I have a couple 420SS and a couple 4200SS, all bought in the 1980s and 90s for Eastern Sierras trout fishing. These series Penn reels are in the running for most beautiful reels in history. Caught a bunch of trout on 'em as well.
I wish I was the “Chris” sending this to you because I’d love to have one of these. I like the AR on this reel because it doesn’t depend on a spring except for the concentric switch. I spend several hours fighting a spring on the AR dog of a Garcia 9000 reel. It is a horrible design in my opinion. I finally got it right. I had to order a new bearing for that reel but I don’t think it was worth the expense or effort. I love these SS Penn reels though I don’t have any. My most recent Penn reels are a 704Z and 706Z. The 706Z of mine is in your video library. I’m sending you an e-mail about a surprise I’ve had with one of my Bretton Salwater reels. I do not have what I thought I had. Great video of a great reel Dennis!
Great Video Dennis. So, I managed to get my old penn reels I told you about up and running. To deal with the greening on the metal parts, I took a page from your book and used 0000 steel wool and turtle wax chrome polish and was able to remove the greening (with alot of elbow grease). Unfortunately, the greening blistered some of the chrome, so there are bald spots on some of the metal parts (mainly on my 285 Delmar and 60 Long Beach), but, as you always say, the fish don't care about cosmetics. Keep up the great work !
Great Reel nice to see it survived so long without all the complicated technology. I believe simple is better now if ya take a new Shimano anti reverse apart I've heard that just don't even try. I don't know why the manufactures went away from the anti-reverse dogs. At least Penn makes an attempt to delever a top quality product at reasonable a price. The new Penn DX even has a bronze gear. If you hand close the bail on one of those it would last generations.
This is the reel I used 90% of the time I fished salt water for at least 20 years. I still have it ready to go. The only problem I ever had was worn wipers on the dog as addressed here. It will be a sad day if and when this part becomes unavailable.
You can always order one while they are still available. That reel is versatile and you can take it fishing in lots of conditions. It is worth keeping maintained - Thanks for the note and for watching - Dennis
I have 2 of these. On one the spindle doesn’t move up and down and the part on baile that the line feeds through doesn’t spin. On the other the anti reverse is broke. Going to try to fix the anti reverse with this video hope I don’t mess up!
Best wishes for success in the reel repair. A lot of these parts are still available through Mysticparts.com if you need them to complete the repairs - Dennis
My name is Bob, I have a 4500 with the same style dog set up. The reel must be earlier, the dog just sits on a post. There is no place on the post for c clip or screw. Do you have a print that shows if there is some type of hold down to keep the dog steady. I pinched the part of the dog that rides on the rotor as you showed, and it worked for a short time. I believe the dog floating on the post is the issue. Any input will be appreciated. Thank you for your great videos
Yes. The schematic is available from Mysticparts.com and is included in the following link. The earlier versions used a dog with 2 fingers rather than the version with the "E" clip. It is shown on the schematic in the lower corner insert. Best wishes - Dennis www.mysticparts.com/Assets/images/pennparts/schematics/4500ss.pdf

Yes they are. Good design never goes out of fashion
My favorite series of Penn spinning reels. This one and the next series. 👍 Thanks.
Those reels are good, but a bit bulky. I happen to like the Captiva series, especially for surf - Dennis
Thanks…recently p/u a 4500 and 5500 at a yard sale,this will be a great help
Sounds like a great find - Best wishes - Dennis

That will happen. Fortunately, the line will cover a lot of the spool damage and the greening won't wear or abraid the line - Dennis

They have had varying degrees of quality over time, but the product today is top notch. Thanks for the note Bob - Dennis
Nice fix on the reel!
Thanks 👍. Just giving it a 2nd Chance! Thanks for watching - Dennis

Glad it was helpful! Thank you for the note and watching
A true classic
Yes it is. So many of them are still fishing decades after production stopped.
