I remember those cars. My father had one and I took it for a drive a few times. They have a very unique sound. You could always hear him arrive home reversing it up the very steep driveway in 4wd low range.
They certainly smoke when they are cold. One day an over eager cop saw it smoking as my father left his workplace and ticketed him. He took it to the mechanic and the mechanic laughed and said, "Yeah .It's 2 stroke. Cop is an idiot". In the future he would just drive it around the workplace parking lot a few times before taking it on to the road to let it warm up.
Some cops are just ticket crazy.
It's like the other night I was driving past a well known speed trap area (back road with no street lighting). I had spotted the cop earlier (motorcycle cop) and later on saw him riding along slow looking down (at his on board radar). I was doing about 44 in the 50 zone although just before this somebody had gone past me doing a lot more than 50 (cop didn't see).
Ps Best way to get air flow and probably rid of the smoke is NOT to open the back (sucks it in) but instead *roll up the sides and the back of the canvas*. This gives you sun protection on top but lets the air flow. I'd also be checking for exhaust leaks under the bonnet / exhaust system.

i have bombed a LJ50 engine before you can get them to towards 50hp mark pretty easily with a better carby(motorbike), boysen reeds, exhaust (3 individual pipes), and modern 2 stroke ignition timing, the factory centrifugal weights in the dizzy don't advance the timing much about 6-8 deg from memory,, even with factory carb and exhuast if you advance the base ignition timing from std 8btdc to around 16btdc it will it better performance over all with max advance at around 24btdc which is fine for low rpm they do
