- Which actor playing Roger sings the middle part of "One Song Glory" the best? Adam Pascal originated the role of the brooding rock star and is the most favored. Do the other actors who succeeded him have what it takes to give justice to "Glory"? We'll find out.

Adam IS Roger as far as I'm concerned. He's the only one that doesn't try too hard; he doesn't act 'hardcore' or do certain hand motions or facial expressions, he just sings it from the heart. It's so natural and raw.
If I had to pick a next best it would be Cary.

I just wanted to say that while I understand what you mean about Adam being the most "natural," I don't think some of the other guys acting are necessarily OVERacting. Aaron Tveit maybe did make it a bit more theatrical, but that's just his style. Even tho it looks like the whole scene is the definitely scripted, some of the singers portray it as an emotional response to the moment and not just for the sake of making it look good
Adam is the original and very good. The part was written by Jonathan with Adam in mind but I think Will Chase is better

You need to distinguish between fact and your opinion. They are two different things. If you think Adam is better that's fine and I respect your opinion. The fact you say Will Chase is rubbish and finish your sentence with the word 'Fact' suggests you are both tone deaf and immature

yes the best part about Adam in this role is that he plays Roger as a sincere introvert. this is how most musicians actually are in real life
What’s really cool about Adam in comparison to the others is that Adam wasn’t an actor when he originated Roger. He was the lead singer of a rock band the had broken up. I think that’s why I believe he plays the part so genuinely in comparison to other actors.
Fun fact, they had to keep telling Adam to open his eyes when he sang. I love the thought of Jonathan being like, dude you’re awesome but I wrote this song called “your eyes.”
I've seen multiple Aaron Tveit comments, and I just want to put in my two cents. While Aaron Tveit is a great singer and absolutely precious, his voice is too "theatre" for the role of Roger.
I couldn't think of a clever channel name I agree! I think that Aaron would have played a much better Mark than he did Roger!
Sam I am But Aaron is also much more the "pretty boy front man" than he is Mark. That's not to say actors have to resemble their characters personally to be good, but I prefer Aaron as Roger.
Edit: that's also not to dispute with the original comment. I also think his voice is too "theatre"

In my opinion, Adam Pascal is untouchable! Will Chase is the only other "Roger" to do this song justice!
Adam is the obvious choice however I love the rocker edge that Will gives to "time dies" it's so emotional and touching also the gravel in his voice just makes his Roger even better! With that said all of these Rogers are incredible and they all have something to give to the character. ❤️

ADAM!!! But if I had to pick a second I think the only other good one (here) was Norbert Leo Butz. I also like Aaron Tveit, but really there is NO ONE better than Adam!

Jonathan Larson picked so well the role of Roger, he saw Roger in Adam, every single thing that needed Roger was in Adam and he still have that powerful and amazing voice
Definitely Adam Pascal. He was particularly amazing in the tour version, where he hits the high B. I thought the guy who closed on Broadway was also great.

I've seen Rent four times, and I LOVED Cary Shields! Powerful voice and great actor :) doesn't hurt he ain't bad to look at either.
But then-no one beats Adam. That man is one of a kind!

It is really hard for me to tell from these clips. I love how the song changes from being so tender to ramping up this point and going back to the tenderness. From all the videos I have watched, Adam Pascal is still my favorite. I love the tenderness in his voice for this song.
My favorite is definitely Will Chase, there is something about his voice and just the way he portrays the character that draws you in. I thought Cary Shields was great too. And of course Adam Pacal is freakin awesome!

Adam Pascal has the voice and the benefit of being original cast, but I'd have to say Will Chase might be my favorite Roger, he puts so much emotion and power into the role. The 2008 version filmed live on broadway he was amazing and you could feel the emotion in every song he sang. Adam has an amazing voice, but for every other aspect of the role(acting, being the character, emotion, etc.) i probably would have to go with Will Chase

I do like Adam's version as well, and being the original def has some perks, but I'm with you on Will Chase, particularly that 2008 filmed Broadway performance.

