Well, because of my grandma I basically grew up with them as she was an honorary worker at a hedgehog resque center, even though she was retired. they are really cute but it is really sad in which state they are sometimes and the human is the reason (lawnmowers etc.). they had a 15-20 year lifespan and now have one from 5-6 years. but i've seen chonkers that almost were 1 kg i believe. I loved seeing them. But I've also seen a lot of things with them. They sometimes are heavily wounded, even missing an eye or ear and surviving. some were infected and some were very thin, which is why the center was active during the autumn and winter. I've also once called my grandma to school because there was a hedgehog swarmed by wasps and flies. It was alive when suddenly it was bleeding from the nose in the car. Instead of going home we went to the doctor and it was euthanized as it was too late. How I hope that it was not suffering for long. It was pretty small and I hope that it at least had a painless death. It is amazing how long it has been. Sadly my grandmother died of natural cause 5-6 years ago. I do not wish to be pitied or anything, just wanted to share something on what seems to be an appropiate video. If you found a weak one or wish to help one in need (like in winter and they didn't eat enough to fatten up), then there is a couple things you can actually do at home, at least if it is not severe (like an infection). of course giving it to people that specialize in that kind of care, then do it, but if is a bit famished (?) or needs a little food, then you can do this (but be careful, this is only meant if it is taken in temporary): Disclaimer: this is from what I remember, may not be accurate or even be bad for them. searching the internet probably is better. - get something to remove ticks and fleas, you may want to get them off if you want to keep it in the house (temporary! it is not a pet). you can also do it if they are outside - If it stays outside, then get some kind of shelter to protect it from predators. if it is inside, get a large box (plastic or cardboard, something that can withstand fluids and no holes which they can entagle in). - get some old newspaper or anything and put it on the bottom of the box as ground. this will make cleanup easy (for poop and urin). maybe do multiple layers. - get a shoebox and cut a half circle (more of half an oval) and leave the cardboard on and bend it away (down or to the side). put flat side to the ground. keep the lid on (the lid should be the top side for easy access) so it stays as a box with only the entrance as opening(i will explain later). get a towel and put it on the ground of the box and get newspaper (newspaper is softer and not as sharp as paper) and cut it to 1cm wide strips (like in a shredder). put those in there, that will be the shelfter of it (if you keep it inside) so it stays warm and has a place to flee to (it should be dark in the box at least). if you keep it outside just put in the newspaper strips in the wooden box (i.e. if you bought one for your garden). You could probably use hay if you wish to buy some or get some grass or leaves, at least something to insulate. - for food and water get something like petri dishes or like very low plates, the ledge should be low so the hedgehog does not have to climb much to access it. something as big as 12cm diameter should be enough. you can get water from the tap and for food, choose cat food. if it is canned wet food, then just put it on (warning: they stink a lot from eating wet canned cat food). If you have pellets, then put them in water so they soften up. fruit pieces and vegetables can work as well (like apples and lettuce. i believe they liked banana a lot). please do not use rotten stuff. In terms of what will make them the fattest the fastest will be the wet canned cat food. - if you keep it inside, then put it in the living room or a room, where it will not annoy you at night. - Put a blanket or something else on the large box (for the night) and put in breathing holes so that your pets do not get funny ideas. you can probably staple the blanket to the large box or clamp it on there so it stays on. Just make it so that you can easily access anything on the inside and take a look inside. - weigh them on like something you would use to weigh flour for recipes (i think it was called scale, I am not a native speaker). grab a towel and put it on there. if you have an O ring or anything, put it under the towel. you can put the hedgehog on its back so it rolls up into a ball and then put it in the O ring (or on the scale). You may find good numbers in the internet if you search the age and size but maybe you can see from pictures what you are roughly looking for when it comes to how fat they should be in/for the winter. - if something bad happens (like bleeding), then take it to the vet. you remember the shoebox with the cardboard piece you bent away? you can use that as a door to close the box and now drive to the vet carefully. - it also is basically enough if you happen to spot is as they are shy. just getting some small bowls or plates and putting food on them will be enough for them to eat. put it in a spot that the hedgehog will reach and where other animals won't just joink it away. This is just some stuff you can do for wild hedgehogs if you wish to do so. Again, it has been some time and my grandma died half a decade ago so it may not be correct anymore as i will not remember it perfectly (I'm human after all) it is a happy memory that will hopefully live on with me for as long as I live as it were very happy times. rest in peace grandma, I miss you....

