  • I could not resist but to sell my Hasselblad 500C/M to Fuji GW690 Ⅲ
    Both are medium format although the Hasselblad shoots 12 shots per roll vs Fuji GW690 8 shots.
    In this video I would like to talk about my recent updates and my reasons for changing my camera to the later. Also I talk briefly about this camera. If you have any questions regarding this camera please leave in the comments below (not description!)
    *FYI this camera is a fixed camera (lense) meaning that the lens is stuck on the camera like Fuji X100 series.

    No regrets - I had a Blad kit for 30 years. For most prints it is effectively a 6x4.5 so its not that big a negative. Quality of the 500cm was TERRIBLE. Plastic parts all deteriorated, backs leaked light etc - Fuji lenses are superior and 6x9 is a perfect format. Sadly the missing element is a GW690III with a 150mm lens

    I did an apprenticeship at an factory photographer in the 80s. Our main camera was the Hassi 500 c/m. I believe, that we financed a whole business outfit with continuously repairing the cameras. We had five or six of them, and all the time at least two were in the repair shop. And if the camera was sent over, it took at least 2 to 4 weeks till we got it back.
    Depending on type of the film and its ISO, the MP equivalent of 135 film was something between 14 to 22 MP. 6x9 film easily reached over 100 MP, and some of them even got to the 200 MP. That's the reason, why I don't see any value in using a 35mm camera as an alternative to digital, but a MF camera really makes lots of sense, since only digital cameras in five digit price ranges can come close to its resolution. And we are not talking about the distinct charm of film here at all.

    • @RM.TokyoPhotographer
      @RM.TokyoPhotographer  3 года назад

      Thanks for your insight Rabert World..I never knew you were a repairman for Hassi 500c/m I would have soo much trouble dissembling a camera and putting it together :D
      because my main job as an ecomerce photographer digital is basically mostly made for efficiency and to me since I m mostly shooting in same lighting conditions, it gets boring in the long run :D So instead of making a boring youtube channel on Digital photography I went ahead and instead made a channel for film which I shoot on the weekends although its more like the artistic side and asthetics and the enjoyment of not knowing until its processed (negatives) theres this joy of seeing a tangible object instead of a digital file...theres something special...not resolution grainess but more like a collection thingy going on that I like.

    • @Dahrenhorst
      @Dahrenhorst 3 года назад

      @@RM.TokyoPhotographer You misunderstood, I wasn't a repairman for Hasselblads, I was training to become a professional photographer. We just needed a good relationship to a repair shop, because we continuously had broken Hassis which needed repair.
      Repairing cameras is actually not very difficult, it's in fact a hobby of mine, as long as there is no electricity in it. Since most purely mechanical cameras are at least 30 to 40 years old as of today, the biggest problem is to replace broken parts, since they are not available anymore. You need to cannibalize another camera to find that piece, or you need to know a good instrument mechanic who can make parts from scratch - what is quite expensive.
      Seeing that there is a film camera revival and millions of these old cameras still around, I strongly believe that learning to repair them, either as a service or to refurbish them for sales, could pay your bills.

    From the perspective of Hasselblad user since the 1980's until 2000 (500 series and 2000 series and virtually every Zeiss & Schneider zoom for Hasselblad) and many thousands rolls of 120 film it is an over rated, over priced camera system. The Zeiss lenses are good, but that that good. The Schneider zooms are ok, huge-large-heavy.. They do tend to need repair more often than is reported. Shutter in lenses need clean-lube-adjust, film backs need periodic clean-service or the spacing between frames will not be uniform, if a Zeiss or Schneider lens with shutter is not properly attached to the Hasselblad body the shutter trip mechanism cover can trip the shutter causing the lens to jam mid-mounted to the body requiring a Hasselblad service tech to fix it. Once a Hasselblad is loaded up with a PME prism and all the unit Hasselblad is Heavy and Bulky. After all these decades with Hasselblad, Never Again.. Heavy for what it is, Zeiss lenses are good, but not that good, cost of ownership is high, they must have preventive maintenance to be reliable, Pricy for what is offered. Hasselblad does have good resale value, but used Hasselblad buyer be very aware as most have been used LOTs...
    In comparison, the Fuji GW690 and GSW690 are moderate cost relative to the Hasselblad. Roughly one Fuji 6x9 or 6x8 (Japan) for the cost of one modest Hasselblad lens. The Fuji has a MUCH larger film frame which trounces the Zeiss-Hasselblad combo due to film image size and Fuji lens optical performance. The Fuji lenses are easily equal to the Zeiss in more ways than is appreciated. In the wide angel version GSW690, the Fujinon lens is a Biogon type true wide angle formula compared to a Retrofocus Zeiss wide angle of similar angle of view. The Fujinon Biogon type has far fewer optical elements than the Zeiss Retrofocus formula with inherent lower distortion, better contrast rendition and overall definition. The GW has the same Gauss or "Planar (Zeiss) lens formula essentially making these two far more similar than different. The Fuji 6x9 cameras are lower weight compared to a full up Hasselblad and being a range finder, no reflex mirror flip up and far less to go wrong mechanically, quieter with a lot less vibration and camera jump from the mirror and all that happens when the Hasselblad exposes film. No viewed image blanking during the shutter-camera film exposure cycle.. Focusing on the 6x9 Fuji cameras are plenty accurate enough..
    Unless longer than normal focal lengths are a must using two Fuji 6x9 cameras (one GW690, one GSW690) makes a very nice 120 roll film system. All this said, would absolutely go back to the Fuji 6x9 cameras, would Never go back to Hasselblad again.

It was unfortunate that I didnt match well with 6x6 format but i was fortunate enough to purchase it and shoot in a short period of time no doubt about the quality of image you get from shooting it. good luck to you too :)

    I'd recommend MF shooters, if they can...save and get BOTH the Hassy and the Fuji. They are two different beasts and are great.
    I had the 501CM and I found a deal that I fell into for a GSW690 III....and I love them both, but they are different things.
    I keep Portra 400 in the Fuji and I keep a couple of Hassy film backs, one for B&W and one for Color. The 6x6 square format is just special...but when I want larger I go the Fuji.
    If you get one, please, keep it and save and get the other.
    I can understand if the Hassy wasn't working, too bad it couldn't be serviced, but I'd recommend, saving your money and get a better working one and enjoy both systems and both formats.

      FYI if you have time try focusing something practice using some household itmes like bottle of coca cola/bottle put it at 1meter away
      then try 3 meter away then around inifitiy (without using any films), and if you are really worried you could just use one roll and test shoot at different distances to see if its really in focus etc etc...its hard to nail the shots at first time so keep practicing ;D
