Tried out your fortification strategy yesterday as neutral (tho fascist influenced due to the need for manpower) Finland and it worked like a charm. I was the one who had to declare war since the Soviets wouldn’t come and the Germans had already launched Barbarossa, however when the reds came they were held firmly at the forts between all them lakes in central and south eastern Finland. An hour of gameplay in and I’d inflicted 1 mln casualties on them whilst suffering only 50k. Obviously by that point I had joined the Axis but only as an ally in their war against the Soviets (yay historical accuracy) and eventually with combined forces we were able to push the Soviets first out of all of Finland, then out of the Soviet territory in the east and north, finally taking Leningrad and eventually Moscow itself. Casualties: 275k for me, 3 mln for them (total of 13 mln lost against the axis). So thanks for the inspiration, Alex. It was one of the most epic campaigns I’ve played in a long while.

The funny thing is if you fortify yourself up enough and/or join a faction, the Soviet Union doesn’t bother you. I made it well past the historical Winter War untouched and I could have stayed completely out of WW2 if I didn’t decide to join Germany on Operation: Barbarossa.
