Cracking video Les, excuse the pun, but at 19:00 as 66544s consist passes, you can see massive flexing of the rail, possibly another future development. Thanks again for all your efforts mate.
Why is it that everything falls to bits during something as basic as a broken rail? When I was driving they'd institute single line working over the good line, delays yes but things still ran.
There is a reluctance to operate single line working on this section of WCML. The decreasing number of crossovers doesn't help. Plus Avanti's need to run strictly to schedule south of Preston means they lose interets further north
Well, with cancellations and chaos, definitely not as many trains to film, but still a fun video. Lots of TPE today and some nice new gondola/flatbeds in shiny yellow (for now). I am curious as to how the broken track was identified. It does not sound like anyone derailed, which is good.
Glad you enjoyed it. Cancellation situations are actually harder to record since you want the last train running and first afterwards! Plus all the odd workings between
great video Les some nice catches there matey , and yes your right it does'nt take Avanti long to start canceling trains they are rubbish many thanks stay safe a t b Syd
Bad day over all there let’s hope 70009 stays on the tanks would love a catch of that next week when I come up. Let’s hope the railway will be more forgiving on Monday for my trip up. Good video once again considering the broken rail problems
@@LeslieGilpinRailways knowing Carlisle it will chuck up some unexpected things like it does going to take a pit stop at Warrington on the way over to have a break and catch a couple of moves there too
18:00 - how long before these lovely, bright yellow wagons become less pristine? 20:00 - a perfect example of 'Garbage in, Garbage out'. 22:00 - with Avanti's cavalier attitude to its passengers, I suppose that showing any destination is good enough. 23:00 - perhaps the power supply people reckoned that the catenary over Road 'B' needed a good scrape. All-in-all definitely NOT your standard day, Les.
Just another day for Carlisle. I worked there after leaving school in 1971 and it was chaos then with many cancelled services and delays. New rolling stock never seems to improve anything. Back in the 70's it was falling apart, electrification an a new PSB just brought more issuse to solve.
The important thing is that problems are handled professionally. Whilst the station and PSB staff do their best, the Train Operator's management seem to revert to type. I understand why Avanti must maintain schedule south of Preston but they just abandon things any further north
@@LeslieGilpinRailways I agree, but try telling an irate passenger that only wants to get from A to B at least on the same day. The whole system relies heavly on equipment that can and does fail without any warning, leaving the techs with the thankless task of keeping it all working with whatever comes to hand. After 9 years of working all hours in dangerous conditions i changed my career, yet once you are a railway worker it stays with you for life.
Yet another great video Les. I’d like to ask you a question if I may please. How come on @RealTimeTrains it states most days that there is a freight train in the schedule running from Carlisle Kingmoor V.Q to Humberstone Rd (Leicester, which is local to me near Narborough). To the best of my knowledge it hasn’t been activated or run in a couple of years!?
Thanks! RTT reflects what is in the Working Timetable. There are numerous paths either Run as Required or even timed but have never run. My favourite is Oxwellmains to Brunstock (off Carlisle Yard) which hasn't run for many years
@@LeslieGilpinRailways got back to Preston it was absolute chaos. No one knew what train was going where. 3 trains on the board all advertised as platform 3 London, Glasgow and Edinburgh. People getting on then back off. Preston's a nightmare when it goes wrong and several trains are terminated at the same time.
All they had to do was use Locos based at Carnforth run round the Cumbrian coast line! No need to delay trains from Leeds as they're on a separate line! Doesn't anyone know how to run a railway anymore? On a positive and humourous note for a minute I thought a Northern DMU was pulling in a Tesco train brilliant!
A three hour journey instead of 40 minutes? And then if the stock was in gauge (a lot of DMUs arent)? Plus it all has to meet the very high density timetable south of Preston and Crewe. Thanks
@@billmmckelvie5188 forgot to add, nothing spare at Carnforth will have the correct couplings. Any thunderbird locos they have are on the WCML for network rail
@LeslieGilpinRailways Thanks Les if it is mechanically possible either with a pair of class 43s TNT a train with or without connecting coaches, to take it to 125mph speed. That isn't happening on the Cumbrian circuit. Do you think there is a higher proportion of permanent way failures in the Carlisle area compared to other parts of the network? I have a perception that there are? Is it time to quadruple the track between Preston to Carlisle, since HS2 has been cancelled?
Another example of what happens when advanced tech is not used. Two direction track running can be seen with the TESCO train but investment is needed to allow a full system of two direction on each track running.
@@cd66061 It is what the German, Swiss and Austrian railways have. Every 10 km or less there is a pair of track speed or near crossings one leading, one trailing. Plus signaling for travel in both directions on each line. There are parts in the UK ECML that this can happen but is limited. So equipment failure can be bye-past either by running a convoy system or taking turns through the remaining single track section.
Great Eastern Mainline has 'reverse running' signals in some parts. To allow trains to bypass broken down trains or track problems. Only witnessed it once. Carlisle is full bi-directional signalled. Along with many stations.
@@briancooper562 the uk has many sections of bi-directional track. On sections where there are no bi-directional areas, there are crossovers so that wrong directional emergency working can take place, as incidents such as this broken track do happen. Single line working obviously slows the network down but allows the passage of traffic. Unfortunately it appeared that they had to shut both the Up and Down lines where the broken track was so they could safely access and repair the track, so nothing at all could pass. Like I said, I’ve no idea what you mean about the Tesco container train (DRS ran service) had to do with this.. I think Les showed it as being over 5 hours late. The majority of passenger services were stopped at the stations prior to the incident (between Carlisle and Penrith) and terminated so that they could bus passengers passed the incident, then those trains were mainly turned back in the other direction. They couldn’t just leave the passengers on them for hours on end. And the train crews also have breaks, driving hours to consider, and homes to get to as they have the next day’s shifts to get to, with a certain number of rest hours in between shifts for safety reasons. It’s not nearly as black & white as most people think, it’s not in anyone’s interest to just park up and do nothing.
After that chaos all I can say is ...Hats off to the people you never see for re organising things so quickly. Thanks Les.

All the tracks through the station are bidirectional, I think
