- Translated from Italian as "The sigh" ( not Liszt' original title by the way ) this is an aural painting , the seascape equal to the masterpieces of Turner or Aivazovsky ... So clearly you can "see" the gently rolling waves, smell the salty breeze, marvel at first glimpses of majestic sunrise at the very end., all in a perfect solitude.....Why in the world this gorgeous Nocturne is called an ETUDE? Did old man Liszt decided to joke with us? No, he certainly knew what he was doing! This piece is the best proof that technique, yes, that elusive thing so many aspiring pianists are desperately trying to conquer , the "technique" is nothing but physiological function of the body, just as natural a thing as breathing or walking. If you let your soul, your imagination, your ears lead the way, the fingers will come along.
Recorded November 2012 in the medieval church of beautiful village of Blumenstein Switzerland, Bosendorfer imperial from www.leclavier.ch/

Her hands are so soft that it appears She doesn't even touch the keys, wonderful
Hands are made of water !!!!!
said so beautifully...😍
This etude is harder than it appears to be. The entire melody is switched back and forth between both the left and right hands and she plays it seamlessly.
It's still one of Liszt's easier pieces, though. Certainly not comparable to the transcendental etudes.
@@gayusschwulius8490 yes but it is one of the good pieces by Liszt, although I think every piece by him is incredible
@@gayusschwulius8490 It’s rated 8 out of 9 on the Henle scale of difficulty. It’s comparable to other Liszt etudes and not easy.
I love Liaitsa‘s version and also Arrau 's version
Yes, it must be, as I can just about play it! For once, it isn’t the octave stretches that floor me; it’s the dodgy chromatic jumps!
So nice to see a pianist with an exemplary technique choosing to play the music and not just show off the technique. Some would call this a leisurely pace, but it seems entirely appropriate to bring out the details and capture the mood of the piece. Beautiful interpretation.
I don’t think many people would called this a leisurely pace
Valentina i love you
I am so not lying when I say that this is the most beautiful rendition of une sospiro I have ever heard. Truly how "your soul, your imagination, your ears lead the way" in your performance Valentina!!
Pratham Gurung Paul barton is my favorite, I strongly recommend you to check it out
This is beautiful and I will check out Paul Barton, but also check out Harold Bauer for a real throw back on this Etude. Something from a different era, it was my first recording of this Etude.
It's my favourite rendition too because she played it on a Bösendorfer which adds richness to the piece imo. And Liszt sounds best on a Bösendorfer.
@TheTage Show already did
Try Arrau and Hamelin. They are both perfect and magical !
and then we go about our day ....having made life wealthier by 6 minutes and 7 seconds
Like your astute comment!

I go to my piano to learn it! 😊

Thank you for the inspiring words, Val ;-)
thats not for inspiration imo, it is saying that technique is natural, but the important thing that people dont realise is also a challenge is play naturally, beautifully, and not mechanically.
Agree!
@@lawrencewei3583 That is the inspiring thing there, letting go of forcingly trying to accomplish a "technical" mechanical sound, but just letting it flow, relax and you get much better and faster results

