coming on Bridgestone so might have to change them straight away. Keep up the good work on all the vids. Need a Uk meet up!
Aye defo, I did one way back I’m about April/May up at the Super Sausage but haven’t got around to doing the vid yet!
