I kept a operations and maintenance log on my boat to know when I did things like change filters, ran systems, who was aboard, and where I went. A little effort, but very useful for historic purposes
Goodness, we thought we were chilly in San Diego in December on our boat. You make me grateful to only have to put up with a few evenings in the 40s. Here's to your continued safe passage.
I think it is great to see you cruising in Pacific Northern climates during the winter. You will never forget it. It is a beautiful part of North America and it is part of the adventure! Looking forward to your adventures in warmer climates. Be safe!
Love your channel and adventures. I was a boater in S. FLORIDA. Your challenges because of weather are something we didn’t have to deal with. We just had Hurricanes and Tropical thunderstorms in the summer. Your nordhaven was my future dream boat. Retired and moved to the mountains in N. Georgia instead. Keep up the quality entertainment
Hi folks, I’m a Vancouver islander and I’ve been enjoying your awesome 😎 content. It’s pretty cool 😊 seeing a area like Comox from another point of view. Thank you from Marvin ❤
Funny, you were in my backyard. I had a feeling you would make it up here eventually. Yes we did have some pretty cold weather! The Black Fin Pub is a nice place as well, right in Comox
Nice video as usual. At something like 9.25 in your video you passed an Albin 25 -14k2587 (which is a Sweedish boat and like my first boat back in 1987) - big surprice :) :) Keep going with all these nice "shows" (y)
Welcome to our home! Something tells me you'd rather be sweeping sand from the decks in some far warmer sunny place. I'm sorry we couldn't offer that to you at this time of year. Thanks for the visit!
Thanks for visiting us in Comox. You caught us at a particular cold snap in December by the look of it. Sorry we didn't know you were dropping in for a visit or we would have come down to say hi and introduce ourselves. Oh, the reason the ice is on part of the marina, where these isn't a lot of water flow, is because the marinas are right at the mouth of the Puntledge river so the fresh water lays on top of the salt water and if it's cold enough (like it was during your visit) it will get a skiff of ice. Anyway, great presentation of the marina as well as Comox. Look forward to your next adventure video.
Comox is the home of the major Air Force base on Canada's west coast. Also there is a big Sea Cadet training base there called HMCS Quadra. Many of got our introduction to boating there.
I don't often comment on content but really like your video work. And having gone full circle, shoveling snow as a kid in Utah, then doing my time (ie college years in Wisconsin) where it's freezing winters, I ended up in southern California for work. Bought a boat there and NEVER thought of snow! I recently took her up the coast to the PNW. And i didn't know to expect snow. After years of lows in the 50's at docks in San Pedro It's awesome and weird at the same time to have snow on the decks and docks now! It made me laugh seeing you clear off your decks.Keep up the great content!
Years ago I took a job where I was staying in a crappy little trailer (it only leaked when it rained). In the winter I went down to the hardware store and bought a drafty window kit (clear plastic sheet and double sided tape) and put it over my windows (including the ones that don’t open), making a poor man’s double pane window, and over those roof vents. It was night and day how much warmer it stayed in there, and very noticeable in how much better the furnace could keep up and how much less propane I used for heat.
If you are planning on winter cruising, as it seems you are, I would suggest adding a Dickinson diesel fireplace. We lived about our sailboat in Vancouver for 10 years and that fireplace kept us warm and dry no matter what.
LOVE the PNW - even in the winter! (Couldn't have all that beauty there without the 4 seasons!) Elizabeth, have you tried Trader Joe's Vegetarian Chili?... It's awesome! Thanks for another great video - love seeing new places to visit around the area!
Interesting thing about the heaters on Starlink dishes, when people mount them on the ground they'll sometimes find cats laying in them in the winter. They like the heater mode too and don't care about your internet reception.
A battery powered leaf blower can work well for snow as long as you get to it BEFORE it turns crusty & hard. Makes short work of the issue. Used a gas powered one for years at my NJ house for cars parked outside. The newer battery powered ones are just as good - I have one that’s been used to blow a 1-2 inch dust coating off the driveway and sidewalk. Just get it when the snow is fresh!
I’ve been living on the west coast for years and the climate is changing for sure. We only use to have snow every few years, except for the higher elevations. And it would last for a week or so. And get a portable leaf blower to blow that snow away instead of scraping it. Works faster and is efficient. Hello from Campbell River.
I enjoyed seeing your dogs run in the snow! Ours go crazy when they get to do it. Being in So.Ca.that is not to often. Crazy weather for boating. The views are great!
The snow gets too heavy, blower will touch it if it sits for a while. Not a lot of snow here but when it does it can be very nasty.Had a blizzard that collapsed every green house on the island and shut everything down for a few days.
You two make good videos with good camera angles, commentary, and music, etc. Kudos! PS: I never would have believed there was a palm tree at Comox harbour if you hadn't given actual video evidence of it at the 11:00 mark. And PPS: because of your love of good date bars I must tell you about the most important dessert bar in Canada, and one which you absolutely MUST EXPERIENCE while you're here, the heavenly Nanaimo bar, named after the town of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. :)
We can’t wait for you and Shawn to come visit Derek and I up North in Kitimat 😅😅. It would be fun lol. We can both kayak together in ice! Have some good laughs! The fjords up here are beautiful!! ❤
Burr…….gives me shivers just watching you guys. As usual, great episode. You might want to check out MV Skookum1 video’s as they just posted their trip using their Nordhavn 40 (and kayak as icebreakers) further up the coast in Kitimat. I know they follow you two.
@@mvfreedom -Jennifer’s my daughter on Skookum1. She put me onto you guys about 2 years ago. Perhaps your paths will cross one day in your travels as they plan to live aboard in a couple years. Their boat dog is “Ranger”, named after the Ranger Tug they used to have. Wishing you a happy & safe trip home.