Your piano playing is inspired, magnificent. I listen to your recordings for hours on end. I played piano for 75 years. I am now almost 80, and have given my Steinway to my grand daughter with the hope that she will make good use of it, but I think it is a vain hope.
hiromi
David Gelfand I wish my grandpa had a Steinway
+Alec Fonseca ..Valentina plays a Bosendorfer not a Steinway.
Lucky you! take care of it :)
David Gelfand... Then give it to somebody who really will love it and need it like the Life itself.
I am Pianist and need a Piano and for every real Pianist who can not afford one Piano it is like breathing and ressurection.
And he will play play and play... He will make a Wood be a Life Miracle and Poeple who listen will feel the Life in themselves.
So give it to a real Pianist
There are many of is who can not afford one real Piano amd play on a Digital.
Her fingers are so majestic 😍😍
Such fluidity and technique. It's like watching ballet being danced on the keys. Beautiful grace.
I thought this looked pretty easy until I started actually playing it. She just makes it look easy - mark of a true musician :)
Exactly my thoughts. Just watching her I thought to myself "This is gonna be so relaxing to play" and then I started learning it and was like, "Oh, this actually isn't easy".
It doesn’t start difficult but my goodness does it become hard
No
This stuff is REAL HARD ….. you can t even IMAGINE THAT HARD UNTIL you start off this piece of practising …..it’s like ….gosh 😢😢😢😢😢
I'm so impressed by her technique.. unbelievable performance!!! Thanks so much Valentina Lisitsa!!!!
Wow..She is The Best pianist!!! I love Valentina Lisitsa!!!
I agree, in a field of many brilliant pianists. Valentina has such awesome touch. The keys are caressed.
What a gorgeous description: the seascape as an "aural painting".... I've loved this song for years and never experienced it this way until reading those words. The language unlocked the painting for me! Thank you so much!
Such a beautiful soul...the music just flows so purely from her hands, her touch...she truly understands Liszt, and sure he would agree...a very rare talent indeed..
Exquisite performance!
marvelous interpretation, the best "sospiro" I have heard
Exquisite!
Listz.... thank you for your beautiful music. Too often people forget how insanely gifted you are as a composer. The melody in this piece that you composed moved me so much and brought me to a place I never knew existed. Thank you Mr Listz. Rip...
Take a deep breath, Liszt is full of details and unexpected changes, yet in serenity and harmony, and revealing the meaning of that moment timelessly.
I don't know of any piano as gorgeous sounding as the Bosendorfer. Exquisite taste Valentina. Love you so much as a person and pianist. You're the best! Simply other worldly playing. Thank you thank you.
I remember playing this some 40 plus years ago. Just purchased a new keyboard five months ago and you've inspired me to begin working on it again soon. Franz Liszt is alive again with your very beautiful rendition and is by far the best I've heard yet. Your talent is from God and heaven speaks thru your fingers.
Had not heard the Hamlin version when I posted this a couple years ago, but will have to admit his is without a doubt better. No lag or slowing down when the dual notes are played left hand crossing over the right hand. I'm back at it again too with Liebestraume, Consolations No.3 in D flat, a few Chopin preludes, two Beethoven sonatas along with a little of Debussy are giving me the most satisfaction in my later years even though it'll probably not be the quality that it once was....too many years passed! Many nights listening, with headphones on glistening to Valentina's virtuosity and others. Thank you God for giving 🎹 to the world!
Your last sentence is sheer poetry.
Just right for Val.
I don't have words to express how nice this is. I've heard so many renditions, music just flows from her. Bowled over by this performance.
She's dancing ballet with her hands, it's beautiful
This piece has brought me to tears often but with Valentina it's in a whole new way, crying for those beautiful flowing hands. Thank you.
Valentina is so talented.........wonderful.....
What a pleasure to both hear this lady play this masterpiece and also see her hands glide over the keys, hardly seeming to touch them at times.
Браво, брависсимо, дорогая Валентина Евгеньевна! Желаю Вам здоровья на долгие годы!
What a gift! To the world from Lizst and Lisitsa! We are truly blessed to be in these times with the likes of her (of which there are but a known handful). We need reminders, constantly it seems, of the depth of human understanding and compassion.
Thanks, a thousand times....
I asked first, Valentina!!! you just go and check. Its so beautiful... thank you. You are simply amazing! People who complain about Liszt need to listen to this work...by you.
Still one of my favorite pieces of music. Valentina makes the bottom of her Bösey sing ! Even when a voice moves from hand to hand, she is so fluid. I am grateful, Valentina.
To me her hands look like butterflies touching the keys gently and producing this beautiful music. Love it!
Every day i am discovering your talent and that make me happy .
I'm crying every time. YOU ARE THE BEST! BRAVO VALENTINA LISITSA!
Its not a bug. Its a mechanism to prevent scams. When a video gets 300 views too fast, the counting of the views freezes and the youtube analyses the video, to see if its "true" or something fake.
Stunning...
Valentina is for me outstanding in this piece! Really "Un sospiro" !
One of my favorite pieces to play and to listen. Brava! Valentina.
Valentina is just a genius. I’m very touched when listening to her playing.... just amazing!,,,,
Everything she does looks so relaxed, and effortless. All the energy comes out in a lush, full sound. She's amazing.
Your playing and interpretation of this piece is superb! Hilary Hahn is lucky to have you as her long term accompanist!
A gorgeous performance of one of the most beautiful pieces ever written.
Valentina: you make those genious composers reborn by your hands. Valentina - an angelical midia.
Bellissimo...lo suoni divinamente...sei unica.😚
"Technique is nothing but physiological function of the body". The most correct thing I have ever read from a world-class pianist. This should be at the top of all your videos.
This is why we love Valentina Lisitsa. Bravissimo.
the way her hands intertwine is absolutely graceful
Absolutely breathtaking to watch her supple fingers effortlessly flutter over the keyboard like butterflies.
Zart und kräftig. Wunderschön. Eine der besten Aufnahmen dieser berühmten Etüde.
I love you Valentina
This performance made my day!
It is as though you channel the very spirit of Liszt, from the black and white markings on the composition page through your eyes and mind, and down through your hands and fingers to the black and white keys on the piano. An aural delight.
Valentina is my heartfelt favorite..always my number one pianist.!!
Me too.
1:01 Getting those 3 against 7s up to speed is one of the most challenging aspects of this piece, and yet you just nail them and perform them with such grace!
inspirational playing, thank you!
Absolutely gorgeous. Smooth as silk. I realized I'd stopped breathing at the end.
Your performances are so touching to me that I can't stop listening to them. I also admire your way of playing; it seems that your fingers are not playing but caressing the keys.... It is very inspiring for us the studens... Thank you for sharing your music with us!!!!!!
.
Your tempi and expression always seem perfectly aligned with what the composers wanted. Lovely!
what a great joy a get from the life when I hear you playing. Thank you for posting your music.
she loves Bosendorf pianos..such a warm sound and her exquisite sensitiviťy..
Her touch is perfect for the richer voice of the imperial 290
This piece is, for me at least, a perfect rendition of the feeling we could get by admiring a night sky and slowly discover it's wonder with a telescope. John Williams may have had some inspiration for E.T. in here :D
Hands like butterflies on the keyboard! Absolutely the best !
Chère Valentina Comme d'habitude je suis émerveillé par la clarté de votre piano, votre toucher d'une grâce inimitable. Merci pour ces moments magiques!
Una delicadeza increíblemente bella!!!🎶 💕 🎶 💕
A genius like Liszt is made totally understood by an outstanding interpreter like Valentina..!!
This is my favourite piece. It is so relaxing and beautiful. Thank you Valentina
...nothing less than perfect!

