The Crown Prince was ready to march back to Germany to put down the revolt but the Kaiser told him not to because Prince Max basically betrayed the Kaiser and announced his abdication without his permission. This put him in a terrible position and like you say basically forced him to abdicate as he wanted to do what he thought was the best for his country. He put his country first and therefore abdicated the throne to avoid a civil war. With the benefit of hindsight, I think Germany would've likely been better off in the long run had they marched back to Berlin and put the revolt down as there was basically a civil war anyway and the Nazis eventually came to power. @@ChadEmperor1871
