    I sometimes still giggle about the fact that Russel.T.Davies wrote a whole episode just for David Tennant to say the line "Judoon platoon upon the moon" because Davies knew David would have a hard time saying the "-oon" without reverting back to his Scottish accent 😂 what a gem

    David Tennant is the greatest Hamlet of our time. The fact that he hasn't been given a role that could earn him an Oscar yet is a tragedy.

    • @yubantwo2086
      @yubantwo2086 11 месяцев назад +47

      His Richard II and Benedick are top knotch as well. Tennant has produced a plethora of Oscar worthy roles. But what makes him even more appealing is that he takes on roles he loves and wants to embody. Awards are not his focus. His reward, I've heard him oft remark is consistent employment. I just love that about him. In fact, he has never even won a BAFTA, the British Oscar. He will host the BAFTAs in two weeks, yet, and hold your hat, he has NEVER even been nominated for one.

      And Macbeth. DO NOT GET ME STARTED! That man does everything superbly - from the broadest comedy to the subtlest drama to heart-rending tragedy. He deserves ALL the awards.

    • @yubantwo2086
      @yubantwo2086 11 месяцев назад +34

      PS: What is even more praiseworthy is that Tennant turns down projects that interfere with his personal life. He prioritizes quality time with his children vs. taking roles that might bring more award visibility.

      @Sasha05 Agreed 💯 There are many more like DES (I learned that he had lived doors diwn from where those murders were committed at the time they were being committed), Bad Samaritan, 80 Days Around The World, The Russian Poisoned (Litchenko - spelling) Jessica Jones even, What We Did On Our Holiday. The fact that he prioritizes his family, and stands to his moral compass, such as declining an OBE offered to be conferred by the Royal Family add to his aura, allure but also to his humility and lack of even a BAFTA nomination. YET, next week he will host the BAFTA, which demonstrates his sense of humor and magnanimous nature.

      @@yubantwo2086 I agree totally on DT's prioritizing roles that raise questions about the human condition and his unwavering loyalty to family and his own sense of morality and just trying to be the best person he can, very rare these days. I did look up his awards on Wikipedia; Scottish BAFTA for Dr Who and The Escape Artist I think International Emmy for Des? didn't keep track, there were quite a few, but yes the Brit BAFTA not yet ... while there's worlds enough, and time ... great comments BTW.

    I was lucky enough to spot an advertisement for a Doctor Who event taking place in NYC a few years ago. It was David, Matt Smith and Alex Kingston discussing Doctor Who. We laughed for almost 3 hours listening to them tell stories about Doctor Who. David is very humble.
    It just so happened to be the weekend of New York Comic Con. As a result I was able to meet and get autographs with David, Matt and Alex. I got to chat with Alex for about 10 minutes. I also got to enjoy the Good Omens panels which were a lot of fun.
    Near the end of the weekend, I found out that the reason for event and the appearance of David, Matt and Alex at NYCC. That Sunday was the first episode of Jodi Whitaker as Doctor Who. They showed it on a screen in one of the largest theater venues they had available where I watched it with hundreds of other Doctor Who fans.
    It was one of the most enjoyable weekends I have ever had.

    It should also be pointed out that Crowley "doesn't love Queen songs" .. its just that any cassette tape left in a car for a long enough period of time .. will magically convert into a Queen album .. I imagine that Gaiman had issues with the footnotes .. which contain some of the funniest stuff

    • @EvelynBaron
      @EvelynBaron 11 месяцев назад +7

      While that is totally true of the book, it felt to me in the screen adaptation/series that Crowley's character as played masterfully by Tennant has become inextricably linked with Queen's music to the enhancement of both. Interestingly Brian May turned down Neil Gaiman's request to use their music for the radio play of GO, but changed his mind for the screen version. Since in the book Queen's music is portrayed as a comical nuisance, it also would have been churlish, to use one of David Tennant's oft used words, to not properly honour it on film. Totally agree re: footnotes.

      @krab1791 I didn't forget Good Omens. Crowley is one of my all time favorite roles of his (or anyone else's. I am absolutely obsessed with that character). Your favorite Alex Hardy, I love as I love his Peter Vincent, the Vicar in Inside Man (not the movie but DT's role as the Vicar) and many more portrayals. I was naming what are the best of the best roles as far as range and emotional depth go (not to forget Campbell Bain in 'Taking Over The Asylum' and Casanova. Oddly enough (& 'don't know what this means), but as much as I admire his Kilgrave, I didn't find the character scary. I think that has to do with the fact that Tennant always manages to find and portray the humanity and authentic motivations in all of the characters he takes on. Episode 9 of Jessica Jones is Tennant's favorite from the series I heard him say in an interview. It's pretty intense, but it's worth going back and viewing to the end.
      I know of no other actor alive or dead whose body of work encompasses the silly and suave, goofy and gorgeous villan and victor while effortlessly oozing sex appeal and empathy, to be found in one actor. That he's a humble family man void of airs with a great sense of humor expressing sincere interest in humanity, makes him all the more appealing and addictive.

