@jemimallah For you to ask that idiotic question is _proof positive you know little to nothing_ of the history of rock and roll. Time for you to get back in your highchair at the card table with the rest of the children and let the _adults_ talk, ok?
@jemimallah He was an asshole for what he said 50+ years ago but come on If you honestly still believe Eric is a raging racist that hates black people you clearly haven't paid attention to his career, the guys whole career has been emulating and being inspired by and playing with black blues legends. Context is key as well, yes one time he had a racist rant but it was at a very different time when mass migration of Africans to an already overcrowded England was happening like never before and a young 25 year old ish impressionable Eric was brainwashed by far right politician Enoch Powell, like many gullible white English people, into thinking that it was going to destroy the country. Again, there is no real excuse for what he said but I don't believe it came from a place of pure hatred but more naivity, fear and confusion. In regards to great music history; First guitarist to play a Les Paul through a cranked Marshall amp, Influencer of a whole generation of guitarist including Jimi Hendrix, Brian May, EVH. Changing rock music forever with Cream, the list goes on...
I know I’ll never be famous or be a professional guitarist but Eric Clapton made me want to learn to play a guitar when I was 13. I’m 44yrs old as I write this and still love to play the guitar. The older I get the more I appreciate the man who inspired me to play. Not only is he a great guitarist but the more I listen the more I am amazed at his singing and the sound of his voice!
"Yeah, that'll do." And that grin. Wow! What a wonderfully warm, understated response. He was truly impressed. I can't imagine what the Fender guys must have felt to get such a warm approval from such a legend. Job well done!
I saw Eric on New Years Eve, half mile from my home, playing a benefit charity Gig, forget nostalgia, this man is still a World class entertainer as fresh as anyone
No-one inspired me more than EC. On my new album I play a 1990 Blackie and and 2010 Blackie. The sound is so unique. Thank you Eric for the soundtrack of my life 🎸🎸🎸
I was just thinking that. Not only was he at the center of it all, the way he expresses himself is mesmerizing. I could listen to him tell stories all day. It's also nice to hear his point of view, where it's clear that he never thought of himself as God, just a simple guy who loved music. Hands down one of my favorite musicians ever. And it just so happens that the first riff I learned on the guitar when I was 7 years old was "Sunshine of your love"...
Well being practical, you might read his biography and read page after page of drug addiction, lots and lots of money wasted in drugs, living in a mansion house among dog shit, thrash, drugs and wasting his talent in years of drugs. A complete turn off. Did I mention heavy drinking too? Thanks by the book and great songs (3 or 4) anyway.
This man is history. And anything he touches and plays becomes history and part of a legend as well. I'd be honored to be in the same room with this guitar, let alone in the same room with EC
Eric is a class guy, I was lucky enough to see him with John Mayall's band in the Twisted Wheel Club in Manchester UK, I also got to see Cream's earliest gigs at the wheel on an off night, just jamming an audience of maybe 20 or 30 people who had no clue that this was a seminal event, Eric, always approachable would hang around the stage and I remember asking him how could he bend the strings so easily he shared all tricks with me (I was only 15) but he treated me like a fellow journeyman.
@@saidmuhammadizzat4994 How about hustling and making moves on his best friend’s wife? Would you? “Slow Hand” is lucky that George Harrison didn’t put a bullet in his head.
For me, This interview is priceless. I do not even know where to begin. I love Eric's music so much. I was a young teen when the Derick and the Dominoes Album came out. I still remember where I was and what I was doing the first time I ever heard " Bell Bottom Blue's" I loved hearing Eric talk about how picking up that guitar brought back memories of making that album. Only 100 of these guitars were made, owning one is on my bucket list for sure. :-)
Rosewood is king imo, I prefer a natural wood unwder my fingers were as maple has a finish on it and when I'm playing hard in the heat it just seems tacky

An animated storyteller and someone who's able to clearly articulate his thoughts. I think it was a part of his success as an artist, although there were of course lots of obstacles to overcome.

