LM-100J Super Hercules Goes Inverted at Farnborough 2018

- Lockheed Martin's LM-100J Super Hercules flight demonstration from the Farnborough International Air Show 2018 literally stole the show when Chief Pilot Wayne Robert pulled off maneuvers which literally made the Super Hercules mimic a Tom Cat out of "Top Gun". You see "Old pilots" or you end up seeing "Bold Pilots", but rarely you come across an "Old and Bold" pilot like Wayne Robert. Captain Wayne Robert's behind the wheel was apparently pulling off his last air show display before retiring, so he clearly seems to be taking all the leverage he needed to pull off stunts which would make people forget "fighters" at Farnborough.

I was in the Air Force for 8years and have been ferried all around the world inside the Hercules and I never felt safer than when flying in the C-130. It is one of best aircraft that has ever been made. The C-130 will never be redundant. I have the utmost respect for this aircraft and I was a crew chief on fighter jets for 8 years.

This is a beautiful design and has been since the get-go in 1954. Timeless engineering shows in simplicity and longevity and 65 years later it just keeps getting better and better. Bravo Lockheed!
Best part is - Lockheed hasn't stopped production of the C130-J model. It's still to this day the most versatile, rugged turboprop cargo plane that the US airforce has in its arsenal because of it's good STOL performance and rugged landing gear, which lets it land on rough or unprepared runways that other cargo planes would struggle to land on.
Probably also one of the only planes that is still in production to some capacity at least. This not counting the Basler DC-3 turboprop conversions as they don't actually produce Douglas DC-3 fusilages to make their conversions. They use existing ones to my knowledge.
In service since 1954, and still in production, the mighty Hercules. Somewhere up there Kelly Johnson is smiling.
Helium Road the L100, was the Civilian version of the C130 herc, but was made when it was just LOCKHEED , I first saw a pix of it at their headquarters in WATCHUNG NJ, when iDid a/c service there in 1968. Sadly that site is now a mall.
HR, The C130 did not enter service until late 1956. Australia was the first non-USA operator with the RAAF having acquired 12 C130A models with delivery starting in late 1958. I was fortunate enough to operate as a Flight Engineer on C130A-E-H models before going Boeing.
G'day BoeingFE, Spot on! My love affair with our Hercs really began at '486Sqn D Serve Hangar', Richmond. I'd go on a 'jolly' or volunteer for anything, as often as I could, if it involved flight time in a Herc.
There used to be a weekly USAF flight into Richmond, (usually an A Model Starlifter). Our young USAF brothers used to marvel at our A Models, never having seen one before. Often they used the 'museum' word, much to the irritation of us RAAF types. Sometimes we'd get a RAF or USAF Herc in for a visit, or passing through, and one of the things we always noticed was that our Hercs were a lot cleaner and neater inside and out. Even back then RAAF Herc crews regularly won inter-service and inter-air force competitions. You were no doubt involved in those achievements. Thanks for your service, mate. P.S. I sure hope the RAAF sticks with the Herc and doesn't let the Spartan take over completely. A decent aircraft but, really, a Herc is a Herc and there's nothing like a Herc! :)
G'day Bill. Thanks for your comments. I joined the RAAF the same year we got the C130A, 1958. I spent ten years with 36 Sqn, 8 of them as a C130 FE, mostly on the A model, a few hundred hours on the E model and only six months on the H model before taking on the B707 when we acquired those from Qantas. Left the RAAF in 1981 and went civil. L1011 and B747. I know nothing of the J model, but by all accounts it is doing a good job for the RAAF. Best wishes. BoeingFE.
My Daddy was a loadmaster on the Herky Bird during Vietnam. He would have loved this. He took my daughter and I to see the Blue Angles and sometimes I wonder if he went for their air show or Big Al? Forgive me if I got the name wrong. But we all grew knowing the stories of the C-130 as have his grand kids.