the spikes can cause allergic reactions in some people. they don't have smell but they're not clean. you have to wash their feet when they tread on their poop on their wheel (and wash their wheel everyday). they are also not rodents.
This is one of the worst hedgie information videos I have ever seen, too much even to list. If interested in a hedgie, be sure to research on many web sites to verify or correct information presented here. One excellent source with many care videos is Critter Connection. Another is Hedgehog Central.
This video was cute but...Hedgehogs don't stink?? I mean maybe their natural scent is nice but they are hella messy and dirty as pets. Be prepared for your room to smell like poop because they get COVERED in it!! I recommend a small air purifier for your comfort lol.
Well, as a natural instinct hedgies like to chew their poops and rub it on their back in a mixture of saliva and fecal matter as a means of making themselves smell and taste bad to predators. but also they just don't care if they get messy. No wonder hog is in their name, they seem to not minding rolling around in dirt!
I would like to apologize to Petopedia for the rudeness of my comment below. I do have serious concerns about the information presented, but should not have stated it in such a rude manner.
@@twisted4u I agree. If they want to make a video that is presented as educational and factual they shouldn't state a bunch of nonsense. People like this are the reason so many animals end up ' rehomed' or euthanized
I overheard my parents discussing on whether or not they should let me get a smaller pet, just to keep me company, specifically a hedgehog(Probably because I love Sonic The Hedgehog and I tend to share really cute videos of hedgehogs that get recommended to me to the group chat), so I’ve started watching videos just to be pre prepared for the discussion when they will inevitably ask me about getting a pet hedgehog.
Sounds like an exciting conversation ahead! 🦔 Brush up on hedgehog care tips from Petopedia, so you're ready to convince them with hedgehog charm. Best of luck! 🐾