To all the people who are saying that it's a historical piece and it should be respected, well... The one played by Eric was the historic piece. That one deserves the respect. Eric put his sweat and tears into that one, literally. Every bump or scuff that it has on it has been a culmination of years of ownership and hardwork and it comes from a story, an actual even that has happened in the history. The ten thousand or so copies of it which are being produced to look like the historic one aren't Eric's guitar. They're just an ordinary piece of wood with no story to them other than the fact that they were scratched up in a factory by some workers. Buy your own regular guitar, own it for some time, and have stories of it to tell about the time you've spent with it. If you're dedicated enough, some namey guitar company will want to make copies of your guitar. Nothing will make you feel more proud than being able to tell your own story rather than buying a recreated copy of someone else's story.
I've always been a single cut guy. Love t style and les paul style guitars. Listening to a lot of clapton inspired me to try out a strat and finally purchase one. Love it a lot surprisingly, especially as someone who usually only like humbuckers. Found it's great for different uses than what I'm used to. Thanks fender and eric.

D.B. You’re so wrong in all way. Your guitar will be just an old guitar (if you don’t go out there and step up, make a trend and create successful history with it) It’s Clapton’s old Guitar, of course it’s an artifact because that guitar made a relevant and a successful one too, in music history-which inspires younger generation now to create BETTER one. Soooooo basically you’re just jealous because your guitar will not be an artifact of someone great.
I just ordered the Fender Custom Shop Eric Clapton Stratocaster I certainly made the right decision to get Serious about Blues guitar Thanks FENDER & ERIC CLAPTON
I love Eric more and more each day. Such a wonderful, humble, beautiful and kind man. I love watching him play on TV with his great musician fellow friends. I could be like this all day.
Can we just appreciate the wife variety of guitars now at our finger tips. I can get a strat of any color with any neck for decent price. I'm grateful for that
Buy a regular new one and put 5,000 or so hours playing it and I guarantee it will mean more to you than this thing that was hacked at by someone in a factory.
dukeford stop being a jackass. there's no need to insult him in anyway. he's just saying that the guitar you spend your days with is more valuable to you than a tribute guitar. he's not insulting the guitar really, other than slightly insulting the factory workers with maybe 30+ years working there
Never fails to amaze me when someone takes a statement and immediately replies with a name calling comment are stunned when they get the crap they dished out served right back at them.
To me, it’s amazing that the people at Fender get to reverse engineer what they did so many decades ago & the effects that aging had on those works. That must be so much fun. It’s so rare today that we get to focus on quality of work, as all cost.
I came to this from the Andy Summers Tribute Telecaster. The Moment when Clapton looks at it with a lump in his throat and says "yeah that'll do". Don't forget Clapton doesnt have "Brownie" anymore - he gave it up. As Andy Summers said "Whern I opened the case, it was like the twilight zone because I knew I'd left it (his original) in the loft at home." I'm sure Clapton feels similar here. It's not the oriiginal but so close as to evoke memories/feelings/life experiences of years long gone. This was/is the "Layla" guitar....
Is Clapton wearing his Patek 2499 platinum here. I can see the moonphase. It would make sense, and the interview is from before he sold it at auction for $3.65 Million. Crazy watch!
having met Seymour Duncan many years ago & listening to his stories , I believe Seymour met Eric & wound some pups for him just prior to Layla being recorded. In fact Eric had the sound in his mind but could not get it from the standard pups. Nearly 15 yrs ago I was lucky to find an all black 1983 MIJ strat with lace sensor pups, Gotoh tuners & maple neck in pawn shop just prior to the whole planet getting connected to i/net - not so easy to get a bargain now. I paid $200 for it & have never touched truss rod or frets - just a complete rewire- improved the tone enormously. Since retiring I have made a few high end guitars but still love the Strat & can't bring myself to sell it, even tho it's now worth a lot more than it cost.
I have no money to buy these expensive guitars, however, my brother repoed a Harmony "Brownie" Strat copy and its a solid, great sounding guitar! and he gave it to me! I Love It! Hey, it's all about the music not what instruments we play anyhow!
More people have absolute pitch than you’d think, I have relative pitch but it’s close enough since I can recognise most notes immediately, nothing special and nothing really unique
All the great guitar players that I have known (from the local scene) and there has been a few.. All rate Clapton as their favourite guitar player. I think this is the case all round the world.
I have an '82 American Standard that looks a lot like this one.. but with several wear spots on the neck... I also named mine Brownie. Ive been fortunate to see Clapton live 7 times. My all time favorite guitar he played was Blackie tho.