My Uncle was a Flight Sergeant Royal Air Force, and served as a Loadmaster on Hercules Aircraft for a number of years, sadly, he passed away this year, but he would have been very very proud at seeing the old War Horse still going strong, and giving a flying display like this

In the early '70's my Dad was stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. From our quarters on post I could see Pope Air Force Base. Used to see C-130's doing touch and goes all the time. I fell in love with those airplanes. The C-130 has always been my favorite. We used to go out to the drop zone and I have seen them drop everything from men to tanks.
Amazing piloting skills with this beast of a plane.

Wow! Jumped out of C-130s in 1969 in 82nd Airborne Division. Never even thought they could do a loop. Wow! Thank goodness they flew mostly straight and level with us. Always felt safe in a C-130. Good, solid, safe airplane.
Dont know your real name ..... but with cargo onboard and even souls on board there not permitted to do loops or even banks higher than 45 to prevent stress on the wing surfaces

Almost any aircraft can do a loop, as long as entry and exit air speeds are controlled - properly done, the aircraft dosen't see much more than 1G.
In around 1963 we took several C-130's from Dyess AFB at Abilene, Texas to Pope AFB loaded troops from Fort Bragg and flew both the 82nd and 101st on a joint drop.
@@williammawk1720 this particular aircraft is not your typical military transport either....a few highly visible mods are on it, plus the lightweight of a totally empty aircraft..........but, not to distract....its an incredible maneuver for any large aircraft.

one helluva an airplane i worked on the A and B models along with the first ski model while in Greenland during the extention of the Dew Line. Loved how it was able to do everything it was asked to do...

turbo-props are still essential for many reasons: One of them is it's more fuel-efficient than Turbo-jets & Turbo-fans.
Good old Herc, used to love the tree top drops and short landings and take offs ;) impressive flying ;)
I was one of the design engineers of the YC-130 Prototype Hercules at the main Lockheed Plant in Burbank CA - back in the mid 1950's. We built 2 of them. When Lockheed was awarded a production contract - production started at the new Lockheed plant at Warner-Robins AFB in Marietta, GA. Now the longest production run of any aircraft - by far - in history!

Maybe, What was the TOW? Surely enough, the Hercules was empty, with fuel enough for the show. I guess the improvements have gone towards a longer service life more than ingreasing the tolerance to G forces... I do not really care anyway.

My Father was a navigator in the USAF on C130's before he served in AC130's and once at a London Airshow they striped their C130 down as much as possible and did a roll. I wish I still had the newspaper that read something like 'Herc Stuns London Crowd'.
This is yet another reason why c130 is a legend!! Its as insaine as landing it on a carrier!

Great aerobatic manoeuvres from the Captain, I always think it is great when you can get an aircraft to whistle and howl too, thank you for sharing would be nice also to see the herky bird buzzing the airfield full throttle at only two feet altitude, when armoured car is dropped out of the back with guns blazing.

No, it was at least 600 feet, 100 feet is about the length of the Herc itself
It was a bit more than that definitely, it just seems super short because of the viewing perspective. It was probably a couple hundred yards.
The only Cargo Hauler I've seen that could perform in that manner is the McDonnell Douglas/Boeing C-17 Globemaster. It came in to land at the "Wings Over Wine Country Airshow" in Sonoma County, CA a couple of years ago. It landed very slowly, then stopped VERY short... and then backed up!! The comments from the crowd around me were pretty entertaining.
So impressive! Such a huge beast of a plane thrown around like a smaller jet. Amazing machine! Great pilots, I would have smp.

Soooooo....I was a loadmaster for the dear old USAF on H model 130’s, then for a little company called Southern Air Transport on the L-100’s. We had the highest time L100 in the world, with just under 100,000 hours. We made the USAF look pretty timid on occasion, but this new J-model is a badass! I damn near cried watching this. I grew up in the aviation world on Hercs. May there always be that unique engine drone in the sky as long as we need planes. 😎

I love the way those engines are hung so far froward or out on the wings, and the props are perfectly inline.

well aircraft may and have been sustaining inverted flight pal. maybe not all but the ones can may and have been. the main problem is -1 G on aircraft components especially the engine, most engines can sustain inverted flight for a short duration and military crafts have oil reservuars etc for negative G or inverted flight for longer durations. In a loop you never have negative g thus if the airframe permits, and you have enough speed, you can loop anything including helicopters. You can do inverted flight with RC copters and nearly all hobbycraft and nearly all military aircraft so what you talk about is just a bit misinformation.

