But no Punjabi actor from undividied and divided India gained so much of fame and name like Suraiya Jamal Sheikh and nobody earned so much as she. When Suraiya sings, you can instantly recognize her Punjabi ancestry. There is one song in which Lata and Suraiya sing together and Suraiya's voice overshadows Lata's voice. Lata's voice is a ''baby'' voice. Suraiyas voice is rich, warm, sweet and melodius and literally vibrates with emotion. And What an actor she was - she was enthralling. No wonder she was given the title 'Mallika-e-Husn'' and ''Mallika-e Tarannum''. She was the most beautiful face in the Indian sub-continent. Yet she did not like singing or acting. She lived some time in Lahore but her birth was in Gujranwala in Punjab. She later went to Bombay. She was a broad minded person and was very kind in heart. She did what NO Muslim would have ever dared to do; she called her home ''Krishna Mahal'' and she wanted to marry a Hindu. She is the true eiptome of undivided India. No singer or actor comes anywhere close to her though she acted only in a few films and sang less than a hundred songs.To see Suraiya in her full glory, you must gaze upon the image of Suraiya in the costume of Radha. She is awesome. She had the power to play on the feelings and emotions of those who saw and heard her. She was pure genius blessed with beauty and a wonderful voice. Suraiya was a great human being.