It's so funny watching these guys handle the guitar with white gloves like it will break with the wrong look when the guitar is already beat to hell. One thing about Fenders I've always loved is just how damn durable they are.
Orlando Morales I was thinking the exact same thing it's ALREADY beat, how much more can it hurt to be handled by hands lol.. I'm sure Eric never handed it like a baby.
I think some of you are missing the point. These guys at the FCS are true searchers. They honor the tradition of the Fender company...and another thing; some things in this world are special...worth far more than money. Some things which are created are great...greater even than thier creator in some cases. The search for understanding of what makes something like Blackie,, Bownie, whatever into something which has a soul...this is love of what you do. That is why Fender is tops..100% dedication
Beautiful guitar but there's something odd about reproducing all of those nicks and scratches. Those were all earned by Clapton through years of great playing, but the person buying the replica hasn't done the work to earn those signs of passion. They are just paying to not have to do the hard work.
When I saw Brownie of the back of the Layla album, I knew someday I'd have a Strat with a worn maple neck. To me, a tobacco sunburst Strat with a maple neck and a cherry sunburst Les Paul Standard are the two most beautiful guitars in creation.
@hungerstriker27 that's how I feel now. When I was just starting out I had this idea that I needed a signature model of someone's guitar to get a good tone, but I've reached this comfort zone with my own strat that I wouldn't trade for anyone's repro
I own 2 guitars, they are not costly. But they are extension of my body, They will age with me. I wouldn't do anything to make them look like new again. Or neither will buy a new guitar and forcefully make it to look like an old one.
Around 4:30 Clapton talks about rosewood fretboards and how they feel resistant to bending. I thought I was the only one that felt this way! I've always preferred maple to rosewood for exactly this reason. Maple feels smoother to my fingers.
I got a fender a few years ago and knew nothing about it . It is made in Mexico and is a beauty. It has a tag on the neck plate it says CE . Did a bit of research on it and found it was made by a master builder . The only issue I had with it was it had a single layer of plastic for the face . I did put on a 3 layer because it just looked kind of crappy with only one layer. From the very first time I heard Layla I said that the tune would be hard to play but learned later in life . Eric I think is a master string bender of all time.
karsaurlong I'm basically saying that I wouldn't buy a guitar that is a copy of the guitar that someone famous used. I like some signature guitars like the ibanez Jem. I guess you could also call the les Paul a signature guitar. Those are fine, I just don't want a guitar that is a clone of what Eric Clapton, Jimmy page, etc played
Needless to say, a very pricey Fender Stratocaster - that is, if one is fortunate enough to have the chance of owning one. I use the word, "fortunate", facetiously because personally I'm not too interested. Only a limited run of these guitars that are likely picked up by collectors of whom most wouldn't know how to string the thing or tune it much less play it. Probably end up behind glass in someone's home or office somewhere in Japan. And I lied, by the way. I can't help myself. I'd love to own one.
Every great guitarist knows his musical tool. Weird to say it that way but that’s what it is to them. It’s their job and that’s what they use. The maple we used to call it a blonde neck. I had an early 70’s rosewood, and loved it.
I'm a huge Eric Clapton fan I also like maple fretboards. they mentioned my favorite Derrick and the Domino's song "It's to late". but unfortunately this is about relic guitars. something that I just can't stand it's dishonest. I believe guitars should get their battle scar's naturally.

It’s Clapton’s old Guitar, of course it’s an artifact because that guitar made a relevant and a successful one too, in music history-which inspires younger generation now to create BETTER one.
Soooooo basically you’re just jealous because your guitar will not be an artifact of someone great.
So both Blackie and Brownie were/are 3 piece bodies! That’s just wild. Never knew that. I learned something new today.
Nothing more beautiful than the sound of a strat.
A Steinway Piano
And an original burst.eric sounds great on both gibson and fender.
I could be like this all day.
it's clapton's guitar,showing respect is warranted,he is a stratmaster,period
Eric Clapton. A living legend. Guitarist legend like none other.