Bigger engines and the 6 blade prop.,would of loved to off worked on it. I worked on about everything from the A model to the H model. Even helped do the change over on the A's from 3 bladers to 4 bladed Hamilton. This J is just mind blowing ,I'd never imagined this was possible.
Amazing climbing ability, how can you not love the latest version of the 60+ year old workhorse?!? The Warthog will forever be my favorite aircraft though...

Lockheed better buy him gold watch....... that was amazing, and shows that most any airplane can do many aerobatic maneuvers as long as you maintain the proper energy/airspeed, stay within g-load tolerances and of course have sufficient altitude. Old/Bold pilots.... I can't imagine what the crew's pre-flight briefing was like.......

It's impressive enough, maybe slow your roll on the Top Gun comparison. It can reasonably, dare I say easily argued that the C-130 family has been the most useful design in military aviation history.
No doubt whatsoever in the validity of that claim.
The C130 will remain in service in the 2030s, possibly reaching its 80th Anniversary which I think is incredible.

They came along the Coquet Valley flying low every other day,in Northumberland,UK,a few years back,on training sorties,and they were flying lower than the altitude of my static caravan,in the valley.
I think it was the build-up to the Iraq war,and a few times I watched two Tornadoes dog-fighting and attacking them,as the mighty beast rolled and banked all the way up the valley ...amazing to watch...literally hedge-hopping like the Lancasters of old.
We had our own daily Air display looking over the valley,sadly for my Wife and Myself,ill-health took over and we had to abort our Caravan holidays..but the training still goes on..with Typhoons no doubt!!

This pilot is obviously in control, keeping up the speed and lift.. But I keep flashing back to that B-52 crash in Fairchild AFB in 1994...

I think a big part of the difference is this aircraft uses ailerons for roll , whereas the B-52H in the 1994 crash used spoilerons. But, either way, as you said speed/lift is the key difference.
And...AND! that b52 pilot was a hotdog ass. everyone who ever let him get away with his stupid cowboy crap got fired. he exceeded the 52 max capabilities consistently, until that last flight.

Being a Farnborough resident, I've seen 50+ yrs worth of airshows, and been on the company stand for some. Some things worry me more than an SU35 Cobra over my house; that was one of them. I watched him do that from the Farnborough road by the Swan pub. The first time, I was thinking "please stay up there". Next time I was thinking "please don't land on my shed". Strong air-frame!

I have a deep and abiding love for the Hercules. I watched one land on a highway in the desert of Saudi Arabia, drop the ramp, and spit out pallets of cargo as it rolled down the road, then the ramp went up and it took off. From landing to takeoff was maybe five minutes.
I had no idea the Hercules was capable of anything even close to that! my jaw fell open when he did that loop! if I was a pilot id be begging to get my ass in the captains chair lol

You know a pilot's skilled when he can take a Herc, handle it like a fighter and *not* suffer a sudden, uncontrolled and rapid G-force related disassembly. A true show of airmanship right there!!

I doubt the flight control system would allow it. A barrel roll is a combination of a loop and simultaneous aileron roll. Its around a 2.5G manouver so technically it can be done if lightly loaded. The aileron roll is a 1G if done correctly. What we see with the C130 here is what are called wingovers.. they are about 1.5 to 2G so well withing the capabilities of the airframe.

@@DigBipper188 Well I have never done it in a large airplane but in trained hands the manouver itself is quite simple. We used to teach the wingover to aerobatic students in order to "wake their feet up". I.e most of the time you fly an airplane with minmal rudder inputs. But in aerobatic flying there are much larger inputs that have to be coordinated with other flight controls. The Wingover was perfect for that.
