I love how during the verses it sounds edgy, dark, brutish, all the above. But during the chorus it sounds sadder and more tragic. Like a glimps of character development infinite could’ve gotten instead of what we got.
Infinite seemed like a good character at first but then you play Shadow's story where you find out that he's just some pissed off kid who had a temper tantrum because the other emo kid called him a name. Btw nice profile pic.
I feel for Infinite, he is like Mephiles. They both got their butts kicked by Shadow, I think both of them still have amazing potential, I wouldn't mind at all to see them both again. Infinite's song is pretty tragic because he wanted to be strong, when reality struck him he felt lost immediately. "Edgelord" or not him, Mephiles, and Shadow all deserve much better. Shadow had a dark past, Mephiles was into power because he lost his counterpart, Iblis, and was filled with rage, and Infinite has a bruised ego after believing he could conquer all. Honestly? People paint it as stupid but imo I feel it was a badly executed idea. Infinite clearly had an inferiority complex, Shadow tapped into it and infinite couldn't tolerate the idea of not only finding someone stronger but also getting mocked because of it, all it takes for someone like that is one bad scenario to grow huge amounts of resentment and jealousy that can lead up to horrible actions (some people get humbled, others enter a void of self hatred) Infinite's motives weren't stupid, just executed badly thanks to Sonic team's awful writing for this game and overall bad decisions.
I think they should've made it to where Infinite was kidnapped by Eggman and forcefully taken on the power of the Phantom Ruby. And the Ruby tortures his mind and keeps him in his state of evil along with Eggman brainwashing him. That could set the stage for a second forces where everyone tries to save Infinite from the imprisonment of the Phantom Ruby.
No I mean like they made a dark side of the story like in Sonic Adventure 2 where we play as the bad guys like Zero/Infinite, Eggman, Metal Sonic, and Zavok.

He can't actually mess with reality. He messes with people's *perception* of reality, aka he fucks with their senses. It's like the Reality Stone, from Marvel. It does have SOME reality warping abilities, but they are mostly to do with Null Space and creating the Hardlight Illusion Clones.

Yeah, there was so much they could have done with Forces' story. No decent explanation for Infinite's origins and motivations (even the prequel comic didn't offer much), plus the game should have had a montage or something showing Dr. Eggman's conquest of the world with Infinite's theme playing over it. That would have been sweet!
Honestly, I think that a more comedic version of Infinite could work in a Sonic Boom- type TV show. Like, he's a guy who tries way too hard to look cool and intimidating, and in the process, he makes himself look like a total goofball. For instance: "Family. Just another illusion. All you can do is look out for yourself." (Infinite gets a phone call.) "Oh, uh....a call from my allies in darkness! (Turns away from the heroes, in a frustrated whisper) Mom, come on! That actually does sound funny. Though now that we Ian Flynn worked on Frontiers and pretty much set the standards of how Sonic characters should be written, if they brought back Infinite again with Ian Flynn taking care of the writing, I am positive he could actually make him an actually interesting character.

I honestly think that describes Infinite in a nutshell. Everything about this character seems meant to take every overused/negative stereotype of Sonic fandom OCs and put them into one character. The whole character design is played so over the top that it just works.

I don't see it, Silver was a good guy, which meant he would most likely return for future games. I find Infinite similar to Mephiles; an edgelord bad guy who doesn't at any point side with the good guys (unlike a certain other edgelord) meaning he doesn't have a reason to come back unless they decide to use him for crossover or fighting games if they ever produce any. Not to mention that Eggman is the staple villain and everything comes back to him anyway. There is a chance he'll come back though, but only because people find him hilariously edgy and make memes about him. Judging by what they added into Sonic Forces (Sanic shirt) it's far more likely than any other reason.

