Rebuilding My Jade Forest, The Bonsai Zone, Feb 2024

- I was given this Jade (Crassula ovata) from Connor many years ago and eventually developed into a forest. Sadly all the trees that I started from cuttings died after the last pruning and I was left once again with only the original tree.
Time to try again and re build the forest!

Zebras are a great touch
Had to get my cup of tea to watch your forest rebuild. You have a great way of looking at why the failure of the forest occurred. You are great at overcoming a failure and starting all over again. That is why, you are the master.

I found you a few years ago when I was searching videos about jades as I had just purchased one. (My 1st plant EVER) I find it quite ironic that today I happened to remember 'that bonsai guy' and here you are pruning the jades again... Weird! I actually had to search for jade bonsai to find you again. Glad to be back! Not sure why I never subscribed. Fixed that!

Hello Nigel. I would like to know where did you get your bronze Rake ? Probably impossible to find one like this anymore but... !! A copy/scan of it and a partnership with Lee Valley as they do loads of casting(outsourced) for all those beautiful planes they sell.... A few of us here would be really happy to get our hands on one...!

I am most concerned at your loss of the original forest.... if Nigel Saunders can lose so much inexplicably then what chance do I have? I guess that's the drawback of making a forest - you can't give them individual care. Thanks Nigel!
What do you think of making a faster draining mix for this type of jade? Like one part turface and 2 parts perlite. Just a thought. Might be a nice experiment if you have some cuttings left.
I use a very gritty mix and add about 15% cactus soil for my jades....they seem to appreciate a little more organics to survive the hot summers in Connecticut

shreks ears or ogres ears i think this gollum is. i know there are 6 or 8 gollum types. the one they call crassula "bonsai" has the best needle shape leafs almost a pine tree look to them, ive got a few in my collection that also died for some reason idk lol,. they can be funny like that
Ha, more trouble with succulents. The standard Golum trees can be really tricky to keep alive.

So I found a Gollum jade pot in a stairwell. It has 4 stems in it and it is about to tip over because it leans heavily to the sun (has never been turned). I’d like to adopt it. I have to separate the four stems though because it is a very small pot and the soil is compact and old and try to straighten the stems or cut them off and plant them straighter. Anyway the issue I have is that there are some scales on the plant and the leaves are a little sticky from scale waste I guess. I put some systemic in there to get rid of the scales but this’ll take a long time to have an effect if at all. I’d like to ask something: do you know if it is safe to mist the plant with diluted rubbing alcohol+a drop of dish soap and them after 5 minutes softly hose it off or will misting it with alcohol in this way not only kill the scales but also the whole plant? Also I’d like to know if there is any way to encourage branching of the gollum jade in certain directions as is possible with the other jade type with the leaves growing in pairs where branches will grow to the sides of the leaf pair that remains below the cut? I hope I’m making sense here.

FWIW. Jade folks tell me that jades like this with fatter leaves appreciate more frequent watering. It supposedly keeps the leaves fat and plump...🤷♂️

Lol am from Sweden and we are also slightly hesitant to say something is great or wonderful and use "fairly good", "quite nice" etc but in Swedish ofc😄 Kinda false humbleness and you can often tell by their expression on what they really thinks.
