Loved these tips, Margot! As a college sophomore, here are some extra tips for those who are interested: 1) Space-saving velvet hangers. They're SO much better than bulky, easily-breakable plastic hangers. 2)A SECOND set of sheets. So you can immediately put them on and not have to wash your first set right away. 3)A ROLLING laundry basket. Trust me - this will save you from so much pain. 4)Basics of medicine - pain relief, allergy relief, dayquil/nyquil, etc. Already having these on you BEFORE you get sick will save you a trip to the store when you're already feeling under the weather.
totally agree with the second set of sheets thing! it's a pain in the ass to have to wait to be able to sit in your bed because you're waiting to have clean sheets. also on the hangers note, i was able to get some pretty thin plastic hangers from target, like a pack of 24 for 3.99 or something and if they broke it was whatever because they were so cheap and also saved space! i know sometimes the velvet ones can be a bit spendy and you don't get many of them.
Heads up to incoming freshman (coming from a college sophomore), only bring what you need. Don't over pack. Seriously, it decreases productivity and creates an overall clutter. Bring what you think you will actually use, and then during your winter break, bring home what you didn't use enough to warrant keeping around. Since you'll be living in a small space, you don't want too many things. Overall, decreasing the things you bring helps you learn what items you actually use and overall keeps you more frugal (a good trait to have as a college student). Best of luck to all you incoming freshman!
I use my humidifier all the time! It can get super dry in the winter, especially if you go to school in places where it gets really cold. It will save your voice and your skin! :)
Emily Dinunzio where do you go to school? And where do you find the room for a humidifier?? I'd looooove to send one to school with my son. He's used to one at home :). BUT, I'm just wondering where he'll find room for it in his dorm room....?? He'll be starting at U of Illinois in only two more weeks.....😩😢😢😢
I'm literally so thankful for the dorm style I have! The school I'll be going to has ALL updated suite-style rooms, so the most you'll ever share a bathroom with is one other person BUT the room I'll be in is 2 bathrooms, a living room and 4 private bedrooms :) so excited for freshman year
A drying rack is also very good for clothes that you can't put in the dryer like blouses and knitted sweaters. you can also use it just to save on the cost of electricity 😊
I'm not in college yet I will be this coming fall but my college tells the freshman to bring a mini fridge (kinda pricey) but is really helpful if you wanna store foods
I live in Texas and it literally blows my mind that there is no AC in your dorm room!! I would die in August through basically November when it actually gets chilly.. lol
Marcella Reyes I'd honestly be.... Okay? In mass if there was no air condition in August I'd get a migraine like it gonna be humid, and... Why do people call 79 cold... It's warm
Chloe Cochrane people actually say 79 is cold? damn, lol i live in Maine and when we finally get like 50-60 after like half a year of winter everybody goes swimming lol. people from the south are so damn weak lmaoo
I definitely want to add: if you go to a smaller school or you don't have transportation (no car) then bring games and/or cards and things to do with you! I didn't and I go to a small school and none of my friends had a car on campus and we just about lost our minds we got such bad cabin fever and our rec facilities aren't the best so we all ended up bringing a few games... it's not as bad later in the semester once you get busier, but for the beginning of the semester, especially freshman year, bring something that you can do with your friends or that you can invite people to use so you can make friends!
For those of you actually on your way to college like me ,These are different for everybody. For example the shower caddy: unless you're in a community style then you really wouldn't need one. Also the quarters for the laundry machines, like i'm going to florida southwestern and all dorms have there own washer and dryers so wouldnt be necessary. and by the way, this is by far the most helpful dorm essentials video ive cane across and ive watched at least 1000000000000
Payton I have a son heading off to college in less than 2 weeks😩😭😭. Anything else that comes to mind that you can recommend?? He'll be at U of Illinois. Thanks!!
lily d It's good that you're thinking about it now because I basically waited until my senior year to even start looking, which was a disaster. Tour any schools you're interested in because I thought for sure that I wanted to go to Carnegie Mellon, but I hated the atmosphere and haughtiness when I toured it; touring honestly helps the process so much.
lily d ya, I know, you're right about that! Youte being smart about it :). My son is heading off to college in 2 weeks (a freshman this year), and my daughter is gonna be a junior in high school this year. The next 2 yrs are gonna FLY by, and b4 I know it, it'll be time for HER to go off to college, too😢😢. The years WILL go by quickly. Smart to start thinking about it even now....!
The hanging shower caddy! Don't get one that goes on the ground. Also lots of lights! If you are in a traditional dorm room it can get pretty dark in there when it isn't sunny outside.
I feel like I’m super lucky because the college I’m going to next year has no communal bathrooms at all. They’re either shared with just one roommate or with your roommate and 2 suitemates
Bring TONS of hairbands and/or bobby pins if youre someone tat does your hair everyday and also having an aroma diffuser is great and also bring a GOOGLE HOME cos you can ask it to set alarms, timers, answers to questions, use it as a calculator, etc
SO HELPFUL!! The towel wrap idea is genius, I would've never thought of that!! Please do a journaling/calendar video, I want to come into college fully prepared this fall haha
i'm also a freshman in college and something i really recommend is one of those chair pillows you can put on your bed. they're super convenient if you wanna chill or do hw on your bed! it's way more comfortable in my opinion
hi margot!!! love your videos and your personality , your so true to yourself and thats something that lacks in youtube cause everyone tries to copy successful youtubers, can you do a q&a pleaseee i will love to now more about you!!
THAT YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!! One thing I wanted to add was that when buying a calender, I prefer the whiteboard calenders (i think that's what they are called) because it's reusable and you;re saving paper, I aso find it easier to wipe off an event once it is done.