Think how much cooler it would have been if Infinite used his power to infiltrate the Resistance. The player wouldn't have been able to tell which friends were real and which one were impostors. One of the big reveals could have been one of the pillars of the Resistance (such as Knuckles) being a Phantom Ruby copy all along, causing them to fail in a crucial moment. That would have been such a cool use for the character. But no. All we get is a few rehashed villains as copies, half of which are defeated in cutscenes.
That would have required a lot more thinking on Sega's part, and a much longer development time. Unfortunately, they don't seem to think 3D Sonic games through very often.
It would of been cool if we got boss fights for each of the copies including some more things like for example when the shadow copy goes to attack sonic and shadow interjects we could of played as him against the shadow copy and as the fight goes on he gets flashbacks to the shadow androids which lead to flashbacks involving black doom mephiles and eventually Maria but we notice each of these have a phantom tint to it shadow realizing this knows it’s not real and breaks through and we get a cutscene where he defeats the shadow copy The chaos fights first half could involve tails fighting chaos while having flashbacks to adventure and the second half involves playing as classic sonic
I really feel like Forces has taken a ton of really good concepts but executed them in a sub-par manner. The aspect of the story that falls most harshly to this boring writing is the villain. Infinite had so much potential, a great design and an interesting air about him, and if they fleshed out his backstory and gave him a reason and motivation besides supposedly being “weak” he could even have been a character that could be sympathized with. I honestly think if they emphasized the loss of his squad and gave him a sort of revenge complex for what was basically his family being taken from him he would have a good motivation and backstory. And imagine if instead of being just the source of his power, the phantom ruby slowly corrupted him more and more until he completely lost even that motivation and turned into a mindless, angry killing machine that fell victim to his own all consuming revenge. I honestly think about Infinite a lot, they did him dirty even in his first appearance. I have too many projects but each time I find myself listening to this song I really can’t help but think about doing a complete rewrite of Forces and changing a lot of major things just to see how great the story could have been. War always makes for compelling narratives, and it never leaves anything unscathed. Perhaps the general disappointment in this narrative stems from all of these dramatic events occurring and characters only being marginally affected. I honestly think if SEGA wasn’t ready to have a truly dark story and had to pull their punches, a war of this immense scale likely wasn’t the best idea. Could’ve been great, if they took their good ideas and actually ran with them. Thanks for listening to my rant if you got this far hahaha
I’ve thought about rewriting Sonic Forces too (give Sonic some PTSD, make infinite more interesting, etc) so you’re not the only one lol Also giving the avatar a more meaningful part in the story. I love the idea of Infinite being on a revenge quest and getting corrupted by the Phantom Ruby. It’d be interesting because the avatar also uses a phantom ruby so I think it’d be fascinating to see your own character have to resist the same corruption

I mean, a villain motivated by insecurity really isn't anything new in fiction. I think real issue, that people don't want acknowledge, with infnite is that he looses a lot.
The way u described the sub par manner of the way forces was executed just reminds me of my rant about dragon ball gt. So many amazing ideas and concepts on paper but the execution just made it hated by a lot of the community
Considering he was a slightly above average individual in his universe, he got kicked in the face by someone with leg strength comparable to Sonic... He shouldn't have survived. Also, Episode Shadow doesn't even give all the information, and MANY people seem to forget it implied Shadow brutally murdered his entire squad of soldiers. In real life small squads of soldiers tend to bond extremely extensively and would risk their lives for each other, that fact alone would mean that 'Infinite' (Not even his Real name fyi) literally lost all of his friends to Shadow, one of Sonic's Friends/Rivals just because they'd run out of luck on this one job. If anything, he had a right to be this angry with Shadow, and Eggman capitalized on his hunger for the power to level Shadow by offering the Phantom Ruby. The only catch was that 'Infinite' would have to help him defeat Sonic for that power, hence why he was submitting to the fatso. He was actually somewhat honorable by upholding his end of the deal unlike a lot of other things Eggman has gotten involved with. That was probably part of the reason he almost won in Forces. Their arrogance was the only reason they actually lost in the end.
BTW, they were not a patriotic platoon, they were mercenaries, who emphasize emotional detachment, since they rotate team mates quite often and are in the fight for selfish reasons.
@@faded9581, the problem with your argument is that if Infinite had not cared about his squad, he wouldn't have convinced them to work for Eggman alongside him. He'd have simply killed them himself, to test his new powers.

I think this song works brilliantly for Infinite. It's full of overconfidence, asserting himself as the best. That's basically his story, he's a competent guy with a massive ego. When he gets his ass beat, he refuses to accept it and his ego pushes him to seek superior power as a way to overcome his failure. So that he alone is the strongest. It contrasts with the rookie, who gets a beatdown by Infinite, but instead of being consumed by his failure, he recognises his limitations and seeks help from others. In the end, it's revealed that the Phantom Ruby controls illusions, Infinite was deluding himself the whole time and even his alliance with Eggman was an illusion. His ego and confidence controlled him and it drives this song too.