Can we just appreciate the wife variety of guitars now at our finger tips. I can get a strat of any color with any neck for decent price. I'm grateful for that
Buy a regular new one and put 5,000 or so hours playing it and I guarantee it will mean more to you than this thing that was hacked at by someone in a factory.
dukeford stop being a jackass. there's no need to insult him in anyway. he's just saying that the guitar you spend your days with is more valuable to you than a tribute guitar. he's not insulting the guitar really, other than slightly insulting the factory workers with maybe 30+ years working there
Never fails to amaze me when someone takes a statement and immediately replies with a name calling comment are stunned when they get the crap they dished out served right back at them.
dukeford cuz we're too busy bustin out the blues out of our fingers, while we laugh at people like you struggling to play the basic blues in E
dukeford 'cus everyone loves an arrogant rich boy!
dukeford 'cus everyone loves an arrogant rich boy!
Eric Clapton has soo much class...could listen to this guy play and talk all day.
I like when Eric says, the guitar brings him back to a state of mind, a state of capability.
Watching this man play the ultimate blues is an honor.
He’s a legend no denying it
To me, it’s amazing that the people at Fender get to reverse engineer what they did so many decades ago & the effects that aging had on those works. That must be so much fun. It’s so rare today that we get to focus on quality of work, as all cost.
I'm still flogging that double album to death.
The music at the end makes me emotional...😌
Goodfellas ending
Ending with les paul sound haha
I came to this from the Andy Summers Tribute Telecaster. The Moment when Clapton looks at it with a lump in his throat and says "yeah that'll do". Don't forget Clapton doesnt have "Brownie" anymore - he gave it up. As Andy Summers said "Whern I opened the case, it was like the twilight zone because I knew I'd left it (his original) in the loft at home." I'm sure Clapton feels similar here. It's not the oriiginal but so close as to evoke memories/feelings/life experiences of years long gone. This was/is the "Layla" guitar....
Oh God, the last part of this video made me cry
I was at the EMP when this guitar was on display..... couldn't believe my eyes......a good 15-20 years ago.....
Clapton harks back to a time when music wasn’t just something - it was everything!
ive been furiously looking for a maple neck strat for myself for a weeks now and its hilarious to hear clapton likes it as well
can never go wrong with a maple neck strat, in my opinion they feel incredibly smooth and so good to play
Is Clapton wearing his Patek 2499 platinum here. I can see the moonphase. It would make sense, and the interview is from before he sold it at auction for $3.65 Million. Crazy watch!
The 0:30 mark, now that is some tone!!
I could just sit in front of him and watch and hear him play for days.
having met Seymour Duncan many years ago & listening to his stories , I believe Seymour met Eric & wound some pups for him just prior to Layla being recorded.
I adore the pickup sounds and switching on that strat. I’d swap it in a nanosecond for my 2019 Pro.
Clapton looks really good for his age! And he’s still got it when he picks up that Strat!
For a guy who's been through so much he seems remarkably well adjusted, considering what he reveals in his hair-raising autobiography.
A survivor.
7ender Stratocasters ...The REAL Thing !!
My Favourite Electric guitars , Sound , Look , Feel its Just Perfect
I thought you were dead?
That Tweed-Fender combination tone is to die for..... DO WANT
I have no money to buy these expensive guitars, however, my brother repoed a Harmony "Brownie" Strat copy and its a solid, great sounding guitar! and he gave it to me! I Love It! Hey, it's all about the music not what instruments we play anyhow!
Eric like Trower and Hendrix was born with " Perfect Pitch " a gift of music . Very few people have it .
How do you know?
The dooo
More people have absolute pitch than you’d think, I have relative pitch but it’s close enough since I can recognise most notes immediately, nothing special and nothing really unique
What an honor for these Fender guys.
Eric has never been one of my favourite players BUT he is a great player and icon. Much respect, long live Eric Clapton...
I have just bought myself a fender stratocaster "brownie",my dream guitar 😍
5:34 Jesus painted that guitar. You cannot go wrong.
All the great guitar players that I have known (from the local scene) and there has been a few.. All rate Clapton as their favourite guitar player. I think this is the case all round the world.
That tone is so delicious dude wtff
Eric Clapton is a genius, thanks for a great video 👍🏻
When I turn 72, I would love to be as cool as Eric!
If we turn 72 (sorry for the gallow couldn't help myself)
These dudes are PROS!!!!!! Cant have a finger smudge on it! That could piss somebody off!
And nothing screams like a strat 🎸
Orlando Morales I couldn’t agree more. But they are being filmed so ...
