    Babymetal is an experimental metal band. They integrate everything from electronic to rap into their metal structure, and they've been quite successful. I personally consider them a "metal theater" band because their concerts are wild participation-type concerts, not just "watch me sing" types. They have a few ballads you might like to review voice wise, but most of their live performances are pure "holy fuck" type of experiences.

    Great first song to react to. The singer, Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-metal) was 16 at this performance in 2014 at the Budokan, but she's been in the entertainment industry since she was a small child. First as a child model, attended an acting school, joined a three girl J-Pop group at age 10, and finally was a founding member of a J-Pop group called Sakura Gakuin that has a school concept that had different clubs the girls could join. One of those clubs was a metal club called Babymetal. She was 12 at the time, and the Babymetal was formed around her, due to her singing abilities and stage presence. Now 10 years later, Su is a lovely young women about to turn 23 this December, and Babymetal is still going strong.

    • @Shoe-metal
      @Shoe-metal 3 года назад +24

      Just a minor correction, she attended "Actor's School Hiroshima" but not for acting, she was there (on a scholarship) to sing. In fact there are videos online of little Suzuka performing on stage at ASH. She entered ASH in 2006 (age 8 until December 20th) and performed at most of their semi-annual public recitals through 2011 (age 13).

      Yes, definitely a good first choice. I think anyone with a vocal coaching background will be recommended different things from the usual Gimmie, Karate, RoR path.
      (Although maybe at least two of those are worth a look too?)
      I struggle to suggest recommendations simply because the band is so diverse.
      But Rhondo of Nightmare (plus the intro, as it seems he likes the non-vocal bits too, and that into is mind blowing) is probably where I'd suggest to go next.

  • @ANDOR-

    Great analysis, probably the most thorough and best I've seen so far from a vocal standpoint.
    You mentioned her reaching for the lower notes, she said a few years ago that these always gave her problems and Akatsuki was her most challenging song the first few Babymetal years. And there's a rather new interview from last year where she talks about the fact she now has a much easier time to sing these lower notes because of her more matured voice.
    Babymetal was actually formed in 2010, when she was 12, around her voice and her ability to cut through the super loud metal music behind her. When the three Babymetal girls met with the band (they're called Kami Band, Kami means god or god-like spirit) the first time, a band member asked their producer if they should play a little bit quieter... the answer was to "play as loud and hard as they can". The band was pretty surprised that she had no issues whatsoever to sing over the music, especially at her age.
    Black Night was the name of the second of the back-to-back Budokan concerts in 2014 (the first night was called Red Night). Akatsuki means something like "Daybreak". But if you take the word apart it means Aka (Red), tsuki (moon). Japanese is a LITTLE BIT complicated.
    Akatsuki is one of 4 Su-metal solo songs on the first two albums, but Babymetal were at this point in time of the video (March 2014) three girls, Suzuka Nakamoto, Su-metal, lead singer you see in the video (born Dec 1997), Moa Kikuchi, Moametal, backup vocals and dance (born Jul 1999) and Yui Mizuno, Yuimetal, backup vocals and dance (born Jun 1999). Yui went on hiatus at the end of 2017 and eventually left in 2018, so it's only Su and Moa now. They had their official 10 year anniversary last weekend.

    ⚡ / 🔴 🌙
    Guitarists that night were Leda Cygnus and Takayoshi Ohmura.
    As usual BOH was on bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums.
    Su doesn't need to fear any of the pyrotechnics because she is made of fire. : )
    That solo (and Rondo of Nightmare from the same concert) are what sold me on BABYMETAL.
    Before that I liked them, and thought the whole idea was a lot of fun, but seeing Su in full Metal Queen mode turned me into a diehard fan.
    An interesting thing about 'Akatsuki'.
    It's written by combining "Red" and "Moon".
    Which helps explain the red moon imagery BABYMETAL uses in many of their concerts.
    On the track listing the character "Kurenai" (often translated as a deep red or crimson) is used instead of "Red" as a tribute to the X-Japan song of that name.

    • @otobokegaijin6218
      @otobokegaijin6218 3 года назад

      In Japanese writing the kanji character for "kurenai" can be and is used for "red" regardless of any reference to X Japan's song of that title. "Kurenai" is not used "instead" of "red" - it IS "red". In classical Japanese literature it's the go-to character for "red". There are several verses in the original Babymetal "Akatsuki" lyrics that make direct or oblique reference to classical Japanese literature.