Except we never actually see Infinite die. Instead, we see him get *absorbed* into the Phantom Ruby, which flies off into the distance. This implies that Infinite may be able to make a comeback, in another game, because he wasn't actually destroyed, just defeated and humbled.

Honestly hope that Sonic Team uses Infinite again in the next Sonic game. It would be great to expand off of what they tried to do with him, and actually give him more CHARACTER and MOTIVATION. That’s what I hope at least, I’ve always liked his design.

Infinite is honestly a pretty genius character. He's a typical edgelord villain...AND THAT'S THE POINT. His character explores the entire concept and what turns someone into that, and how sad and lonely that would make someone. This song isn't just him boasting, it's him trying to convince himself that he's actually as powerful as he claims he is. But deep down he knows he's pathetic. His power is artificial, and he lacks the ability to use it to even a fraction of its real potential; this is why the main thing Infinite does is make clones of older Sonic villains (including the guy who kicked his ass). And in the end? Eggman throws him aside, takes the Phantom Ruby, and instantly becomes infinitely (pun intended) more dangerous than Infinite ever was with it. Then the poor jackal gets discarded like a failed robot. In the end, Infinite is no different than a Motobug or a Buzzbomber; he's served his purpose, and now he's been discontinued.
They really did, I was disappointing by the backstory they gave him, but there's nothing we can do now.... except fanfics because that's a thing. I liked the theories about Infinite far more than his actual story (I don't hate Infinite, not at all, his concept is cool)
Dragon Lich Queen I️ mean if you look more into it the backstory can be summarized as this ‘Infinite is a mercenary who’s only family is his squad of jackals he leads, they are very close and would die to save another, while raiding eggmans base he realized his squad was captured and would be killed unless he joined eggman, he decided he would help eggman and they were assigned a mission to stop shadow who broke into the base, his squad attempted to stop him but were all killed by shadow with infinite trying to contact them before realizing their fates...enraged he goes to fight shadow on his own no back up from the egg pawns or any other machines just to avenge his friends, shadow seeing him dodged his attack and nearly killed him leaving him with nothing but insanity and one desire, to destroy anything in his way of defeating shadow, everything he knew has come and gone and only scars remain of who he was, there was nothing left to carry on and his pain persisted until eggman showed him the phantom ruby he couldn’t resist its power and became infinite forgetting his past forgetting who he once was with the only thing keeping him going was the idea that he could finally seek vengeance on shadow’ yea I️ looked way to into the lore

When this song first got released I thought it was hilarious and couldn't stop laughing out of bewildered disbelief cause I couldn't believe they actually went this far with it, I honestly respected them for going so hard into the "edgy" angle for this song. This song is still my favourite villain theme in any media to date. This is what I get when I hear this song. Infinite is a mercenary humiliated by Shadow, and now has become a monster blinded by power, bloodshed and vengeance. He went through hell to get the power he has, nearly insane from the constant pain he is in. He will not stop until he destroys everyone sonic and his friends ever knew, and then he will kill them. I imagine being in the final boss fight that will never be, between super Sonic and a fully powered Infinite (Phantom Infinite). Infinite has pulled everyone into null space. Sonic has to break the phantom ruby before Infinite traps them in forever. That is why some of the lines in this song refer to “This is an illusion, open up you eyes and...” “Look around you and tell me what you really see”, implying that this is a world where Infinite holds all the cards and can control everything. I regret the lost potential Infinite could have brought.
This is now up there for me with ‘Alicorn’ from Ace Combat 7 (Captain Torres of the Submarine Alicorn wants to nuke 1 million people to end a war) and ‘Collective Conscious’ from MGRR (literally just media bad but it goes fucking hard)
Came back here to compare this because of “Find Your Flame” being somewhat similar. They have similar lyrics in some parts, but it’s as if find your flame has the opposite tone of this, because it’s more uplifting.

I love how during the verses it sounds edgy, dark, brutish, all the above. But during the chorus it sounds sadder and more tragic. Like a glimps of character development infinite could’ve gotten instead of what we got.
Infinite seemed like a good character at first but then you play Shadow's story where you find out that he's just some pissed off kid who had a temper tantrum because the other emo kid called him a name.

