    The PaK 40 was one of the most successful German anti-tank gun designs of World War Two. The first pre-production models entered service on the eastern front in November 1941 and from 1942 they were used on all fronts in large numbers.

    Both PaK38 and PaK40 stayed in Finnish Army inventory until mid-1980s. High quality guns indeed.

      Tenavatuokio why? They can’t do anything to a modern tank right?

      @@crunch9876 Not effective against modern tanks. However they were considered to be effective against [Russian] armoured vehicles of 1980s. As I wrote these guns were decommissioned over 30 years ago.

      @icyknightmare4592 5 лет назад +71

      @@crunch9876 It's the stationary nature of anti tank guns more than their raw firepower that made them obsolete when good ATGMs came around. Most military armored vehicles aren't tanks. A modern MBT would bounce those rounds all day long, but lighter IFVs and transports would still take serious damage from a few hits from a PaK 40, especially in an ambush scenario. Weapons like the Javelin, ERYX, or Kornet are exponentially more mobile, far deadlier to armor than a towed direct fire cannon. Anyone trying to operate a stationary cannon on a modern battlefield is going to die very quickly because they can't move after taking a shot.

    • @CoIdHeat
      @CoIdHeat 5 лет назад +41

      To be fair a lot of Cold War Tank and Armored Car Designs, including even some MBT, had weaker armor against kinetic rounds than a lot of WW2 tanks. It still stayed relevant and the Israeli Army also used improved WW2 tanks right into the 70s or even 80s.

    37mm PaK was sometimes called the Heeresanklopfgerät (army knock-knock device) because it wasn't capable of penetrating modern tanks. It was more like politely knocking on the door of a tank, asking the crew if they were in the mood for tea.

    • @AFT_05G

      17 Pounder was only best with his APDS round which was rare in use.I would chose 75mm Kwk 42 and 88mm KwK 36/43/Flak any day.Also British projectiles didn't have explosive mass.They simply just designed for armor piercing.

      They made various engines like the BMW 003 turbo jet engines for the He-162 jet and piston engines like the BMW 801 used in the FW 190 and JU-88 they also manufactured multiple ground vehicles like motorcycles with sidecars like the BMW R71, but this is not the only modern car manufacturer that also had a role in WWII, Rolls-Royce also developed engines for aircraft for the allies like the Merlin engines used on the Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster and other aircraft, but these 2 are only examples there more companies that also made other things, like Ferdinand Porsche himself designed the Ferdinand Porsche Tank destroyer, Tiger Porsche Heavy Tank and Maus Super Heavy Tank, Hugo Boss made the SS uniforms, and there's a lot more but I'm not gonna fill this reply with all of them, it would be nice to see a video by simple history talking about all these modern brands we all know and their history in WWII, but this would probably be split into a couple of videos cuz there are a few :)

    Most People go to say that the 88mm was the Best AT of the war.
    But thats not right, the most successeful AT gun of WW2 was the Pak 40.
    The 88mm,was used as a multi roled weapon, and was Deadly effective against tanks either.
    But the Pak 40 only purpose, was the AT role, and They ruled supreme until the end of the war.
    And their were half of the weight of the British 17 pounder.

    Using what I know of german, Panzerabwehrkanone (PAK) means CANON that provides DEFENSE against TANKS. I don’t really know how to say it better but here it is:
    Panzer: that has thick armour; it’s and adjective.
    Abwehr: defense.
    Kanone: Canon, what else could it be?
    -The “panzer” could be used in the word PAK meaning that this canon has thick armour, though it is unlikely as the jerries called thanks as Panzers. So panzer in PAK probably means tank.

      CipiRipi00 Back to WW2, look at how the Stuka and IL-2 (and later the P-47 with anti-ground rockets) decimated tanks.

    • @v4enthusiast541
      @v4enthusiast541 5 лет назад

      CipiRipi00 Well put. I still wish to have seen what mass Stukas could have done with air superiority versus tanks, the divebomb techniques of the Stuka were the closest thing they had to pinpoint accuracy... far more precise compared to the P-47 who basically rolled a dice when it came to using their rockets.
