This is not just one of the best songs ever written, but it is about The Troubles In Northern Ireland so it is a very valid one- the miracle we're waiting for still is peace. Shame it gets cut off at the end, the song. Also, on vocals here is Keith Murrell- one of the best singers ever! (And not bad looking either).
I used to think this was about The Troubles when in fact it's about fighting off a nuclear holocaust AND The Troubles. We're more worried than ever now. However, this is great melodic rock song with strong vocals from Keith Murrell who I am a big fan of. The video is ridiculous. Who thought it was EVER gonna work to shoot a video for a band in a junkyard full of dismantled washing machines!!!!?
highndry Too true, this AOR sound was such a departure from Power and Passion. Sad times. They were under pressure having had a two year hiatus between albums, John's vocals had gone, Tommy was ill and the record company were making demands whilst the band was fragmented, and suggesting heavily they'd be dropped if they didn't comply. They lost so many fans as a result.
to be fair I am basing what I said on an extensive interview I have seen with Pat and John for an upcoming TG4 television show in Ireland. Pat says, verbatim, 'there is not a lot to be said about that album [Growing Up the Hard Way] except it was to radical a departure from where were' John then adds 'yeah I think at that point we'd become dishonest with ourselves and the music we were producing and it cost us a lot of fans' They also explain that Pat was forced to team up with writers for the first time and was working away from the family with John and Tommy both back in Ireland and that the band had become fragmented and that he felt under pressure to agree to the record company's request that they go after a more commercial sound, the AOR sound and that had they collectively been the three heads together they wouldn't have gone along with the changes. Pat does say there is good in this album but that it needed to be played a lot heavier. They do also explain that the hiatus hurt the band immeasurably, they were off the scene for two years which John says was an age in the music scene especially at a time they needed to press on with another album. So I can only base it on what Pat and John said in that interview and it runs counter to most of what you have said.
If what you say is to believed, then I must had missed the follow-up album to this massive hit ,Growing up the Hard Way. Its obvious record company pressure to change their sound to a bad version of Mr. Big is evident to even the uninformed ear. This album sounds like a Michael Bolton reject. The McManus' 6 year run of big beat, hard rock, came to a screeching halt. Sad all that hard work was in vain....
Not the singer, they used to be a three piece with John McManus the bass player singing....The singer was Keith Murrell who sang backing vocals with Cliff Richard and later went on to join Airrace with Jason Bonham. They split after Tommy the drummer died from cancer/lukemia...Pat the guitarist still gigs around Ireland, UK and Europe.
I've wanted to ask anyone who knows, what the connection to this song and Samantha Fox's Spirit Of America? Take a listen... same music, alternate lyrics... ? This was a Huge stretch from Mama's Boy's Previous Albums. And I only knew the Samantha Fox song 'cause... well, She was HOT! Still is... Unfortunately to Penis, she don't like 'em.
changed the dynamics from 3 piece to the 4 piece band. But a great album as were the others. Evolution? or managment dealings to do with the music of the time?
i remember them supporting hawkwind at the liverpool empire, they got booed off stage they gave the two fingered salute and stormed off, i was laughing my tits off,ive never seen anything like that b4 or after, imagine it, they where proper shiite, big blond hair skin tight leather pants, i bet they didnt forget that gig lol still shiite now
It was shot by Ulster Television/ UTV when they were in Belfast for a gig....It was shot at the old Belfast Gasworks, Ormeau Road. There is another official video/concert performance promo for this song.
@@markbro4427 Was going to say, having seen the other version (where they're on stage), what was this all about? But if it was for a TV show, that makes sense. Didn't the lead singer end up doing backing vocals in Cliff Richard's band?
This has to be the worst video I've ever seen. I love Mamas Boys up to this point. Just couldn't wrap my head around a new singer. I never seen new music from them after this.
I Love Keith's vocals, but, there is always a but, and I know I'll get hammered for this, lambasted, it's a wee bit too poppy for my taste, I refer you to the POWER and PASSION and Def Leppards Pyromania and Mama's Boys - Mama's Boys
Thought Keith did a great job although this album was a huge departure for the bands sound Video is up there with Journey Separate Ways for awfulness though...lol
There is another official concert type promo video.....This was shot quickly for local news by Ulster Television when the band were in town for a gig, it was rushed and a bit crap tbh. It was shot on the site of the old Belfast gasworks.
Mama's Boys, my first concert in 1988.... Thanks a lot for sharing this video
Mama's Boys as Legends Of Rock and Roll band 🎸🎶
This was 1 of my first 12, records I bout and if I rem it was red. I’m getting old but they where great 👍🏴
Never seen this video. Love this band!
souvenirs souvenirs....groupe decouvert en 83 et vu sur scene à l exo 7 de petitquevilly
Mama's Boys were a good, raw and powerful rock n' roll band......and then this shite happened.
Are you high? This song is an absolute bop!
I guess you could compare this to van halen / van hagar. This album wasn't bad it just wasn't a mamas boys album.

How many were left then?? Keith's vocals are CLASS!!!

Love this song. Cracking vocals even though Keith comes across a little theatrical.
Very theatrical. It’s cringy. Great song though
Masterpiece.
lovinging it
who was the brilliant record company guy who thought this poppy record would take them to the top? This total change of sound killed them....

don't know about that but it's still a cracking song and that's all that matters 2 me!
+ you really can't go wrong with performoning at a rubbish dump & kicking some washing machines with a burning barrel in the background
Irish Brothers

That's. The. SpiritofAmerica!
Thats a great observation, cross between Alan Partridge and his other character Tony Felloni(portuguse one)
Love it! But I always thought it was to a 80s post-apocalyptic soundtrack, similar to MegaForce, or You Got The Touch.
Don't forget they became "Celtus" who were unbelievable!!!

It's a rewrite, they were both on Jive Records....Pat MacManus played some guitar on her solo album
Any live footage of this song out there?? anyone????

Keith rocks, who is he???
they did a great stevie wonder cover on the album tho

Love how the drummer is hitting the air
The innocence of the 80's 😂
Superb band. I saw them in a Northern Irish club in '83 (as a three piece).
This video isn't the best representation of them, sadly.
No expense spared on this video I see!

I swear I've heard this before
Like their earlier stuff, was harded edged and better sounding overall
Yea, not the best for these guys..love the raw earlier records..pop...shit!
Singer looks like Alan Partridge!
Really like that album and track, but damn this video is low budget
pas super période pour les mamas boys, trop fm...
Good song, horrible Mama's Boys song...... I always wonder what 80's teen action movie this was written for but got turned down.
This song should be in Cobra Kai. :-P
Thought Keith did a great job although this album was a huge departure for the bands sound

A JOURNEY clone wannabe
So so so not as good as their other stuff...at all
Poncing, preening, prettyboy shite
Wanna be Bon Jovi
You know this band was active way before bon Jovi even existed right?
kinda sucks
