  • ARE YOU FAMILIAR with the name, no, with the name and the music of Madalena Lombardini-Sirmen (1735-1818)? It took the four young musicians of the Quartet Salonnières to bring this unusual talent to our attention. Majka Demcak, Aniela Eddy, Natalie Kress (violin/viola) and Cullen O’Neil (cello) performed "Shadows of Haydn" at the December 10, 2020, Midtown Concert at the Church of the Transfiguration in Manhattan, which included the Lombardini-Sirmen Quartet Op. 3 No. 2 in B-flat (the Andantino and Allegro).
Also on the program were pieces by Felice Giardini (1716-1796), Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745-1799), and of course Haydn himself (Un poco adagio e affettuoso from Quartet Op. 20 No. 4 in D). The performers explored the development of the string quartet by surveying the way composers from different national backgrounds conceptualized the genre: Franz Joseph Haydn from Vienna, with its dominating taste in string quartets; Maddalena Sirmen from the Venice Ospedale’s education system; and Joseph Boulogne from an upper-class Parisian milieu.
