I don’t think I’d enjoy doing this on this Penn but once you’ve set the nail spring on a Mitchell 488 all other bail springs seem easier. Another reel that is a challene is tho Zebco Cardinal reel. It has a bail spring on each side of the rotor for the bail and two more springs inside the rotor operating the bail lock. It took me a while to figure the easy way to set those springs. This was an outstanding video for your library. You proved again what a great teacher you are!-- Chris

hehehe, no kidding. The Mitchell-Garcia bailsprings on the 300 family (I had 300,302 and 308) as my first spinning reels. The first time I tried to service my original 300 I sorta had my hat handed to me by that dang spring. It ended up bending the top cool beyond reason. Spent a week getting it back in shape then a weekend trying to get it back in place. and yup with the not quite right top cool. Funny thing was it fished fine for over a 25yrs.

@@rkw221 if you magnify the spring on a 300 about four times you’d have the difficulty of a 488 spring. It literally takes two people to do it. I’ve learned how to do it now but it is never easy,

Thanks Chris - Springs are the bane of all of us! I don't normally use springs and enjoy in the same sentence - Dennis

Experience is a great teacher! These are not easy projects to start with. Particularly the 308 - Thanks for the note - Dennis

Definitely a practice makes perfect kind of repair. This was an interesting repair. I don't own one of this group of Spinfishers so this was new to me. Thanks Dennis!

I have had some practice here. It is one of the reasons I get these as reel in the bag projects! Dennis

You always tell folks to use fishing reel grease and you are absolutely right. I serviced an ABU 6600 full of dried white lithium grease. That stuff was really hard to remove.

Yeah - but it is easy to spray on!!!!!!!!!! Best wishes Ward - Dennis

Bought the reel with a decent rod for $12. The reel looked corroded but it was paint overspray. Then the reel would barely turn. Penn reel cleaner took off the overspray. Cotton swabs, penetrating oil, paper towels, a dental pick and a little more than an hour and I have a beautiful reel to sell.

Hey I had a random question for you. I was stripping my reels down and cleaning yesterday and on some of my brass gears I was noticing like black splotches on the the brass and none of the black would come off. It's where the drag washers sit and in some of the gear teeth. Is it corrosion or something? Would you recommend some kind of brass cleaner to remove it?

That is a staining or discoloration that occurs with brass. I guess you could use a brass polish to clean it, but it is just cosmetic and causes no harm, so I leave it alone. The tarnish is similar to the patina that comes with copper. Thanks for asking - Dennis