    Excellent reaction and analysis - and welcome to the BABYMETAL galaxy. As others have said, no BABYMETAL are not 'typical' of Japanese metal, especially vocally - but they are not typical for anywhere, they really are that rare thing, something new and unique but also pure quality in everything from the song writing to every aspect of the performance.
    I hope you follow up on some of the suggestions for more BABYMETAL songs, every one of them is different and you will have so many different aspects to analyse in each one.

    It's easy to forget that Su was only SIXTEEN years old in this video! And they are at the world famous Budokan arena, where you have to be invited to perform there. The Beatles, Cheap Trick, and Bob Dylan have performed there too. This is one of my most favorite BABYMETAL songs and performances.
    It is the most bad @ss yet touching songs I have ever heard:
    "Going over thousands of nights,
    some love shall survive.
    So, until my body perishes,
    until my life disappears,
    I shall keep on cherishing this love."

    • @Shoe-metal
      @Shoe-metal 3 года назад +3

      The Budokan is prestigious and many developing artists in Japan hold out playing Budokan as their goal - that certainly was the case for Babymetal at the time - but I don't believe the "invitation only" idea is accurate.

    This group is interesting in that it’s actually three girls but the focus is around Su ( the girl here) vocals.
    Like this group basically invented a new metal genre around themselves and it’s because of Su.
    Interesting fact about Su is she may have Synethesia because interviews she strongly relates notes to colors to notes and is the main way she can describe her own singing

  • @rakuonmusic
    @rakuonmusic 3 года назад +45

    Yo talk about Su-METAL's voice's purity and I cannot but agree. She is not of those vocalists who use and abuse "techniques such as portamento and vibrato, singing straight, on the note. The first time I heard Su, her vocalisation reminded me that of Annie Haslam, although Annie is no "power vocal".

    • @Shoe-metal
      @Shoe-metal 3 года назад +5

      I was a huge fan of Renaissance and Annie Haslam's voice. Su-metal doesn't have that remarkable range, but to my untrained ear they share a pure clarity of tone.

I think the quality of her voic came evident to the ears of the public in 2012-13 with the release of Hedbangeeer, IDZ and Megitsune. The earlier songs still had much of what one may call a "cute, idolish style"

  • @Jordan-Ramses
    @Jordan-Ramses 3 года назад +54

    Babymetal is not typical anywhere. They invented their own genre of music that they got to name because nobody knew what to call them. They called it 'kawaii metal' which means 'cute' but also the cultural revolution of cuteness that happened in Japan. So kawaii also has connotations of rebellion and doing things a different way. This is sort of a not typical song but a lot of their songs are not typical. Most have 3 girls with full dance choreography. But Su sings much better of course when she doesn't have to dance. So this is a good song to recommend for this purpose.
    I also think that Su is not typical of Japanese singers. She sings very simply and straightforward and most of them are the opposite, some well past the point of what i could consider being cheesy. You add that to Japanese vocal melodies which are like crack cocaine and it's all too much if you're not used to it. In my opinion that is why Japanese music is usually never popular outside Japan. But it is very good IMO, but it's so different and extreme from a western perspective.

    Awesome. Babymetal actually consists of 2-3 girls. This was a Su-metal solo, back when this was recorded the other 2 girls would take a break while Su did her thing and then the other 2, known as Black Babymetal, would have their own songs to give Su a break. One of the 2 other girls, Yuimetal, left due to health reasons and hasn't been permanently replaced. So now Babymetal consists of Su-metal and Moametal and one of 3 girls, know as the Avengers, taking turns to fill the third spot, but not singing.
    If you want to see a Su solo again try Rondo of Nightmare, where you can see more of the band, known as the Kami band. ruclips.net/video/8WBDiLMNZcE/видео.html

    Suzuka's voice is a needle sharped so thin that pierces the metal on the background to stand in front. She is also an incredible performer, because she was trained as an actress not a singer. That bald bassman is Boh, a fucking genius. Part of Babymetal's success is because in the Kami Band, the musicians in the background, everyone is so talented. The producer of the band, Kobametal, managed to assemble some of the best metal scene musicians in Japan to play for the girls.
    You might get misguided because of Akatsuki, but Babymetal is in truth three girls, Suzuka is just the lead singer and two dancers accompany her. But they have some solo songs so they can take a rest after all the 120% energy dancing. If you are curious to see them I think the best song to meet them would be Megitsune: ruclips.net/video/cK3NMZAUKGw/видео.html

