  • Water Country in Portsmouth, New Hampshire is arguably New England's most well-known water park. Owned and operated by Palace Entertainment, this water park features a diverse lineup of tube and body slides. And I think this may be the best water park in New England for families.

Haven't been to this water park in years, always had a blast, but I always found the wave pool to be underwhelming since it shoots waves from the sides of the pool, don't know why they set it up that way.

At my home waterpark, Safari Joes H2O, we have a very similar tower to Patriots Tower. Ours is larger. We also replaced the 2 speed slides after 2015 with one that immediately drops just like the previous ones, and another that goes out then down. But somehow, those are even bumpier than the ones we replaced. During that conversion, we did get a great trap door slide added on at the top. The 3 slides that are 2/3 the way up the tower have been there forever, but those are very smooth. As long as you don't wear a shirt, and arch your back to get your rear end off the slide, you'll be flying down those slides way too fast. Most people either wear shirts or sit up, or both, and they come to dead stops throughout.

    • @CanobieCoaster

Shirts are great to prevent sunburns, but they definitely slow you down.

Oh man this brings back memories. My family and extended family would drag us down there since we were in Massachusetts.
I remember the long drive, the parking struggle, buying tickets under the hot Sun. What was worse was how with all the commercials you thought (as a kid) that they would give you a floater. But instead if you wanted one it was $5-$10 to borrow one. So most of us would wait for someone to leave theirs behind. I only managed ONCE to get one because every kid was so possessive over them!
The ones the ride provided for you had to remain there. And I don't know about that extra seating 😂. My family never sat at the benches because in a full day everything was taken. Even the hot/sun seats. So we actually had a tradition of opening our foldable chairs and coolers right next to the Double Geronimo, beside the tree coverage (it used to be painted white back then)! I don't like the ants crawling while we ate, or the flies flying by. So we would go in the ride to escape them. For that ride, the staff would lay you down with your arms crossed. You couldn't see anything until they pushed you down! The slide was vertical so it was almost like sliding down at 90 degrees. The only thing I hated about it was how much chaffing you would get being pushed down. Oh and those wedgies 😂!
We sat there every year under the trees and ate there. No staff said anything because every spot was taken. It was also close to the entrance so parents just sat there XD. Occasionally we would also camp next to the Double Dive Boggan. Even though it looks clean now I bet people are still climbing over the fencing and walls.
I had my interesting share of experiences since when it got really hot you would find dead dragonflies floating beside you (and I have a phobia of insects). And the changing bathrooms at the front also were plagued with groups of flies.
I didn't know how to swim but I never had a life vest because everyone either rented them, or just didn't let their kids swim into the deeper pools. That didn't stop my older siblings from taking me to the Wave Ride. I would always end up swallowing water because the waves pushed you around and I wasn't allowed to hang onto the edges 😢. But it's true that the staff were friendly. I think they enjoyed messing with the patrons too. On that Wave Ride the Lifeguard/Staffer would yell out in his speaker, "do you guys want some more", and everyone would go crazy over them making the wave current stronger! Not every staff was the same though. We were once told to move from our sitting spot despite there being no room! And every chair, for every part of the park, on a full day, was always taken! Even the eating tables! You'd see a towel in the chair and people were very protective about it.
But the worst thing was the Dragon Ride. My family and I went at least 10 times during my childhood. I never got on it because the lines stretched out. I once waited an hour, but the wait was estimated to be 2-3. My older siblings managed to get on it twice though. But I preferred the Kids theme section. The pirate hat fills with water, flips and dunks, and you can wait, or watch some poor sap get soaked! They had lots of bits and toys to shoot water at the other guests 😂😂😂.
But the Lazy River was nice too since it just slowly pulled you around.
Anyway, I'd love to see more videos on the differences between other Water Country Rides in other states. I've only ever gone to this one. 🥰🥰🥰
P.S. My siblings were strong swimmers so they would go to the deepest depth of the Wave Ride Pool, but they would get bored if the waves weren't strong enough. Those adrenaline junkies 😂😂😂
There was one more rode I remember. Not sure if it was removed but when you finished the slide, three other slides would join together at the end. It looks similar to the Racer Slide in VA Water Country.

I used to go here all the time as a kid. My personal favorite spot was by the mat slides. You have the little whirlpool right by it too. The Geronimo used to scare me every time I got to the top of the stairs but they were actually very safe slides. The only thing that would injure you would a wedgie or burns from the slide if you stuck your arms out

The worst ride there has got to be Dr Vons. If you're old, you dont get a sense of fear from the dark. Because of the dark you can't tell if you're going fast or not, thus giving no sense of thrill. All I felt was confusion. Also, the line there is absurd. You can get many rides in the far superior Dragon's Den.

This is a great water park. Unfortunately I am not really a water-park person. But I am married to one!
My first time here was back when we were first dating, and I'll never forget it--temperatures were in the low 70s, the place was slammed anyway for some reason, and I remember just spending all this time standing in line wet and shivering. I was game enough to actually go on one of the nearly-vertical Double Geronimo slides, which was the only time I've ever done that.
But we went back a few years ago and I had a lot of fun, though honestly it was because I spent most of my time just riding the lazy river with our daughter over and over while my spouse hit the big slides.
They hit Hurricane Harbor when we went to SFNE this summer, and I think they actually preferred Water Country because they didn't like Six Flags' wave pool as much. I think my personal favorite in the region is Lake Compounce's just because I liked the tube slide in the middle of the lazy river. Canobie's has the problem that they only offer little bitty tubes that I can't fit on.

I think the wave pool is showing it’s age. Also I would love for them to add a capsule slide. As far as the wave pool is concerned, perhaps they would keep the aesthetics but modernize the technology. Currently the wave pool has two types of waves but newer technology can provide more advanced waves.

the park has never been very large, the Patriot used to be Geronimo and it had 2 identical slides side by side, the attendants would launch people down the slide in pairs taking emphasis on people in a party. honestly the best way to experience the park is for a kids birthday party, they have a designated area for it and make special arrangements to entertain the kids between times of water sliding. Naturally prices are high, but when you know the engineering involved in maintaining a water system like that, you understand why. My company did the mulch in the flower beds around the park in a large blowing vehicle, and when we told them there was going to be a lot of mulch that will get in the water, they assured us the filtration system will clear it out in minutes, and they were right

Dangerous gangs there it’s not safe. Last week my nephew, his 5 month pregnant wife and brother in-law were attacked by 15-20 men. They had asked a group of them to please stop swearing in front of their kids while in line at the water slide. When they came down the slide WITH their kids aged 8,7 and 4. They were severely beaten for 20 or so minutes while security looked on and did nothing. The pregnant woman was punched in the face!! All in front of their kids; who needles to say were terrified and still terrified!! Police came after 20 minutes or so… didn’t even file a report….So, go at your own risk.
