Where did you get a vivarium from for the hedgehog? Considering getting a reptile vivarium but not so sure how well it would do with heat distribution it I went the minimum of 3 by 2 feet or upped to 4 by 2 feet. I’m not sure if I should be looking for an 18” or 12” height as I need to make sure the wheel will properly fits and on its lowest setting, 12” is a really tight squeeze as far as heights go. I have lots of accessories and I want the cage to look beautiful while allowing a ton of room for various form of enrichments. I’m currently in the process of working on wooden hutches which have been painted and sealed in water based polyurethane to give it a wipeable property to keep it clean as I’m not planning on going bioactive. The main concerns I’ve read about vivariums for hedgehogs are essentially not enough ventilation and thus the entire thing turns into a sauna. However I do like the look of the sliding glass or acrylic door panels with all black inner and outer probably PVC material. I had originally thought of placing them side by side on a stand. Then I thought about constructing a rack to be able to stack them that way air is able to flow through in between both stacked vivariums. Any thoughts on using a reptile vivarium as a hedgehog vivarium? Thanks!!
With the dried leaves, are these simply from the garden or did you purchase them? I'm a little worried about parasites if I was to collect them myself 🤔 or did you treat them some how? Just putting together my hog's new naturalistic house 😀
What lighting did you use for the plants? I don't want my hedgehog being harmed or the plants dying. What lighting did you use? Thank you!!!!! Also may you leave a link of where you got the dead hay/grass from? Thank you again!
Do you have any problems with mold growing in or outside the cage? The soil has to retain some moisture or else the clean up crew wouldn't thrive right? Wouldn't this eventually lead to mold growth? Thanks
I am thinking of getting a hedgehog and would LOVE to do it this way, I have bio-active planted gecko tanks. But I am so skeptical. Can this really handle the waste and urine volume of a mammal??? can hedgehogs get fleas? I just think if something went wrong it would be a real shame to have to take apart the whole thing.
Yes hedgehogs can get mites just like reptiles can (they can also get fleas). But something would need to give them mites/fleas, I personally have never had any issues and I made these enclosures 2,5 years ago.
@@grass_snake80 I do not use a drainage layer as it isn't needed for an arid enclosure. I only use drainage layers in more tropical tanks with high humidity and more moisture.
would you ever consider housing a hedgie and a tenrec together? I have a fairly large Bio-active enclosure for my Hedgie and I have been trying to find anyone who houses there HH with other (non CUC) animals. I see them often get along with cats and dogs, so why not other animals (desert pet species like maybe a tortoise, iguana, chameleon, bearded dragon or a desert toad? Do you have any thoughts on this? Thank you in advance!
I only need to spot clean, not fully clean it because it is bioactive. You can read more about it on my blog here: hedgehogsofasgard.com/post/159081372716/how-to-set-up-a-bioactive-or-naturalistic
I recommend at least 10 cm (4 inch) but if you can get a deeper layer, I would. The deeper the better! It's easier to keep lower layers from drying out too much when the substrate is a bit deeper.
@@RedAeron most vivs don't have a layer that deep I think, with the sliding doors. Do you recommend I modify the bottom or buy an aquarium style enclosure? Thanks for your reply BTW!
@@Jade-xz3ni it depends on the viv some are a bit deeper. I've seen people add plexiglass to the front so they can add more substrate, maybe that's an easy and cheap option?
I love this cage setup,my 2 hedgehog girls would love this setup too😊❤️

YEY! Bioactive buddies - thank you for being my inspiration :)
ChaiHedgehog thank you - your enclosure looks wonderful too!
it would be very cool if the aviary was 2 times larger, to have a lot of space to explore everything 😍😍😍❤🦔
You inspired me to make a bioactive enclosure for my lesser tenrec!
Great setup! What’s the waste like? Does it still smell/do you still need to spot clean?
What plants did you use in this enclosure? Is Aloe Vera, Elephant feed or Snake Plants safe?
Is the blog post still available? When i clicked on the link it says whatever yoy are looking for is not at this address.
awesome enclosure

Hi, I use a daylight bulb for the lighting. The hay is just timothy hay from a local pet store.

Hi Alex, no I have never had any mould issues.
Okay good to know. Thanks for the reply.
@@dirtb0ycod you're welcome! I mainly use inverts for arid setups so I don't need to keep my soil that moist.
Fantastic! I love it!

Hello! Wondering where you got the little trunk hideout from?
It's cork bark which is commonly sold in pet/reptile shops, at expos or online.
Do you need to clean up often?
No I take out the poop/pee corner once every three months or so.

Absolutely not, I don't even let my hedgehogs and tenrecs interact with each other. That likely wouldn't go very well.
What is a African pygmy hedgehog
A species of hedgehog
Where did you get your vivarium from?
My vivs are custom made by a company in my country!
What is the substrate you are using?
A mix of eco potting soil, cocopeat and sand :) + leaf litter
How does it smell
Like earth :)
Still keeping them this way?
Grey Ecologyst yes I do!
Yes I am, been doing for 2 years now. Very happy with it & so are my animals!
How do you clean it?:-p
It is bioactive so doesn't need much cleaning other than the occasional spot clean.
