That NATO invite can't be extended to a country actively engaged in military hostilities. That's actually part of the rules for NATO or OTAN. That's how things work but if Ukraine can get Russia off their back for a bit then they can get rapidly accepted assuming every country plays along and Hungary or Turkey don't drag their feet.
The US won't play along until there has been peace in that region for a very long time. It is in our interest to avoid a direct military confrontation with a nuclear power if possible.

Mostly it's the US and Germany that aren't keen on Z's plan. Other NATO members have voiced their support for it. Germany blocked the addition of Poland to a high level meeting, probably to not be out numbered in their opposition to the plan.

An invitation is not the same thing as membership, and an invitation can be made conditional on absolutely any number of contingencies. A conditional invitation gives both NATO and Russia potential outs, although obviously they need to be very carefully crafted, to have any hope of ratification.
I am still of the mind that climate change will straighten much of this out.

These are medium to long term objectives seeking support across the board id est:
$$$, direct equipment/material, political/economic/trade arrangements now and in the future.
Obfuscation for both security and to deflect internal political divides are a sine qua non imperative.
Minimising the risk of upheaval is after all a politician's/Government's top priority, staying the course outwardly at least.

Is the water still flowing down through the canals from the Dnieper river to Crimea? Does Putin/Russia still control Crimea? If the answer is yes to both of them, then the Putin/Russia mission is still going as planned.
