I remember once seeing him outside Branch end Garage petrol station counting out some money from a hand full of loose change.
I said hiya Dennis, (not Tim lol) in the Blue bell last night?
He said eye, just buying a paper.
I said you look a bit rough like, he chuckled, iye, just a bit, I need some breakfast.
I went in and paid for my fuel, walked back out and as I passed him, I said what about the toon, and he said shocking, and I said well I kna, that's why I stopped following football, too many, to many broken hearts, and he said eye, ah Diven't blame ya.
Then I turned around and said, Sorry mate, But can I shake your hand, and bless him, he was like, eh iye and stuck his counted change back in his left hand and shook my hand as I said, its just is I want to shake your hand because you are a symbol of Newcastle like the Tyne bridge.
He said iye, I wouldn't gan that far like, haha
I got in the car and as I looked over to him as I pulled away he seemed to chuckle and carried on counting his money.
That was around twenty years ago.