Although I'm not in college (yet) this video was soooo helpful and I will surely look back at it once I go to college! Great idea to do a video about your journal and how you keep organized. Loved to know!!
More things I use every day in my college room: Speaker (be considerate of roommates and neighbors but a little music doesn't hurt now and then), fairy lights (or any additional lighting cause dorm lights suck), & a clock (i bought it just for decoration purposes but use it so much just to keep me on track and less dependent on my phone)
Here's a few things: 1) Something to place your binders in. Most people don't think about this but binders take up space and it's better to have a specific place for them rather than leaving all of them on your desk. 2) A vacuum, some colleges may supply these but getting a vacuum is definitely worth it if you have a carpeted floor. You don't need a huge one just something lightweight and small. 3) Alarm clock, I know most people use their phone, but an alarm clock is so much nicer. Mine is a small alarm clock that allows you to play music through your phone and also charges your phone. This way I'm not taking up outlet space. 4) Lanyard, I use this for my id badge, personal preference though. 5) Desk lamp, I have a bedside lamp and a desk lamp. The desk lamp is brighter so it's great for studying. College lights aren't the best. You don't need both lamps, but invest in a good desk lamp. Hope these help!!!
My mini-fridge is great (each school has their own allowance on how tall they should be and stuff). I adore that for more healthy snacks (yogurt, water even like Britas and such). Hanging shelves like the ones to store sweaters in. First Aid Kit for any scrapes, cuts, or bruises. Tylenol/Midol/Advil/Benadryl/Robitussin.
along with the shoes thing, get a cheap throw blanket from target or walmart that you won't mind getting dirty or ratty. my freshman year, my friends on my floor and i would hang out in the common area and we all had blankets to cuddle up with or sit on if there weren't enough seats and by the end of the year, mine got pretty worn!!
I'm going to college in a month and I'm binge watching your videos. So helpful thank you! Do you have any workout routines for avoiding the freshman15?
Dasha B smart that you're watching them a month before. My son is leaving for college in TWO WEEKS. I'm panicking while I'm watching this. Aaarrrrrgggghhhhhhh!
Erica Wolf hey! I've been told maaaaaany times that command hooks do NOT work on cinder block type walls (which is what my son's dorm room walls are). They say that only duck tape works on cinder block. Any experience with that???? Thanks!
Mel Bruno You think it'd be included with how much money you're paying already to live there. We have to pay at my school, though it's a lot cheaper than Margot's (like $1 or $1.50). I'm honestly jealous of you because I feel like I'll have spent $50 by the end of the semester.
Mel Bruno agree about the laundry thing! We are paying over $30,000+ per year just for my son's tuition, room & board. Thank GOD that laundry services ARE included in that $30,000! When I was in college (back in the Stone Age LOL), I did have to pay for laundry, and I can remember going through tons and tons and tons of quarters. Ugh. Thankfully my son won't have to worry about bringing those rolls of quarters like I did :)
I would also include a desk lamp in the list and probably some shoes, you could wear when you go to the shower, because if you're sharing your bathroom with lots of different people, especially with guys, it can get really disgusting sometimes
josephine musgrave yes!!! I JUST heard someone else advise that as well. And a GOOD one. Not one that can either be easily broken into or even stolen (God forbid). Is there one in particular that you've used and can recommend??? Thanks!
I think those febreze plug ins or oil diffusers are really nice because obviously you can’t burn candles and sometimes your dorm/room just smells a little funky. You can even get plug ins from Bath and Body Works (a lil pricey).
i really like the 'card holder' tip, but i'm scared that if for any reason someone steals my phone they take the most importants cards i need everyday with it
I personally recommend a brits filter. Not only will it keep all the water right next to you in your dorm, but the water fountain water sometimes tastes kind of off if you are sensitive to that kind of thing.
I'm so excited for college! I'm graduating high school this Saturday (May 27th) & I'm going to college in the fall. These videos are everything for me right now!! But I'm going to be in an apartment, so it's a little different, but I'll be sharing a room so I still need these storage/space saving hacks!!
Why am I obsessed with all your college videos when I'm British and going to university next year which is soo different to American college 😂 love u margot x
Do you have any internacional students friends at university? It'd be so nice if you film a video about their story, how they got to America, how got into the unicersity and stuff, if they have any scholarships...
Hristina Nikolic just watch other videos about it. she’s not an international student so she won’t make a video on it. just look it up on youtube. there are even specifics depending on the school.
I totally agree that under the bed storage is super important. I keep my snacks in bins there because honestly no one cares what under your bed looks like.
I'm not in college yet, but I've been taking online college classes and i have UNiDAYS and it's 10000/10 it's a site that gives you/ tells you where you can get student discounts, like Apple, UO, Apple Music, Spotify, etc. All you need is a college email to get an account and it's sooo hepful
I was so lucky and won the housing lottery and got a single room which is connected to a living room and only have to share the bathroom with another suitemate
Love this video Margot!! I'm getting so excited for college even tho I'm only a junior still haha! I'm doing college tours rn and seriously can not wait
Most helpful video. TFS! Good luck with school. My daughter is going to be a freshman and I am helping her since she is a busy girl till school starts.
This is more of a backpack thing, but external battery packs. You do NOT want your phone dying in the middle of Midterm season when all the outlets are taken. Also, an external hard drive; my computer’s charging port broke, so I had to quickly load all my schoolwork on to it before it died, so I can write my final paper on a school computer. Without it, I wouldn’t have been able to save my outline or anything else, so it definitely saved my butt.

