Thank you so much for hosting this book club!! I personally wasn't depressed by the Woman in the Room; I wasn't terribly invested in what he was doing because I was waiting for the twist the shed new light on it. Then the twist never happened. Wow shocked how low Boogeyman is on the list!!
I really enjoyed "Night Shift"! It's a fantastic collection of short stories. It's really interesting to see the diverse opinions about all the stories. Some of my least favorites were "Battleground," "The Woman in the Room," and "The Lawnmower Man." On the other hand, my favorites include "One for the Road," "Children of the Corn," and "The Boogeyman." I genuinely liked every story in the collection, but those are my thoughts on them.
Someday, I will read Stephen King short stories, and maybe I’ll read the Night Shift collection! I have the hardest time motivating myself with short stories for some reason, but I’m so happy this readalong has been such a huge success for you and everyone who has participated! 🎉
One thing that isnt said enough about King is his audacity and wit to take absolutely silly premises and make big time stories. I mean, thats a huge talent for a writer to have. So im glad you brought that up🤩
Yea! Totally agree. If someone threw out half of his premises in any pitch meeting, they’d get crazy looks and said that it was stupid, but most of the time, King makes it work
Good list, agree with most of it. Glad to see 'Last Rung on the Ladder' so high, I found that one very moving and definitely stayed with me. I would have 'The Man Who Loved Flowers' higher. I know it's short and insubstantial but, for me, the ending is probably the purest moment of horror in the whole book. Children of the Corn I understand the disagreement - watching the film as a kid scared the crap out of me so it helps to picture those creepy actors when reading it!
@@BookishDrummer Maybe no coincidence either that your 1 & 2 were also adapted to film (assuming you've seen that?) Or maybe they are just that good anyway and that's why they were chosen to be adapted!
@@markgillespie3971 they were both in the movie Cats Eye, if I remember correctly! Great movie, I haven’t seen it since I was a kid though, I need to go back and rewatch it. Maybe? Honestly his novellas get turned into the best movies, Shawshank, Stand By Me, The Mist,
@@BookishDrummer Absolutely. Did you know that Frank Darabont's (Shawshank, Green Mile, The Mist) first short movie was an adaptation of 'The Woman in the Room'? And it's on RUclips!
I’m still surprised that you have Children of the Corn so high on the list but I guess your memories of the adaptation(s) could definitely affect your enjoyment. I love how you called out Andrew for hating I Am the Doorway 🤣🤣 I think you hit the nail on the head with The Last Rung on the Ladder just being more emotional! That’s why it worked so well for me I think! Definitely love myself an emotional read (hence Kaigen)!! 😅
A couple of thoughts....first, for a 40 minute video, this flew by really quickly! I started out feeling a bit indignant that so many of my favorites were in the bottom 5, then I realized there are really no BAD ones in the collection. Even Night Surf, while being in need of being fleshed out, is very thought provoking. My least favorites tend to be the ones that have a vibe of a horror comic. My favs of your bottom ones are Jerusalem's Lot and Strawberry Spring. I am not as enamored with Quitters Inc as you are...I think because it is an uncomfortable read for me. I did not read them in order. I picked and chose based on length & how much time I had in a sitting. Do you suppose order influences their impact? Thanks as always!
Thanks! I tried to make it shorter, but I’m glad to hear it went by quickly! I would agree with you, there’s no real bad ones here. And that’s okay, that’s the fun part of the book club for me is getting everyone’s differing opinions on these stories! And I don’t think the reading order matters. Although in Skeleton crew there is a two parter (Milkman #1 and Milkman #2) so make sure to read those in order
Have you seen Cats Eye? It’s an anthology containing both The Ledge and Quitters Inc plus another story that was written specifically for the movie. It’s fantastic and is one of my favourite Stephen King movies! Also I’ll probably start commenting on this account now, I am the same person as ‘Seek and Destroy’ who commented on all your videos pretty much lol. But I’ll start using this account more now.
I loved Battleground. I used to play with those toy soldiers and I could see those bastards coming to life. Also, I like that it was laced with King's dark humor.
I actually bought this one as an eBook because I think it was one of the books that was on sale at the time. I could be wrong. I haven't read it yet though, but I should probably get to it already haha. Great video by the way 👍
5. Sometimes They Come Back 4. I Know What You Need 3. One For The Road 2. Jerusalem's Lot 1. Children Of The Corn Honorable mentions for Graveyard Shift and The Last Rung Of The Ladder. The rest are slightly above average IMO. Overall, Night Shift is nice collection, but - though unpopular opinion - a little bit overrated. ✌

Thanks Kevvie! It’s been a lot of fun! And yeah, it’s hard to rank all of these! It might change every time I read it

Thanks Johanna! There’s always Skeleton Crew next month! 🤔🤷♂️🥰
its worth it. I thought i didnt like short stories, but he somehow manages to flesh the stories out in 20-40 pages. It doesnt feel lacking.

My favourite collection is "Nightmares and Dreamscapes". It's a BIG one and I found most of the stories to be "bangers".
Nice, I disagree that’s my least favorite lol what’s your fav in N&D?
@@BookishDrummer "Home Delivery"...mostly because of the sly humour throughout.
@@davidj.thompson mine is hands down “suffer the little children”

It’s definitely fun, and the ending was great
Quitters inc is incredible
100% agree of course!
Yeah, an organization like that COULD actually make me quit!

Thanks! Definitely recommend trying it out!

I’m all for having unpopular opinions!!! 🤣 Whats your favorite short story collection by him?
That thumbnail 💞💞
The thing is... your opinions are wrong. That's what the club was trying to say. 🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣 oh that’s funny 😜
I bailed when Night Surf was picked as worst story.
Lol is that one of your favorites?