@@petopedia_ Hey, so I’m deciding not to get a hedgie because I want a cuddly pet. I’ll try convincing my parents to get me a hamster or Guinea pig instead even though I have 2 cats. A friend of mine had a hamster and 2 dogs so I’ll ask her. Thanks
As we're not acknowledged about your dog temperament, we're not sure about how your doggo will react towards the l'll hedgehog. So, it's better to keep them separate!
Video was very informative. Thank you! I would love to get one but I plan on getting another dog as well. I wouldn’t want it to affect the hedges natural routine or have it be uncomfortable. Maybe one day I’ll get one, but only when I can be sure I can give it everything it needs
Thank you! Still definitely not getting one any time soon but love it😅dumb question: if the hedgehogs are siblings and never separated(gotten together), will they still fight? If not, does gender play a role in "characteristics"? Like male cats are known to be more aggressive than female cats
This video is in direct contradiction with another video I just watched because apparently they are actually incredibly messy. They will pee and poop on themselves.
They are very messy, and if you aren't keeping up with the maintenance it's GG. Also they are very stinky, and people have allergic reactions to them. I feel like this video was made up 😆
@@petopedia_ It's not an opinion. I turned this video off 2 minutes in because of the contradictory statements and robotic way the message is delivered. Hedgehogs can be messy and stinky if the maintenance isn't kept up on.
I will say the comparison to snakes is poor. Hedgehogs who eat daily and poop unpeakable amounts require unfathomably more maintenance than snakes do who typically poop and eat weekly
That's actually not true that they are hypoallergenic. Hedgie hives are VERY common for new Hedgehog owners until they get used to the bacteria that get trapped on the quills.
What would you do if you were a hedgehog for one day? If I was a hedgehog for a day, I would collect rings and find jewels so I could go Super Saiyan and beat up an evil scientist, all while running fast as hell. 🦔
I have five rescue hedgehog babies. It has been determined that they would have been foraging and still having mums milk. Mum was squished..not by me! I'm finding this very daunting. The budget and the space is the problem. I am to keep them through winter before letting go..so 3 months 🤦♀️ I want them to be healthy and happy of course but I'm feeling wayy out of my depth listening to this 😢
This video is wrong on so many levels.. I've had multiple hedgehogs for many years, They're noisy all night, they're very smelly AND not allergy friendly.. i don't know what the lady is talking about, but there's fur all over the belly and paws of the hedgehog. I had to get rid of mine because of allergies to fur
2:05 They can't clean themselves, so you have to do it for them. Only when they are clean and nothing crawls on them are they truly calm and develop intelligence.
Say no to a hedgehog. I've had several .....key word HAD. They can be stinky. They run on a wheel ALL NIGHT while they pee and poop non stop. Washing the wheel is gross. Usually everyday unless you enjoy the smell. And if they run around your house they do their business wherever......SURPRISE! Mine were bad about biting. Their teeth clamp down hard. Mine were never "loving" or affectionate. Once the novelty wore off, they became a real pain to maintain in more ways than one.
Y’all this channel is bs. All their replies are auto generated and copy pasted. And half of these facts aren’t even true. 1. They absolutely can stink 2. You can ABSOLUTELY be super super allergic to them, I mean possibly deadly; A lot of hedgie owners recommend interacting with a hedgehog before getting one to check for allergies. 3. In this video they say hedgehogs are quiet… but then also contradict themselves by saying they will keep you up at night bc they’re nocturnal and make noise…. Make it make sense. 4. Hedge hogs are ABSOLUTELY not low maintenance pets???? Idk why they would even say that. They are so much hard work. Much harder work than other small pets; even more difficult than rabbits (which are not low maintenance AT ALL) 🤨🤨🤨 5. ALSO; hedgehogs aren’t always lovey dovey. A lot of them won’t like human contact. Some are assholes and will hate being handled. If one wants to be alone their entire life, you have to be prepared to still take responsibility for them. Of course it depends on the hedgie
Yeah it was funny they talked about being allergic to fur then showing the fur on a hedgehog. Showing clearly they do not just have spines. They also say they do not get sick then say they do get sick and need a special vet. And quiet and also loud, haha. i have wild ones coming in my house and they even make noise during the day when they sleep and when they are inclined to entertain themselves they buldoze behind things and will climb boxes. They like exploring and they do not actually mind eachother or my cats, the other day one of my cats had to hiss to keep one away from the box he was in and the hedgehog tried twice.
Hedgehogs are quiet and loud? They are shown in the video with other hedgehogs and even a dog but also don’t get along with other pets? They are nocturnal but also literally shown in awake in the daytime through most of the video? They are very clean but also super messy? Low maintenance but could need expensive specialized vet care? They will love to jump on you but also don’t like humans? How many times can you contradict yourself in one video? I appreciate the video but it just doesn’t make a lot of sense.
hi! I have some questions here 1 how often do I have to take my hedgehog to the vet? 2 is it normal if my hedgehog isn’t using its wheel very much? 3 how bad does it hurt if it bites 4 can I train my hedgehog to stay awake during the day and sleep during the nigh? 5 (last one) what are the best ways to bond with it? ONLY HEDGEHOG OWNERS ANSWER PLS
Thanks for your query! Please watch our video on Hedgehog Care Guide: ruclips.net/video/2eP47edbttg/видео.html Hope you will find all your expected answers! Stay tuned for more!
I know you said only hedgehog owners answer but I have wanted one a handful of times so I’ve done a fair share of research (Maybe more than a fair share-more like an ungodly amount lol) Anyways, 1. From my research, every 6 months and when something seems off. Better safe than sorry especially since hedgehogs are great at hiding their problems. Fyi they do need an exotic vet and if something serious is wrong with them it could cost a big buck! ($500-$1,000!) 2. No! Something could be wrong with them or they are overweight. Hedgehogs typically run 9-12 miles per night so if they aren’t running on their wheel I’d get that checked out asap! 3. Depends on your pain tolerance. It won’t feel nice of course but you won’t be in excruciating pain either 4. You can but it’s not advised! They are nocturnal by nature. You can wake them up during the day but they will tend to be a bit grumpy if you do! 5. You can put a sock, t-shirt, or honestly any piece of clothing you have worn and out it in the cage so they can get used to your smell (Don’t wash it prior). They might poop on it so if you don’t like the thought wear an old shirt or clothing item for some time, one that you’ll never wear again, and put it in there. You will also want to spend 15-30 minutes with them when they are awake (Usually early morning or evening, unless you stay up late then any time at night) Remember to do lots of research before getting one so that your spiky friend can have proper care! And if you can, don’t shop but adopt! (Don’t go to like Petco or something but adopt from a shelter or breeder)
@@petopedia_ It was a veterinarian that told me my sister's Guinea pigs were not rodents. That was a long time ago. Perhaps they have been reclassified since.