Although all of the actors did a great job, no one can measure to Adam. Especially on this song in this role. Just hearing the note at 7:15 is enough to justify my point. However, I really liked Cary Shields's last performance in this video, and Norbert Leo Butz. I also like the way Aaron Tveit performs it (yes I know he isn't here) but he doesn't have the same rocker edge in his voice that the rest of these guys do.
Cary Shields! Anyone trying to go against Cary Shields is like trying to bring a knife to a gun fight. It just isn't fair.
This was cool.... but definitely Adam. Those who have loved RENT from the beginning know that he IS Roger. Theres no comparison. I've seen the show over 50 times... many different casts. No one compares to Adam Pascal. Every emotion is portrayed PERFECTLY.
Cary is second. ;)

Of course, I love Adam and Will, but they're all great. However, I will say that I don't think Norbert Leo Butz gets enough credit! I didn't even know he ever played Roger, and his clip was probably the best executed of all of them. Definitely an unexpected but incredible pairing of actor/role.
Damn, they're all good, I'm sure, that's why they were all on Broadway or touring. But the song seems made for the raw quality of Adam's voice and his tough, strong masculinity when performing.
I think, acting wise, Will Chase is the best. Maybe there are better singers but he's the only one I've seen who really sells what he is singing, at least on my opinion.
I will admit all these actors have really good voices, but some just don't fit the role of Roger or it just sounds forced. Adam Pascal will probably always be my favorite version of Roger, manily because he was the origin of the role and he just nails it so well. I also like Cary Shields, Will Chase and even though he wasn't in this, Aaron Tveit. But Adam will always be Roger in my heart.

Pascal 1st, Will Chase close second. Seen them both live too, and they're both incredible to watch/hear.
Something about Adam in the OBC of 1996 really gets me - the desperation, grit, anger, sadness and more hard rock sound was perfect for the show and I thought the best interpretation even till today. He’s improved by leaps and bounds but I think his voice these days sounds more theatrical than rock, which I still love, but the way he embodied Roger with the original voice style will always be my favourite

Adam Pascal's voice is so uniquely suited to this role, plus his acting choices are measured which I like. No need to run around in this moment of self-reflection. Will chase also nails that apsect. There is desperation to break the mould of life but no need for aggression.
I have to say that all of the actors chosen to play Roger were impressive in their own way. They ALL have strong voices and can clearly hold a tune. What it ultimately comes down to however is preference.
Adam Pascal IMHO was the first and still is the best Roger. He can hit the notes, feel the passion of the lyrics and retain a rocker element to "One Song Glory".
That being said, I did enjoy the other actors interpretation of this song and was impressed with their respective renditions....
They are all good... but Ian Ward in 2023 at OSF, Ashland, Oregon performs it with the most passion and believable angst, channeling the lyrics into a heartfelt emotional ending!

They're all great! Adam Pascal delivers the most unique performance, Will delivers the most moving performance and Norbert Leo Butz just always gives a good show. Cary Shields and the rest all come a close second, however. None were weak by any means. Bravo to all of them!

For me it is a tie for first place between Adam and Will Chase. I love them both. Adam IS Roger and I love his voice. Renee Elise Goldsberry and Will Chase are very good as Roger and Mimi together and I also love Will Chase's voice.
Adam Pascal. There's a rawness to his voice and a desperation in his style and delivery that embodies everything about this song.

Well of course Adam is awesome......I also saw Manley Pope two years in a row and he was fantastic...I don't think this clip showed his true talent at all.

@Emma Aaron Tveit didn't play Roger until 2010; he only understudied the role before then. This video was uploaded in 2009.

I cast my lot in with Will Chase. He and Pascal are on the same level, but I prefer Chase. Kudos to Pascal for that high Bb, though. Always thought that run should be replaced by or at least include that note.
Chase. He gives it a Real rock feel. Pascal kid got the sound in the 2007. But I still go for Luke Evans lol

Cary was my favourite Roger back in the day, but I never got to see Will Chase - and having now watched the 2008 proshot I think he might be the best actor of the bunch - watching him in Another Day in particular, there’s so much specificity there. Disagree with those who said he doesn’t have a “rock” voice - it’s not the gravel of Adam but at times gives off a Billie Joe Armstrong vibe, so maybe more of a pop-punk?
Adam and Cary specifically for OSG I think, though.

IMO - no one stands near Adam, but I think Cary Shields and Bryce Ryness would be my two alternate choices to see live. Luckily, the two times I saw it on Broadway, it was Adam. :)

I never saw Adam Pascal in his prime, so couldn't really say, but was both unimpressed by him in the movie and this latest tour. Will Chase blew me away when I saw him on Broadway, everything Roger should be. And I did see Cary Shields and enjoyed him immensely, but Will Chase, easily
Pity that I don't still have the audio of Caplan doing Roger. It's both magical and mind boggling.
That video is not great of him, but Kush is definitely the best, from start to finish. Then Shields. Then Howar. Particularly the night of Matt's last, that was unbelievable.

Mine is Adam at heart...but I do have another favorite and it's DECLAN BENNETT....and he wasn't even apart of this list!!!! He is absolutely amazing as Roger. I also love Will Chase, I htink he portrayed that grit that Roger is suppose to have wonderfully, plus he's an incredible singer. I love Jeremy Kushnier, but not as Roger. I saw him in Footloose and LOVED him...
