All I want to be able to do is stop the individual short of taking his life. This gives me the opportunity to leave my home safely. But, if I had no other choice, it then comes down to my life or his. The choice is obvious. Yes, I will have to appear in court, but my case will be selfie defense. This is one HUGE reason I like living in the US. You can’t put a price on freedom. Great video.

But, as you point out, using a firearm can be fatal. And, ..... bullets can travel through the room and even through walls, even after hitting an attacker. Every situation is unique. In a panic, people quickly shoot at the upper body. Most likely you will take out the attacker. But then you also have the greatest risk that it ends up deadly. With all it‘s consequences. When confronted with a nighttime robbery/home invading and an obvious personal threat in my home, I have a heavy-caliber handgun at my disposal. However, I am responsible for its possession and use. First of all, fleeing to a safer place is the best and safest option. Anyway, these are and remain difficult situations and choices, which you can never estimate in advance. Do NOT use weapons that are not actually real firearms! Using a Soft Air pistol is definitely NOT a good choice. Shooting out an attacker's eye is also nonsense. Even if you manage to do that, the attacker's adrenaline may rise to the point where you're probably lost.

You said your gun was 5 joule but does it just depend on what ammo you use. Energy is E=1/2mv^2. Speed seems to be 130ms. So with 0,53g: 4,5 joules and 0,35g about 3 joules. Is this right? Can you measure the velocity eith your gun?
in short, no it is not deadly, and no you dont need 100J to crack skull with small pointed/roundnose pellet, .25 ACP fired from pocket pistol is around 75J and it will crack skull up to around plus 40meters.
