Loved this...I actually remember seeing this on TV when it aired. I had the album and I'd never seen Waits perform. It was amazing! ...And, cos I haven't read ALL the comments - but, wondering if anyone noticed the absolute charm and grace he and the band had when he forgot the second verse: "Make sure they play my theme song / I guess daisies'll have to do...etc" and so did the last verse twice...and still KILLED IT! Love love love Tom Waits. Cheers
It's awesome how he changed his persona on TV in only three years. I've watched his '83 interview with Letterman and it's pretty different. Glad he changed.
Woah, the intro of this segment was used in a song by an Artist named "Mod Sun", the song is called "Tie Dye The Night". I used to listen to that song constantly, and then just stumbled upon this beauty!! What are the odds??!! So awesome. Love Waits.
+ Constantine Karzis: Mate, in fact I believe the lines are " Make sure they play my theme song / I Guess this'll have to do" More Waits variations always welcome tho :D
Umm, yeah. But don't cut Letterman. He is also a genius. Tom will punch you in the ear. David Letterman and Tom Waits have a very strong and loving relationship. Why do you think Tom Waits wrote "One Last Look", ma'am?
They just don't have these kinds of people on talk shows anymore. No one is interesting and take every question asked so seriously. Don't get me wrong, I respect Ellen, but she interviews the dullest, most normal people. I can't really blame her. I blame the lack of interesting people in the music business.
What was that instrument that Letterman had when he was shaking that thing, asking if it reminded Tom of Fairies or put him in a world of Fairies or something like that?? :p
nickbagelboy You asked what was Letterman shaking that reminded him of fairies. Think you'll have to go to a music store that sells ethnic instruments. Although, I hear in San Francisco, to cut down on public urination, a new paint is being used at the Bart stations. It has tiny facets in it that make any spray on it bounce right back. Maybe if that sound was recorded.....
Iconic performance but I never understood why he repeated a verse -- I thought it was a mistake but I've seen the same thing done in other live performances -- maybe it's always a mistake...
Mark Jordan This is just a hunch really, but it would seem to me there was considerable disdain between the two. Probably started in '83, maybe sooner for Tom, both being pushed into something by the powers that be. One being too comfortable in the spotlight, the other being too uncomfortable. The difference in '86 looks as though both were more comfortable with the vibe of it. As time progressed further there became an understanding between the two. In more recent years, I get the feeling they are still messing with each other, just on a more casual/friendly level.
I think it was a bit of a progression. The first time he had Tom on, I think he was a little taken aback by Tom's shyness and overall mannerisms, and as he continued to have him on, learned to accommodate that more.
Late night TV legend, w/ 11 seasons under his belt. Yeah, TERRIBLE interviewer. And I'm sure you've watched EVERY episode, so you'd know, right?...hahaha. Dave had interviewed a shit load of guests up to this show w/ Tom, and he probably met and spoke - either briefly, or in extended conversations or meetings - with more people in any given month during his Late Night years than you will in a decade, or possibly a lifetime, so he can be forgiven for asking a few of the same questions years after a previous interview. Not by you, of course...dipshit.
This is the 12 Tom Waits interview I've watched today. Always been a fan but I didn't realize how funny and charismatic he was in the wild.
always appreciated Dave having Tom Waits on so often.
He has such a quick wit. Love him!
Rain dogs is definitely one of his best albums.
Sometimes genius is an understatement.
"well it's like a big ship... and the water's on fire."
He always makes me think of 1920's German cabaret on acid...nice.
a tip : you can watch movies on flixzone. I've been using them for watching all kinds of movies recently.
@Daxton Jace Yup, I've been using Flixzone for years myself :)
Mushrooms and Pot. Not quite acid.

This man. An American original.
the years between 1983 and 1986, in l.a., were about a decade long. i was lucky enough to be there. and i can almost remember most of it. lol.
It's awesome how he changed his persona on TV in only three years. I've watched his '83 interview with Letterman and it's pretty different. Glad he changed.
they love each other.

nickbagelboy check out Harry Irene by Captain Beefheart. If you like this you'll like that
This is so wonderful I wish I had hair to throw confetti in!!
+ Constantine Karzis:

*****
While I have neither Hair or Confetti - But have given up on wishing.... :D
Probably my favorite Tom album. Too bad I was only 4 when it came out....
It drives me crazy watching people flapping records around while I think, "STOP, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD."
Down By Law, one of my favourite films. Really great, very good acting and shooting.
Thank you for uploading this.
aint he the greatest! love everything he does.
Pure genius.
Such a unique, creative, priceless genius (and I don't mean Letterman!).
Umm, yeah. But don't cut Letterman. He is also a genius. Tom will punch you in the ear. David Letterman and Tom Waits have a very strong and loving relationship. Why do you think Tom Waits wrote "One Last Look", ma'am?
Same here! He is fascinating to listen to.
sometimes amidst the poetry/talking he lets out a soulful note, and it cuts you to the soul. And somehow it's seemless
Everyone at Sonoma Countys dump recognized Tom Waits....
Tom Waits gives mention to Ralph Waite( actor) on " The Nickle" .. Must find out more about this.
comin up on the 28th anniversary of this interview in a couple of days. Damn.
29th now:)
36th now :)

Fretless_ness Check out the Latest Letterman interview with Tom Waits, and his performance, it's pretty sentimental
Ye, Letterman still interviews him from time to time.
Fretless_ness butthole surfer
beautiful genius
I have always though that Shane Macgown & Tom Waites have a lot in common,
I knew they were gonna do Time when they said "Tom is gonna play us out"
holy fuck thats a realistic looking fly. you got me.
Reminds me of Harry Irene by Captain Beefheart
I bet he could scat so gooood!
2-6-86 is one year before my birthday
NY it's like a ship and water is on fire - genius.
If there's one thing I'd like to correct before I go, it would be to fix that ending. A sacrilege.
during the Rain Dogs era huh, what gave that away ;-)
wish it had upright bass
My boy is older than me....
🤣🤣🤣
This is what my demons listen to in a jazz club in hell. In Amsterdam.
wow

sclogse1 Whaaaaat?? lol.
Tinkling. Tinkle....tinkling.
sclogse1 Nice
Agreed out of tune and brilliant . You have to have a voice from god to sound so good with a guitar out of tune .legend
That is why Kurt was so amazing. He made an out of tune guitar sound awesome!
It’s not out of tune if that’s how it goes
Ledger's* .. And no, Mr. Ledger was inspired by Tom Waits to his portrayal of the Joker in TDK
Funny guy
Iconic performance but I never understood why he repeated a verse -- I thought it was a mistake but I've seen the same thing done in other live performances -- maybe it's always a mistake...
Amazing stuff. Our band's lead singer is largely influenced by this music. Check it out if you get a chance. Peace!!
An artist must find his or her own voice to become truly creative and relevant.
;)))
why did the audience laugh randomly at what he was saying?so rude..
You're not really THAT stupid, are you? Sad........
I have to be honest. I am drawn and also unsure.
Ha, Letterman had to look at the album to remember what it was called. He's never given a shit, he still doesn't.
Either they share an agent or Letterman really likes him - he's had him on his show loads of times!
Mark Jordan

You could be right!

Valeskor Alexander David loves Tom. As by now you've figured out.
Letterman asks the exact same questions he asked him in '83. Terrible interviewer.