Live near Vancouver & other day had winds that lasted 20 hrs….wind gusts 60 mph! This winter quite typical…mild to cold rain to snow sometimes high winds… Keep eyes sharp when your dogs go on their run across park..many places coyotes are about…yes even in day or night and found in populated areas that have bush / tree area where they can den. Many stories of small dogs and cats eaten. Like you guys positive attitude ! God bless.
I have recently found your channel and I am trying to understand what is that I like so much about it. Maybe the presentation of the video content that is really superb, maybe the incredible nature grounds and waters where you are cruising, maybe the humor and the great chemistry between you two. I can not tell. You see I am an owner of a sailboat and I never thought I would follow a motorboat channel. But I am not just intrigued, I am hooked. Maybe simply because Juan de Fula was a Greek guy...
Couple of suggestions Guys. 1. Start at the top and work down. 2. Come to Australia and tour the Great Barrier Reef instead. Just think of the space (and money) you would save on not having all that cold weather gear. Swap your snow goggles and scarves for sun glasses and bathing suits, LOL. Keep up the great and informative works please Guys:)
Gees I'd like to go fishing too! But I'd have to brake out the chainsaw, put on a 5' bar just to cut the ice, then there's gettin the boat in the water, what a chore.....lol
I realize that cruising in the winter when there are fewer yachts to contend with and it can be peaceful, but I think that all that snow would make most of us head south. Think of how much happier Mr. Sully and Miss Martha would be running around on a warm sunny beach. My wife watched the video and said,...." NO WAY.......Our cruising is going to be in the tropics". She is from the Philippines. Snow or not, your videos are fun to watch.
Another appliance they'd have to pack around in their small boat for use 3 or 4 days a year. The snow in the PNW is normally wet and heavy so an electric blower is useless anyway. This snow looks light and fluffy due to the cold snap, but it's normally not.
One word of caution when boating in winter. Most inlets have have streams entering them. This includes many marinas. Fresh water on cold clear and calm nights tends to sit on the surface of the salt and can freeze. Boat close to the streams can get frozen in solid where as boats further out on the fingers might be in enough current to mix up the fresh water with the salt water and reduce the amount of freezing, be the action of tidal currents or winds. Either can happen in the PNW. I have not boated in the PNW in winter, nor ever considered doing it, but my local slip and boat launch is well frozen up but the pier, a thousand feet away and out in open water is entirely ice free where I currently live in Newfoundland. All the local marinas are entirely frozen up and the few that are exposed to wave action have had the fingers pulled out of the water. Boating in winter here, which is very limited, is either for hunting or fishing and is executed from large and heavy open boats on day trips or fishing vessels. On diving, Nanaimo has some fabulous wrecks, a destroyer and a WW2 freighter by snake Island which can be exposed and a very large ocean going tug in the harbour at the north end of the boat channel which is very sheltered and somewhat shallower. The snake Island wrecks are festooned by sea life and entering wither wreck is unnecessary just mind overhangs outside. Some of the best critters can be found well above the main deck like decorated warbonnets and grunt sculpins.
Too bad you weren't able to get in some SCUBA diving. Some of my favorite dives have been off Vancouver Island; and, Jacques Cousteau considered the area one of the worlds best.
You should get one of those rubber coated sledge hammers like you see on Deadliest Catch. Not sure what kind of condition your boat would be in after but you wouldn't have any ice.
Yeah I was iced in at a marina on a river once for 4 months as the ice was several feet thick, when it eventually started to melt my boat just dropped several feet as the water level under it had dropped as the levels were controlled by a sea lock, it was a very strange experience suddenly dropping, 30 tons worth of Oh my God! PS this was in the UK very unusually cold winter quite some time back all due to Mount St Helens.
All these fair weather fans lol If they only knew what they were missing (like a mountain or most other natural landscapes lol). What happens if you do not remove the snow and just wait for it to melt? (in some places) Seems like a lot of work like on the boat deck. My daughter is just north in Campbell River, definitely gods country up there. Thanks for Sunday morning entertainment from California. Hope to meet you on the water some day.
BTW - no guessing about the temperature in various areas. There are battery power Wifi thermometer modules that can easily be added. Put them wherever you want - various online sites have them. Use a phone app to check temps & set alerts, etc.
I’m curious! Back here in the northeast most of the marime’s close down in the winter! Do you not have a difficult time getting fuel, dockage etc because the marinas close down????😢
No our winters typically are rather mild so marinas are open year round. They only close in more touristy spots where there’s simply not enough staff or boats to justify staying open all year.
The weather is not usually this cold in the northwest. Typical winter temperature is more like 40. The marinas and fuel docks are open year-round. There are a lot fewer boats out, so it's fun to go if like having open dock space or peaceful anchorages.
I still remember the crazy snow storm we had last month on the mainland, can't begin to imagine what you must of had to deal with there! That's some freezing alright. Using the heater to defrost the hatch, it works! 😄
You two are intrepid cruisers. Nobody else around but you made it work. The sight of snowy mountains is sometimes worth the price. Winter covers are great-how about something in a bright green, perhaps? Courtney/Comox is a prime retirement location and for boaters, is very central to everything. Brushing snow off the boat is never fun; did I catch sight of a piece of teak on that segment? Thanks for bringing this episode to us; I look forward to Silva Bay.

Scuba diving on the island is better in the winter as there is less pollon and algea blooms. Also the water temp is the same winter or summer, so dive right in.

Not sure when this was but here on Vancouver Island (Comox) we've had no snow since January 4. Or frost for that matter.
Supposed to get frosty next few days however!
That was Dec 20th