I feel for Infinite, he is like Mephiles. They both got their butts kicked by Shadow, I think both of them still have amazing potential, I wouldn't mind at all to see them both again. Infinite's song is pretty tragic because he wanted to be strong, when reality struck him he felt lost immediately. "Edgelord" or not him, Mephiles, and Shadow all deserve much better. Shadow had a dark past, Mephiles was into power because he lost his counterpart, Iblis, and was filled with rage, and Infinite has a bruised ego after believing he could conquer all. That's just me though

Honestly? People paint it as stupid but imo I feel it was a badly executed idea. Infinite clearly had an inferiority complex, Shadow tapped into it and infinite couldn't tolerate the idea of not only finding someone stronger but also getting mocked because of it, all it takes for someone like that is one bad scenario to grow huge amounts of resentment and jealousy that can lead up to horrible actions (some people get humbled, others enter a void of self hatred)
Infinite's motives weren't stupid, just executed badly thanks to Sonic team's awful writing for this game and overall bad decisions.
I think they should've made it to where Infinite was kidnapped by Eggman and forcefully taken on the power of the Phantom Ruby. And the Ruby tortures his mind and keeps him in his state of evil along with Eggman brainwashing him. That could set the stage for a second forces where everyone tries to save Infinite from the imprisonment of the Phantom Ruby.

I don't see it, Silver was a good guy, which meant he would most likely return for future games. I find Infinite similar to Mephiles; an edgelord bad guy who doesn't at any point side with the good guys (unlike a certain other edgelord) meaning he doesn't have a reason to come back unless they decide to use him for crossover or fighting games if they ever produce any. Not to mention that Eggman is the staple villain and everything comes back to him anyway.
There is a chance he'll come back though, but only because people find him hilariously edgy and make memes about him. Judging by what they added into Sonic Forces (Sanic shirt) it's far more likely than any other reason.

He and his team got their as skilled by Shadow, and considering how Shadow is, and who he works for? His team is likely alive, albeit maybe captured. Eh.. What is spin-off-
Think how much cooler it would have been if Infinite used his power to infiltrate the Resistance. The player wouldn't have been able to tell which friends were real and which one were impostors. One of the big reveals could have been one of the pillars of the Resistance (such as Knuckles) being a Phantom Ruby copy all along, causing them to fail in a crucial moment. That would have been such a cool use for the character. But no. All we get is a few rehashed villains as copies, half of which are defeated in cutscenes.
That would have required a lot more thinking on Sega's part, and a much longer development time. Unfortunately, they don't seem to think 3D Sonic games through very often.

It would of been cool if we got boss fights for each of the copies including some more things like for example when the shadow copy goes to attack sonic and shadow interjects we could of played as him against the shadow copy and as the fight goes on he gets flashbacks to the shadow androids which lead to flashbacks involving black doom mephiles and eventually Maria but we notice each of these have a phantom tint to it shadow realizing this knows it’s not real and breaks through and we get a cutscene where he defeats the shadow copy
The chaos fights first half could involve tails fighting chaos while having flashbacks to adventure and the second half involves playing as classic sonic
I really feel like Forces has taken a ton of really good concepts but executed them in a sub-par manner. The aspect of the story that falls most harshly to this boring writing is the villain. Infinite had so much potential, a great design and an interesting air about him, and if they fleshed out his backstory and gave him a reason and motivation besides supposedly being “weak” he could even have been a character that could be sympathized with. I honestly think if they emphasized the loss of his squad and gave him a sort of revenge complex for what was basically his family being taken from him he would have a good motivation and backstory. And imagine if instead of being just the source of his power, the phantom ruby slowly corrupted him more and more until he completely lost even that motivation and turned into a mindless, angry killing machine that fell victim to his own all consuming revenge. I honestly think about Infinite a lot, they did him dirty even in his first appearance.
I have too many projects but each time I find myself listening to this song I really can’t help but think about doing a complete rewrite of Forces and changing a lot of major things just to see how great the story could have been. War always makes for compelling narratives, and it never leaves anything unscathed. Perhaps the general disappointment in this narrative stems from all of these dramatic events occurring and characters only being marginally affected. I honestly think if SEGA wasn’t ready to have a truly dark story and had to pull their punches, a war of this immense scale likely wasn’t the best idea.
Could’ve been great, if they took their good ideas and actually ran with them.