BRING Emergen-c because literally it will save you so much sickness
We also make videos about college if anyone's interested :)

I'm in college and a yoga mat is so so helpful for exercise motivation because sometimes I don't wanna walk to the gym and can just do it in my dorm!!
+Haley Easthom this is good advice ^
Hello Name Twin thank you for this dvise

Mia Lesko loooooove sugar snap peas!!!😊

Hp sells a cheap printer for $30
It's only function is to print which was basically all I needed
Tiffany Fan did you know printers cost more to make than they do to sell, BUT, that is why the ink is crazy expensive👍
A drying rack is also very good for clothes that you can't put in the dryer like blouses and knitted sweaters. you can also use it just to save on the cost of electricity 😊
not even in college but watching anyway because... margot (:

Lia Athena hey I'm going to be uploading a freshman dorm tour soon so subscribe so you don't miss it
Diana Sims good luck :)
I'm not in college yet I will be this coming fall but my college tells the freshman to bring a mini fridge (kinda pricey) but is really helpful if you wanna store foods
+Madee Andrews YES very important- some schools also have a renting program (that's what I did!)
Madee Andrews hey I'm going to be uploading a freshman dorm tour soon so subscribe so you don't miss it
you can sometimes get a mini fridge online from sites like letgo for a lot cheaper just be vigilant about the quality and whom you buy from
I live in Texas and it literally blows my mind that there is no AC in your dorm room!! I would die in August through basically November when it actually gets chilly.. lol
Marcella Reyes I thought the same thing!!! When she said no AC I literally gasped. (I live in SE Louisiana)
Marcella Reyes same but for the opposite reason, I'm from Minnesota and I would literally freeze to death because it's always freezing here
Same here! I live in Mississippi and the heat and humidity would be unbearable in August through November when it's still 80°
Marcella Reyes I'd honestly be.... Okay? In mass if there was no air condition in August I'd get a migraine like it gonna be humid, and... Why do people call 79 cold... It's warm

Rain boots. I live in the valley in Michigan. And it always rains. Umbrellas break and are a pain with the wind.

To add onto the planner situation , always write the assignment in the current spot on calendar and on the spot the day before. Trust me it helps.
Can you do a video on how to save money on clothing in college and like your fav places to shop online or at your college
Go to target or walmart and buy the clothes that are on sale or just the cheap clothes in general lol

omg this is super duper helpful! not like those other dorm videos where they only talk about aesthetic decor

COMMAND HOOKS!!
Erica Wolf hey! I've been told maaaaaany times that command hooks do NOT work on cinder block type walls (which is what my son's dorm room walls are). They say that only duck tape works on cinder block. Any experience with that???? Thanks!
I think it's crazy they make you pay to use the laundry room my school it's included in the tuition, you don't have to swipe your id or anything

As a freshman, I was in a dorm with with my own shower, bathroom, kitchen, living room, and individual room.
Without it, I wouldn’t have been able to save my outline or anything else, so it definitely saved my butt.
love your college videos!! syracuse is actually my dream school and even though I didn't get accepted for this fall i really hope to transfer