the spikes can cause allergic reactions in some people. they don't have smell but they're not clean. you have to wash their feet when they tread on their poop on their wheel (and wash their wheel everyday). they are also not rodents.
This is one of the worst hedgie information videos I have ever seen, too much even to list. If interested in a hedgie, be sure to research on many web sites to verify or correct information presented here. One excellent source with many care videos is Critter Connection. Another is Hedgehog Central.
Thank You for sharing you thoughts! It will help us to improve.
2 reasons why not to get hedgehogs. They don't want you to get them. They don't like being prisoners for human entertainment.
@@twisted4ucorrect, and one more point, they are really too stupid to be a pet. they are as low intelligence as an insect
How do you deal with zoonotic diseases
We recommend you to concern with a professional vet to deal with this!
Hedgehogs aren’t actually rodents. They have teeth designed to eat some meat!
Why ELSE do you think Sonic likes chili dogs?
@@KellyLaurich I know that. But Sonic isn't your TYPICAL hedgehog. He is from Mobius.
I'm not sure if a hedgehog would be scared of my cockatiel
This video was cute but...Hedgehogs don't stink?? I mean maybe their natural scent is nice but they are hella messy and dirty as pets. Be prepared for your room to smell like poop because they get COVERED in it!! I recommend a small air purifier for your comfort lol.
thank you !! glad you liked it!! Hope you will like the other videos. Stay Tuned.
@@beetlesalt6759 woah, I didn't know this! I haven't seen my hedgie do this but now I'll keep an eye out.
I just got one and he is already very messy lol

I would like to apologize to Petopedia for the rudeness of my comment below. I do have serious concerns about the information presented, but should not have stated it in such a rude manner.
The truth isn't rude. Facts are facts, people don't like facts.

I have a question tho. My mom is allergic to hair and feathers, would she be allergic to hedgehogs too? I mean you said no but they have hair right?
Their spikes are not the hair! So, we think your mom will be okay!
Thanks so much. I might get one in a few months ^^

Thanks
Can you feed them cat food?
It's better not to give them cat food. Still, you can give it a try.
What if I have dogs, but I never allow them in my room, I would keep the hedgehog in the room, would that be ok or no?
As we're not acknowledged about your dog temperament, we're not sure about how your doggo will react towards the l'll hedgehog. So, it's better to keep them separate!
Video was very informative. Thank you! I would love to get one but I plan on getting another dog as well. I wouldn’t want it to affect the hedges natural routine or have it be uncomfortable. Maybe one day I’ll get one, but only when I can be sure I can give it everything it needs
Thank you for watching. Good luck for your next pet parenting!
Pro: just a silly little guy
But they're super cute and adorable.
Thank you! Still definitely not getting one any time soon but love it😅dumb question: if the hedgehogs are siblings and never separated(gotten together), will they still fight? If not, does gender play a role in "characteristics"? Like male cats are known to be more aggressive than female cats
Ha ha! There's no doubt that you're humorous!
this channel is terrible lol
That’s not an answer. Thanks AI
@@jeffarnold3229 lol ikr😅🤷♀️
This video is in direct contradiction with another video I just watched because apparently they are actually incredibly messy. They will pee and poop on themselves.
Thanks for sharing your valuable opinion with us. Stay connected for more.
@@ForestOfEmeralds was definitely hard to watch, the voice is forced along with lots of incorrect and contradicting facts.
the only common thing for all types of hedgehogs is: thet are absolutely stupid
I will say the comparison to snakes is poor. Hedgehogs who eat daily and poop unpeakable amounts require unfathomably more maintenance than snakes do who typically poop and eat weekly
Thanks for sharing your opinion. But there're so many who prefer hedgehog than snakes to keep as pet!
Here because im a fan of Sonic and I want one