Народу нравится! Валя, спасибо! Умница
Большая!
As a freshman at the University of Tennessee, Martin Tennessee campus, my wife heard this piece and was determined to learn it. It took her a couple of weeks but she had it down perfect. She went on to earn a masters degree in piano performance. She could’ve easily gone on to be world renowned, but she met me, I kissed her and swept her off her feet. Her professor, a graduate of Juilliard, thought of her as one of the best students she’s ever had.
Thank you for posting this recording: I thought it was a wonderful performance and interpretation as well as a great source of inspiration of how to approach this study
I was very moved by your wonderful playing of this Liszt piece. One could close one's eyes and visualize in the minds eye the canvass painted by Liszt. God Richly Bless You Valentina!.....Will
Great Interpretation of piece. Probably the elegant.
Wiser words were never written!!! Dear Valentina i couldn't agree more with your conception!! Beautiful!!!!!
I'm amazed at how fast your fingers move, and yet you seem so relaxed. Its as if this is effortless for you. I'm so jealous.
C'est beau, éblouissant, fabuleux, extraordinaire, que dis-je, c'est suprême, MONUMENTAL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MERCI !
Your hands look like the sound of the piece. I don't know how to explain. Just at ease, like the melody
With all one's heart, it's the best interpretation of Un Sospiro that I've never heard. It's so sweet... Thank you very much Lisitsa, you make me feel like in heaven...!

Oh, it flows, flows like a stream! Air is like butterfly flies! You play with much grace, elegance! Thank you for this season with F.Listz ....Valentina !!
Marie..
Ah, Liszt! Music so ethereal and image-invoking, played by a true artist.
I knew I would learn something watching and listening to her MUSical playing . Thats the thing ! There is philosophy in this music and she gives it meaning and sense and LIFE!!!!
i love this rendition of un sospiro the most:')
How liberating your play is magnificunt love to follow your progress
She makes it seems so effortless!
As we all do, sometimes I construct lists of reasons for gratitude, of the form "I am glad to be alive because I lived to ...". And then you fill it in. I count myself as the luckiest of men, for my list is long, but it now ever includes the conclusion" see Valentina Lisitsa play the piano. I cannot believe that anyone can be that much finer and more tender and more technically perfect than anyone else I've ever seen playing the piano."
this is one of the most beatiful things i've ever heard in my entire life! thank you so much Valentina! with all my heart.
2:10 ha...So good... love you Lisitsa♡
Une merveille visuelle et sonore...Valentina, you are great!
