This made me relieved, I felt like Im so bad at training, that i cant teach my dog not to steal. It did not bother me that much, but I fear that it steals something that is toxic for her (it happened before).

So true!!!!! A basenji’s scavenging instinct is so strong. We can’t leave my eldest basenji alone when there is any type of food on the counter. He has a bad habit of dragging things off the table and onto the floor if he can reach it. He even figured out how to open the pedal trash can in the bathroom to get to the makeup remover and other trash and when he gets caught he runs into my bedroom like as if he did nothing wrong. Meanwhile his daughter will just watch him. She likes to watch the crime, while not participating in it. They are so funny.

Trainer here who has a basenji. I think if you are very good at management and not giving sneaky basenjis opportunities to steal, that can work great.
I like to use a camera and set a trap, spy on them, and come in and put them in time out when they think I can’t see because I’m out of the house or the room. It creates the sense that I can see them, even with I’m not with them. Otherwise they know they can just go after the food when I leave the room!
Other times, if this behavior is unsafe and has caused harm to the dog because they’ve eaten something dangerous and this behavior needs to be prevented from happening again for the sake of the dog, I think it is ethical to use aversive methods to prevent further harm to the dog. But this is really something that should only be done with the guidance of a professional to make sure all other methods have been exhausted and the method is applied appropriately.

that is very clever! I tried at some point organising set up with a bunch of noisy items that all fall down when the dog tries to get something from the table, but the scare was not big enough to stop them doing it. many people use water spray bottle but that does not work when you are not around. for now I haven't find a good way how to outsmart my dogs, so we are just managing the environment the best we can 😊

My dog is a big scavenger too. I trained her never to take food from counters though. Unfortunately I used an aversive method. If she ever puts her paws on the counter, I startle her with a clap and loud noise. Then I redirect her to her toys or something else. But I never her leave her alone very long with food on the counter though. So I don't know if it's fool proof or only works when I'm nearby.
But she still eats things on walks though. I try to catch things, but sometimes she sees and eats things before I realize there is food. I think she is just sniffing the grass and the next thing I know she is swallowing something :(

so true! unfortunately you have to decide either to let them sniff on walks so they have an enriched walk, but then you cant always react quickly enough if they pick something, or keep them on a short lead but that is not an enjoyable walk... my female learned to quickly pick something up and just close her mouth straight away as if there is nothing there, and only start chewing when I am not looking at her 😆