lol here cause they are cute and good pets I want one too
5:50 nah thats a pro for me im a night owl too
That's actually not true that they are hypoallergenic. Hedgie hives are VERY common for new Hedgehog owners until they get used to the bacteria that get trapped on the quills.
Thanks for your insight.
They also have a tendency to steal rare jewelry and destroy electronics ive been told
What would you do if you were a hedgehog for one day? If I was a hedgehog for a day, I would collect rings and find jewels so I could go Super Saiyan and beat up an evil scientist, all while running fast as hell. 🦔
I’m getting a hedgehog in a month I can’t wait
I have five rescue hedgehog babies. It has been determined that they would have been foraging and still having mums milk. Mum was squished..not by me! I'm finding this very daunting. it's not my experience, hedgehogs are fearful animals by nature and keeping them as pets tends to exacerbate their dislike of humans@@petopedia_
This video is wrong on so many levels.. I've had multiple hedgehogs for many years,
They're noisy all night, they're very smelly AND not allergy friendly.. i don't know what the lady is talking about, but there's fur all over the belly and paws of the hedgehog. I had to get rid of mine because of allergies to fur

@@kat35lulu88 dang, this may have just steered me away from getting one lol
@@ErlingEra They are a lot of trouble. So are Guinea pigs. I speak from experience.
Yeah I definitely noticed that their facts were off and very questionable at times. Poor research, maybe English isn’t their first language.
They like exploring and they do not actually mind eachother or my cats, the other day one of my cats had to hiss to keep one away from the box he was in and the hedgehog tried twice.
i suggest a low maintenance way to keep a hedgehog: put it into a big water tank, it can swim, exercise, keep quiet and poop inside
Thanks for pointing it out!

I have been wanting to get a pet hedgehog for a really long time, but unfortunately, I live in California.
so i’m assuming i can’t have dogs and a hedgehog-?
No no, not like that! You can have one considering these facts first!
@@petopedia_ oh okay, thank you!
hi! I have some questions here
1 how often do I have to take my hedgehog to the vet?
2 is it normal if my hedgehog isn’t using its wheel very much?
3 how bad does it hurt if it bites
4 can I train my hedgehog to stay awake during the day and sleep during the nigh?
5 (last one) what are the best ways to bond with it?
ONLY HEDGEHOG OWNERS ANSWER PLS

Hope you will find all your expected answers! Stay tuned for more!
I know you said only hedgehog owners answer but I have wanted one a handful of times so I’ve done a fair share of research (Maybe more than a fair share-more like an ungodly amount lol) Anyways,
1. From my research, every 6 months and when something seems off. Better safe than sorry especially since hedgehogs are great at hiding their problems.
Fyi they do need an exotic vet and if something serious is wrong with them it could cost a big buck! ($500-$1,000!)
2. No! Something could be wrong with them or they are overweight. Hedgehogs typically run 9-12 miles per night so if they aren’t running on their wheel I’d get that checked out asap!
3. Depends on your pain tolerance. It won’t feel nice of course but you won’t be in excruciating pain either
You will also want to spend 15-30 minutes with them when they are awake (Usually early morning or evening, unless you stay up late then any time at night)
Remember to do lots of research before getting one so that your spiky friend can have proper care! And if you can, don’t shop but adopt! (Don’t go to like Petco or something but adopt from a shelter or breeder)
@@citric_raccoon Thank you! My little hedgey is running more on her wheel now and is doing better than ever! Thank you for telling me
