How to Catch Gar (Spotted, Longnose and Shortnose)

- Kayak fishing for gar is so much fun! This is the way I rig up to catch the smaller gar species (spotted, longnose and shortnose) I ended catching one gar and hooked several that got away this day. Gar fishing in Texas for alligator gar is a lot bigger challenge, they are a bigger species that require heavier tackle. I love catching these gar from my kayak river fishing, its always so much fun! This is the gar fishing rig and fishing techniques I use most of the time in the fishing the area near me.

Gar fishing is so damn much fun. Many years ago down in the Florida Everglades, I got three nights of Gar fishing in with a SmithWick Devils Horse, and got so many Gar bites, it was crazy. The biggest problem was getting them into the boat before they threw the hook. I had so much fun watching those huge Gar exploding on my top water bait. I hope to return there some day.
That big Gar you caught put some serious muscle in that last move to get free from your hands, Wow.

I caught a small spotted gar today. First gar I’ve ever caught. I can’t imagine the strength of a larger one. Such strong, primitive beasts. It’s no wonder they’ve survived over 60 million years.
@@ReelJedi are the fins sharp? I caught one a lil bigger than this today near Smithville, Tx. It looked a lighter color i think it was a shortnose. Im not from around here so I am not familiar with the fish. I was trying to catch a catfish!

@@ReelJedi what do you think the best line set up would be for those toothy buggers? I was told by some old timers to make some "flies" out of old rope and they catch them because the teeth got stuck in the rope lol
@@DWSOutdoors I use the set up you seen in the video. I've tried the nylon rope fly lure, they don't hit that near as well as live bait.

The rope technique works sometimes for me. Usually when the gar are really active in the dog days of summer. Sometimes not even then. Live bait always works tho

That first fish made me jump
Caught my first gar today! I think it was a short nosed based on google and pictures. I estimate about 2 feet long. I got it to shore, but did not have a net. I did not know how to grab it, then it wiggled around and cut the line before i grabbed his tail. Then he flopped back into the Colorado
That’s exactly how I lost mine today. Hopefully I can catch one next time I’m out!

@@camandtateoutdoors2439 I have come to find that they are not a delicate fish. They can survive along time out of water, provided they are not being cooked in direct sunlight on 100 degree day. Whip up as far as you can on shore. I squeeze from the top, right behind the gills and grab hard. I use my other hand to support the tail. You can also use your foot to control the tail while u get ur hook out, although it helps to have a fishing buddy.
Often the hook is not retrievable, it can be very difficult to open their mouths. People tell me its not a big deal, because the hook will dissolve and not really hurt a gar.

Depends on the current and area sometimes I use a floatee