Also giving the avatar a more meaningful part in the story. I love the idea of Infinite being on a revenge quest and getting corrupted by the Phantom Ruby. It’d be interesting because the avatar also uses a phantom ruby so I think it’d be fascinating to see your own character have to resist the same corruption

I mean, a villain motivated by insecurity really isn't anything new in fiction. I think real issue, that people don't want acknowledge, with infnite is that he looses a lot.
The way u described the sub par manner of the way forces was executed just reminds me of my rant about dragon ball gt. So many amazing ideas and concepts on paper but the execution just made it hated by a lot of the community

Considering he was a slightly above average individual in his universe, he got kicked in the face by someone with leg strength comparable to Sonic... He shouldn't have survived.
Also, Episode Shadow doesn't even give all the information, and MANY people seem to forget it implied Shadow brutally murdered his entire squad of soldiers.
In real life small squads of soldiers tend to bond extremely extensively and would risk their lives for each other, that fact alone would mean that 'Infinite' (Not even his Real name fyi) literally lost all of his friends to Shadow, one of Sonic's Friends/Rivals just because they'd run out of luck on this one job.
If anything, he had a right to be this angry with Shadow, and Eggman capitalized on his hunger for the power to level Shadow by offering the Phantom Ruby. The only catch was that 'Infinite' would have to help him defeat Sonic for that power, hence why he was submitting to the fatso. He was actually somewhat honorable by upholding his end of the deal unlike a lot of other things Eggman has gotten involved with.
That was probably part of the reason he almost won in Forces. Their arrogance was the only reason they actually lost in the end.

I think this song works brilliantly for Infinite. It's full of overconfidence, asserting himself as the best.
That's basically his story, he's a competent guy with a massive ego. When he gets his ass beat, he refuses to accept it and his ego pushes him to seek superior power as a way to overcome his failure. So that he alone is the strongest.
It contrasts with the rookie, who gets a beatdown by Infinite, but instead of being consumed by his failure, he recognises his limitations and seeks help from others.
In the end, it's revealed that the Phantom Ruby controls illusions, Infinite was deluding himself the whole time and even his alliance with Eggman was an illusion.
His ego and confidence controlled him and it drives this song too.

Infinite is honestly a pretty genius character.
He's a typical edgelord villain...AND THAT'S THE POINT. His character explores the entire concept and what turns someone into that, and how sad and lonely that would make someone. This song isn't just him boasting, it's him trying to convince himself that he's actually as powerful as he claims he is. But deep down he knows he's pathetic. His power is artificial, and he lacks the ability to use it to even a fraction of its real potential; this is why the main thing Infinite does is make clones of older Sonic villains (including the guy who kicked his ass).
And in the end? Eggman throws him aside, takes the Phantom Ruby, and instantly becomes infinitely (pun intended) more dangerous than Infinite ever was with it. Then the poor jackal gets discarded like a failed robot. In the end, Infinite is no different than a Motobug or a Buzzbomber; he's served his purpose, and now he's been discontinued.
If only they fleshed him out more

As edgy as this song is, it’s pretty profound in some aspects. I just wish the character Infinite did the lyrics of this song justice.
This song is still my favourite villain theme in any media to date. This is what I get when I hear this song.
Infinite is a mercenary humiliated by Shadow, and now has become a monster blinded by power, bloodshed and vengeance. He went through hell to get the power he has, nearly insane from the constant pain he is in.
He will not stop until he destroys everyone sonic and his friends ever knew, and then he will kill them.
I imagine being in the final boss fight that will never be, between super Sonic and a fully powered Infinite (Phantom Infinite). Infinite has pulled everyone into null space. Sonic has to break the phantom ruby before Infinite traps them in forever.
That is why some of the lines in this song refer to “This is an illusion, open up you eyes and...” “Look around you and tell me what you really see”, implying that this is a world where Infinite holds all the cards and can control everything.
I regret the lost potential Infinite could have brought.
This is now up there for me with ‘Alicorn’ from Ace Combat 7 (Captain Torres of the Submarine Alicorn wants to nuke 1 million people to end a war) and ‘Collective Conscious’ from MGRR (literally just media bad but it goes fucking hard)
We need Hyper Sonic not Super Sonic. But none of them take damage though. But Still!

Came back here to compare this because of “Find Your Flame” being somewhat similar. They have similar lyrics in some parts, but it’s as if find your flame has the opposite tone of this, because it’s more uplifting.

Infinite had so much potential man, his backstory could had been way better than we got and he could been more stronger in sonic forces...

Bro he could’ve had lots of potential, and a good backstory that isn’t “I got scars from Shadow and now I’m emo.” He could’ve solo’d the Sonic cast. He murdered like 4 people and spared the Rookie. He only died to plot armor and horrible storylines
