  • Translated from Italian as "The sigh" ( not Liszt' original title by the way ) this is an aural painting , the seascape equal to the masterpieces of Turner or Aivazovsky ... So clearly you can "see" the gently rolling waves, smell the salty breeze, marvel at first glimpses of majestic sunrise at the very end., all in a perfect solitude.....Why in the world this gorgeous Nocturne is called an ETUDE? Did old man Liszt decided to joke with us? No, he certainly knew what he was doing! This piece is the best proof that technique, yes, that elusive thing so many aspiring pianists are desperately trying to conquer , the "technique" is nothing but physiological function of the body, just as natural a thing as breathing or walking. If you let your soul, your imagination, your ears lead the way, the fingers will come along.
Recorded November 2012 in the medieval church of beautiful village of Blumenstein Switzerland, Bosendorfer imperial from www.leclavier.ch/

This etude is harder than it appears to be. The entire melody is switched back and forth between both the left and right hands and she plays it seamlessly.

It's still one of Liszt's easier pieces, though. Certainly not comparable to the transcendental etudes.

So nice to see a pianist with an exemplary technique choosing to play the music and not just show off the technique. Some would call this a leisurely pace, but it seems entirely appropriate to bring out the details and capture the mood of the piece. Beautiful interpretation.

Had not heard the Hamlin version when I posted this a couple years ago, but will have to admit his is without a doubt better. No lag or slowing down when the dual notes are played left hand crossing over the right hand. I'm back at it again too with Liebestraume, Consolations No.3 in D flat, a few Chopin preludes, two Beethoven sonatas along with a little of Debussy are giving me the most satisfaction in my later years even though it'll probably not be the quality that it once was....too many years passed! Many nights listening, with headphones on glistening to Valentina's virtuosity and others. Thank you God for giving 🎹 to the world!

She went on to earn a masters degree in piano performance. She could’ve easily gone on to be world renowned, but she met me, I kissed her and swept her off her feet. I count myself as the luckiest of men, for my list is long, but it now ever includes the conclusion" see Valentina Lisitsa play the piano. I cannot believe that anyone can be that much finer and more tender and more technically perfect than anyone else I've ever seen playing the piano."
