  • The fellows at Modern Music in Ft. Lauderdale really want to change your mind about "import" guitars, and they've dug out a Fender Robert Cray Signature Stratocaster to support their claims. From the sound of things, I think opponents of NAFTA have an uphill battle ahead of them. Man, that reference is vintage!

I have a Robert Cray MIM Stratocaster. It's a damn fine guitar. It was the only hardtail strat in town. It came with good pickups. I would put it up against MIJ and MIA Fenders.
The current MIA Robert Cray Stratocaster is made by the Custom Shop. This has a list of $5800.

MAYBE FROM A MARKETING STANDPOINT, THE FENDER COMPANY WANTS TO " RESELL " THEIR GUITARS, NAMING & LABELING THEM SUCH AS " DELUXE " " CUSTOM SHOP " " SPECIAL " & " PLUS " " LIMITED EDITION " ETC... THE MORE YOU PAY, THE BETTER GUITAR YOU GET ? DEFINITLY NOT ! YOU CAN EASILY GET A BETTER GUITAR MADE IN JAPAN, KOREA OR MEXICO, HALF THE PRICE OF AN AMERICAN FENDER...THE ONLY GOOD POINT ABOUT A " CUSTOM MADE " AMERICAN GUITAR IS THAT IT'S A GOOD INVESTMENT ( WHEN YOU DECIDE TO SELL IT ) THATS ALL...

All I know is that I got a mexican Lone Star Deluxe strat to be my workhorse and man that guitar is fantastic! The texas specials with the Pearly Gates( seymour Duncan) that come stock sound sweeeet togheter. I get people asking how do I get that sound all the time and it's just the guitar ( fingers also help a litle LoL). I play 3 hours gigs with no sweat. It's confortable to play AND stay in tune. ME VERY HAPPY MAN!

I have a purple/blue one of these, bought 2nd hand off Ebay, earlier in the year, for about £350, including a Fender case. It has the TBX Tone Control system fitted, and sounds fantastic for a budget guitar.
The ironic thing is, I bought the guitar intending to fit it with a set of Kent Armstrong Specials, but the stock p/ups are so nice, I've kept them. I've fitted the Kent Armstrong p/pups to a Jap '57 Re-issue Strat, and they sound great, too!

it was definitely in the early to mid 80's that the MIJ Strats were a thing. Especially when Fender shut-down the factory to re-tool for the new ownership.