    Nice reaction video, I love seeing the technical aspects of BABYMETAL performances, because there are so much to talk about. And you come in a great time, we are celebrating 10 years anniversary of BABYMETAL this month.
    This was a solo performance of a once trio, a vocal and 2 dancers (now they're just 2 of them). Since we're discussing the vocal, it's a good choice already. Other older solo performance examples are: Rondo of Nightmare (has unique timing), No Rain No Rainbow (ballad), Amore (similar to Akatsuki), From Dusk Til Dawn (very high pitch).
    There also some unique style of singing technique shown off in their latest album such as: Shanti Shanti Shanti (Indian), BxMxC (Rap, new mv available), Brand New Day (R&B), Night Night Burn (Spanish/Latin), Oh Majinai (European Folks), and what I think the hardest to sing is Shine.
    Other epic must watch performance examples are: Ijime Dame Zettai, Headbangerrr...!!!, Road of Resistance, PA PA YA!!, The ONE, and many others.
    You can find most of their audio in digital platform. Their music video however is a bit hard to react to, since their label is very strict about copyright. But you can still try react to their mv from official BABYMETAL site.

    BABYMETAL is definitely not typical Japanese Metal, they are very unique in Japan as well. „Kawaii“ means cute, and their music is a fusion of Metal and Japanese Pop music that you might know from idol groups (although there‘s not that much of a Pop element in this particular song). Su‘s outfit shows both influences as well, perhaps that‘s one of the reasons why you get that adolescent vibe (another being that she is indeed 16 here).
    I‘m glad that Su gets some recognition from a professional. I have always felt just like you said, her voice sits nicely on the Metal foundation, and she always cuts through perfectly. It gets even more fascinating when you see other songs where she is following more of a dance choreography while singing, yet you barely ever hear her voice waver.
    If you‘d like to hear what she sounds like today (six years later), I‘d like to recommend a song called „Shanti Shanti Shanti“. I think you might find that one interesting from a vocal standpoint as well. ruclips.net/video/gQnG_T7kbtY/видео.html

    Thank you for this reaction ! This is a very good Babymetal reaction, maybe the best because you picked out what makes Suzuka/Su-metal style of singing and music combination so unique.
    Most regular reactors obviously wouldn't be able to talk about such things and a bunch of vocal coaches, I think, might have been a bit surprised by Babymetal and never went into detail like you did.
    Akatsuki means something like 'crimson moon'. The Black Night is the name of the night it was performed because it was 2 nights in a row at the same venue, but different setlist.
    11:45 "that was an experience" imagine something like that, but maybe even more high energy for 1+ hour, than you get some idea what a Babymetal show is like. :-)
    While some of her singing might be more common in Japan as you said about the Japanese language as well, but it's definitely not standard for metal in Japan. Babymetal is special in this regard.
    In Japan they have a whole kawaii culture (adorable/cute like a baby culture) which Babymetal combines with metal music. Babymetal clearly combines many opposites. :-)
    She was 16 here and Babymetal started when she was 12, so the cute element and high tones in her singing in some sense comes kind of natural to them (their are 3 singers as mentioned). To see a different side of Babymetal and to hopefully talk a bit about other parts of her singing please react to Babymetal Megitsune MV.

    I don't think you can make a lot of assumptions on Japanese metal by this performance. Babymetal is the world's first Kawaii Metal ("cute" metal) band - they invented a genre. Also Suzuka was just 16 and still in high school, so the costume was age appropriate. They are more mature and sophisticated now.
    Rondo of Nightmare is a good one to follow up with, or No Rain No Rainbow Legend S version to here something more recent

    Thanks for the great review.
    Su-Metal, the vocalist, has a lot of talent, but had been performing on stage for about ten years at the time of this performance. Her most remarkable skill is her ability to sing, even when dancing. This shows up in songs like Road of Resistance, Headbanger, Catch Me If You Can, and Yava. Then, in Tales of the Destinies, she performs a very complex piece with over a dozen time signature changes. You might like, Rondo of Nightmare, too.
    Oh! The bassist is Boh. He plays a six-string base and is as amazing as the rest.

I come from a classical/sacred choral/ Big Band Jazz /Metal background 😴😀 so am very much looking forward to your Babymetal reactions - incidentally, they were the last gig I went to in London in February! In terms of vocal and musician talent, I agree with the other commentators re 'Rondo of Nightmare' with Mischief of Gods intro by the Kami Band. All Su's solo numbers are great 'No Rain no Rainbow' is a very emotional one. 'Amore' is worth a listen to too. There are a million more - they are extremely addictive - some people see them as a gimmick - but soon change their minds after a few songs and inevitably fall into The Fox Hole!!