They are just like nokia phones
I think some of you are missing the point. These guys at the FCS are true searchers. They honor the tradition of the Fender company...and another thing; some things in this world are special...worth far more than money. Some things which are created are great...greater even than thier creator in some cases. The search for understanding of what makes something like Blackie,, Bownie, whatever into something which has a soul...this is love of what you do. That is why Fender is tops..100% dedication
i'm watchin this the hundreth time and still the layla solo in the intro is killing me
same here, can i find this solo somewhere else?
Yep Duanne Allman was the man!
Eric Clapton: "Yeah... that'll do."
Probably the cardinal essence of this video.
Never forget The Shadows for the stratocaster : Mr. Hank Marvin !!!
Eric is doing to shows in Copenhagen next year, i wasn’t lucky enough to get tickets. But i still got his videos and music wich i’m happy for.
Beautiful guitar but there's something odd about reproducing all of those nicks and scratches. Those were all earned by Clapton through years of great playing, but the person buying the replica hasn't done the work to earn those signs of passion. They are just paying to not have to do the hard work.
@@Peter-ff1tp lol just wrecked this guy's whole comment
It’s for doctors / lawyers to hang in their office. As fast as attention to detail it’s just the custom shop showing what they can do.
Eric is a guitar hero. One of the GOAT's.
I own 2 guitars, they are not costly.
But they are extension of my body,
They will age with me. I wouldn't do anything to make them look like new again.
Or neither will buy a new guitar and forcefully make it to look like an old one.
it sounds so good... the only reason i would go to the usa would be to go to the Fender shop... the very best thing to come out of the USA
When Clapton says “that’l do”, you best believe IT will do...
A WONDERFUL guitar for a WONDERFUL player who created WONDERFUL music.
How funny would it be if they pulled out a 40 year old baggie of heroin @3:08?
Hahahaha
Probably a replica baggie and reliced spoon is in with the case Candy?
Lol
Or cocaine
Cocaine would be much more fitting...
Around 4:30 Clapton talks about rosewood fretboards and how they feel resistant to bending. I thought I was the only one that felt this way! I've always preferred maple to rosewood for exactly this reason. Maple feels smoother to my fingers.
I wonder how the earlier rosewood fretboards compare to ones made these days as far as how the grain lays flat and doesnt catch like he is discussing.
I wouldn't buy a guitar that looked like a famous one. You can hang it up but it's always in the back of your mind that it's just a copy.
do you mean a signature guitar? because if you dont want one that looks like a famous guitar, your choices are very limited.....
karsaurlong I'm basically saying that I wouldn't buy a guitar that is a copy of the guitar that someone famous used. I like some signature guitars like the ibanez Jem. I guess you could also call the les Paul a signature guitar. Those are fine, I just don't want a guitar that is a clone of what Eric Clapton, Jimmy page, etc played
Alex Leezer ahhh, your an individual with his own identity . That's the way to be!
Good Noodles :)
So if you smack the head stock accidentally and it breaks off, it's a few thousands dollars and not a couple of hundred thousand dollars...
If we all could be so humble
Needless to say, a very pricey Fender Stratocaster - that is, if one is fortunate enough to have the chance of owning one. I use the word, "fortunate", facetiously because personally I'm not too interested. Only a limited run of these guitars that are likely picked up by collectors of whom most wouldn't know how to string the thing or tune it much less play it. Probably end up behind glass in someone's home or office somewhere in Japan. And I lied, by the way. I can't help myself. I'd love to own one.
Eric, listener since must have in the later 60s, THANKS MY MAN, YOU FILL ALOT OF LIVES
He sounds so much like Gary Oldman when he speaks O_O
And looks like him
I am very glad I am not the only one that's noticed this.
Gary oldman sounds like him
If they make a bio pic of clapton they should have Oldman play Oldman clapton
Gary Oldman is English...and has a thick accent....wtf?
Every great guitarist knows his musical tool. Weird to say it that way but that’s what it is to them. It’s their job and that’s what they use. The maple we used to call it a blonde neck. I had an early 70’s rosewood, and loved it.
I'm a huge Eric Clapton fan I also like maple fretboards. they mentioned my favorite Derrick and the Domino's song "It's to late". but unfortunately this is about relic guitars. something that I just can't stand it's dishonest. I believe guitars should get their battle scar's naturally.
