Dennis, the main gear appears to have been replaced. Looked like a case someone got in over their head and yelled Uncle, send it to Dennis. What I've done on out of production gears on reels, is to use a ignition points or jewelers file to touch up the gears. Being the gear is zinc, it won't take much pressure to remove the offending material if nothing else is available. The Quantum Hot Sauce grease gets around. I think the reason for popularity is the small squeeze tube instead of a container requiring a brush for application.
I have the micro files too. I ordered a new pinion gear and main as replacement parts. It is always good to buy both when one is bad and in this case, they were inexpensive, so it was worth doing its right. Thanks for the tip - Dennis
I really wish I had a few reels from this series nut they are very expensive. Also my vintage reel collection is made up largely of vintage saltwater spinning reels that were manufactured before 1980. This reel series was made in the 1980s I think. I do have a couple reels (not Penn) that also have an axle shaft that attaches to the oscillation block in this way. I have seen bails that drastically affected the performance of the reel because they were bent. That Mitchell 906 I’ve been working on had a non-functioning bail that would not trip or fire because it was bent. I quickly got that fixed. You did great work on this Penn. I’ll get a few of these eventually. I assume this was a USA Penn. if it isn’t these aren’t the reels I want for my collection. I’ve had to bend a number of parts while working on the 286 reels I own. I’ve had a very few disasters but like you I don’t recommend forcing things either. Sometimes you simply have no choice. I honestly thought I saw some slight flaws on the main gear teeth that were visible on the video (says the blind guy, LOL) Super video Dennis! I start back on that 906 tomorrow. - Chris (By the way, the problem with this 906 was not a missing ramp by the bail trip pin as previously thought, It is something else.)
Sometimes the puzzles are harder than others! Keep at it Chris. I ordered replacement gears for this one. Hopefully that gives this reel a 2nd Chance. Best wishes on the 906 - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle I’ll send you an email later. I just finished the 906 and got it in pretty nice shape and no more click sound. The seller agreed to purchase a NOS pinion / bearing that the reel definitely needs. I’m fairly certain that one or two of the ball bearings in the open pinion sleeve are missing making it operate a little little rough. When I can put the new one in this reel should be phenomenal. It is an absolutely beautiful reel. I may eventually replace the spool but the one on the reel is a little worn but not bad at all. I’m proud of the way I fixed it. I’ll send you photos. This was a particularly complex repair. Rick Stivers at YoungMartin’s Reels helped me. We have become good friends! - Chris
I fixed a reel for a friend a couple months ago same problem with the bail spring. ( Didn't take me as long to diagnose the problem however 😉😄). So the spool shaft was installed with the flat side down? The plate that secures it to the block got bent from over tightening? That reel had a lot of problems. The AR override was bent and the main gear is shot. Wonder what the story is with all that?
I think it all happened during reassembly of a basic service - except of the bad bail. My thoughts is that the axle shaft was installed incorrectly and that eliminated the clearance to slide behind the main gear and it was forced through cranking which caused the teeth to get bent out. The A/R shaft may have been bent by removing the main gear the first time without removing the shaft first. Just some thoughts, but I don't think a fish beat this one up. As for the bail, looks like the same. The spring doesn't pop out of the hole. The cover plate holds it in. I would guess it was removed as well and not reset properly - Lessons learned - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle What a mess. I have seen that type of bail spring pop out of position before. Most recently on an Ultra light spinning reel a friend of mine uses for trout. Don't recall if it was Shimano or Pfluger. I suspect he dropped it and some how the jarring impact knocked it out of place.
This is a reel that I’m working on, the anti reverse isn’t working, found same thing , I got this reel second hand cheap at a yard sale with rod $15 ,easy fix
Im starting to wonder if the owner of this reel tried to fix it blind folded. Nothing went back in right. And wouldn't you notice right away when something like the clip to hold the shaft in is not going in correctly and you have to bend it to make it fit?
It is possible. I get reels in a bag more than you would think and many times, folks have started a reassembly wrong and then put it in a bag. This one was certainly a head scratcher as to why they didn't see that the bar was being forced
Hmm - my guess is that some have a shorter pinion gear shaft than others. The torque should be the same. If you leave these loose, the rotor will rock and line will spool unevenly - Dennis

Nice job all the way around on that reel Dennis. Thanks.
Thanks Steve. I appreciate the note. Just ordered the gears and hopefully that will bring it all of the way back - Dennis

Glat to have helped. Sounds like a great find - Best wishes for great fishing with the reel - Dennis
If you can't get the gears, you can always change channel name from "2nd Chance Tackle" to "Borrowed Time Tackle" 😁
Or the reel can be used to give others a 2nd Chance! Thanks
amazing they didn't break something or strip out the screws tightening down so much
It is, except they did break the gears - Thanks - Dennis

Why on some reels you tight rotor nut more and on other less?