I did discover it about the time the show was getting into some heavy syndication in the States. Because in the States there are times when November 23rd is on Thanksgiving, in our little Doctor Who club in Austin we'd have the party the weekend before, so those kids in the club who were in university wouldn't miss the party. He really is super nice and genuinely so with fans, as is Michael Sheen. Lots of cons seem to have such a fabulous atmosphere. There were one or two cringe worthy moments though in one con I watched on youtube where one person wanted a hug and a young woman wanted to run her fingers through his hair which he handled pleasantly but firmly. Stuff like that makes me so uneasy and sort of spoils it for people who truly respect his work and his privacy IMO. Just me -- there's one fan who keeps endlessly posting in such an obsessive and personally intrusive way, it feels a bit unhinged. Perhaps I'm just ancient and misreading simple enthusiasm but I remember the late Tom Petty of the Heartbreakers almost dying in his youth when someone pulled him down into the crowd, a nightmarish event that really haunted me. OK I knew through work and my sis in the music industry Tom Petty who was perilously near the stage early on and almost died. I wasn;t there but it was talked about for a long time and it haunted me. I have seen interactions where David Tennant is confronted by someone who goes too far and he gently but firmly cuts it off but my impression is that the world is a scarier place than he knows ... or possibly not. I didn't realize that like me he's been battling anxiety all his life so may be an oscar is in line. My comment came actually from a youtuber who compulsively posts about him under the guise of admiring his work, determined that he knows who she is ;because she is him and has 4000 followers. (This intrusiveness includes finding out the song playing when he married his wife. This is so not ok for anyone but especially far as I know a loving family man...) My skin crawls and she's launching something for the BAFTA awards let her keep to her channel and get help.

      I'm torn between DT's Hamlet and Kenneth Branagh's, not fair comparison tho, since Branaugh's was huge budget made for big screen. DT's was more intimate, less spectacle, so rate them both.😊😊

    Very well done. Just one area needing focus-the pronunciation of quite a few words. Perhaps the VO could run over the text with someone knowledgeable prior to recording. Otherwise, well organized and informative.

    I like David Tennant, he’s my second favorite Dr after Matt Smith (the all time best imho) but I like him quite a bit in some of his other roles, although it’s tough getting your brain to adjust that you aren’t watching the 10th Dr pretending to be a demon in Good Omens, hahaha. I mean, Dr Who is where most of us first met Tennant, so it always takes me 10-15 min for my brain not to think “oh hey, there’s the Doctor” in something that isn’t Dr Who.

    Very interesting and seems well researched, but the narrator needs to invest a bit of time into learning the proper pronounciation of names. Sorry to be such a stickler, but it's Davison, not Davidson, and it's certainly not PratchEtt, just as examples. Also, in the introduction there's a clear mix up of Hamlet and Romeo.

    I wish I could like Tennant's Doctor, but for some reason, I never have. To me, his fanboy-ism over the character has always shined through way too much in that role. But anyway, I love Tennant in other roles. He's a good actor, I just dislike this particular role of his. The fact that it is so popular actually baffled me for a long time - I just cannot see what they are seeing in the 10th Doctor. I like the written version of the 10th Doctor fine and some writers write him quite well, but Tennant? Nope, do not like his version. It's so weird, when I do like the actor, but really do not like his most popular role.
    By the way, completely love Broadchurch - also Olivia Coleman was also excellent in that series.
    Well made biography.

      Heh. Being an anxious person but yet being perceived as a confident one? I thought before that I'm pretty sure I would like him as a person if we ever met in real life, but this confirmed it. I am the same way - I must be great at bluffing considering how most people can't see how uncertain I am.

    Maybe it's just a bad case of heartburn from that Third Dagwood Sammich I ate today, but....
    Does anyone else see David Tennant, and think to themselves, "You know....He could be cast as a Younger Brother to Hugh Jackman's Character, in whatever movie you'd like.... and... everyone in the Industry would look at that, and the poor bastard would be typecast from that point forward as Wolverine's kid brother, Doctor Who!" Only problem is Daniel Radcliffe. Harry Potter Himself.
    Now.... if Hugh, David, and Radcliffe got into a flick together... Here's a thought: a 80's Newhart Sendup: Hugh, David, and Daniel Radcliffe walk into that Vermont B&B, and Hugh goes..... "Hi I'm Larry... this my brother Daryl... this is my other brother, Darrell.:

    I can honestly say that he is one actor that i genuinely like absolutely everything i have ever seen him in. I've read tons of Gaiman and I don't think there is anyone else on Earth who could have fit better than David in the role of Crowley in Good Omens. He is just so clever and funny and talented. A joy to watch.(And a pretty good dancer, i should know I've taught dance classes). If i ever get a dying wish, I'd like to have a dance with him.😏✨🩵✨

    😮 Chiswick is _not_ pronounced "Chiswick" .. it's 'Chis-ick' the 'w' is silent. (Just as the "w' is also silent in 'Southwark' in South London - is correctly pronounced 'Suth-ark') ...sigh!
