    0:00 Arcade (1986)
    3:21 Amiga (1988)
    5:34 Atari ST (1988)
    7:49 Commodore 64 / C64 (1988)
    10:39 ZX Spectrum (1988)
    13:03 MSX (1989)
    15:59 Amstrad CPC (1989)
    Before the famous beat'em up Double Dragon, Technos Japan developed this galactic shooter for the Arcades that puts you in the skin of Xain, a bounty-hunter who must defeat evil forces who oppress five different planets. The Arcade game was renamed to Solar Warrior in the US and Soldier of Light for the home systems.

    Used to play the Solar Warrior variant of this game at a bowling alley as a kid. I always thought the double jump and ability to crouch and then go prone to be pretty neat touches. Wasn't until I was an adult and learned about emulation that I found out about Xain'D Sleena and the ability to choose what planet you went to, which Solar Warrior did away with.

    Amstrad version looks attractive but then you see how it moves and oh dear!. As a C64 owner back in the day I often saw screen shots of Amstrad games in magazines and was jealous of how nice they looked compared to my ugly C64 version. Then when I saw them move I wasn't so jealous anymore.

      I had a c64 in 1985 then sold it to buy an amstrad. Terrible mistake. I kept it only a few months. What's better with the amstrad is the color palette but that's all. The animation in most games sucks.

    • @carn9507
      @carn9507 3 года назад +1

      Depends on the game. The CPC is quite capable of fast moving sprites and even smooth scrolling. If the coder knows how to use it. Unfortunately back then the CPC was often the last minute jobby after the C64 and Spec ports were complete so often just had the Spectrum code ported over with no optimisation and usually the same graphics (with less colour). Was at least appreciated when games like this one redrew the graphics to make use of the CPC colours though. There were some really great ports though on the CPC. Some far better than the C64 version too. Chase HQ for example. Recent game development on CPC shows what it could have done too. Such as the port of Pinball Dreams by Batman Group (who are CPC experts) which is far closer to the Amiga original than the Spec or C64 could ever attempt. ALso the coder 'Axelay' often makes good shoot 'em ups with smooth scrolling.

    • @carn9507
      @carn9507 3 года назад

      oh and for some reason several notable scrolling beat 'em ups were 2 player on Spec/CPC but 1 player on C64, killing much of the fun (Golden Axe, Hero Turtles 2 etc). Heck, Golden Axe on C64 was 1 player only yet only 1 enemy on screen too while the other two 8-bits had at least a couple enemies in addition to the 2 player modes. So yeah like i said it often depends on the coders of the versions for those machines and how much they actually know about making the most of the very different capabilities of each.

    • @cat29242

      @@carn9507 At the time I was coding. The difference c64 / cpc are not the coders but the time you give them.
      Hardware scrolling($D011 or $D016) + hardware sprites on c64 take just few cycles of cpu,
      versus cpc
      disastrous video memory (second line on screen = 9th lines on memory) and no sprites so all cpu times to try to do scrolling and something look like sprites.
      for music : atari ST=CPC =Spectrum nearly same chipset
      Make a decent game on cpc was a long way and hard work

    The Amiga was more than powerful enought to have an arcade-perfect port. The ZX spectrum and the Commodore 64 versions should be close as well except for the resolution and palette. With some trickery they could've made it smooth too on the ST, MSX and CPC. But it didn't happen. Such a shame.

    Unfortunately, even if I had seen the box in some game shop, the different name would have prevented my putting the two together.

    Bastante malas todas las conversiones.sobre todo la de mi querido amiga 500. Una aberración.yo era muy fan del arcade el cual me lo terminaba en los salones recreativos.

    All ports a bad. Even the Amiga version, which could have been the best port, is poorly designed. A fairly simple arcade game has been stripped of all the fine details that made it a classic and is left on home computers as a tech demo at best, and not a good one.
