      Will a bad sensor cause the truck to shake stutter and won't accelerate from slow or stop to go? It runs fine when I floor it but in the city stop and go makes it want to stall out but doesn't but it won't accelerate until I floor it. Could a bad o2 sensor do this?

      No, it got worse. I have a 2014 Town and Country van. It's started out that the engine light can on, I did a scan and it said to replace the Cadlic converter. Then after it said to replace the oxygen sensors on the converter. Now the dash lights and on, no blinkers, heated seats don't work, no speedometer, no mileage, no gas signal. Not sure what it is, costing me allot of money just to figure it out. If I clean out the tipm, or replace it, do I have to reset the computer? Plus the lead on the ECMS looks like it might not be on correctly. Could that be the cause???

    P0402 is your catalytic converter,some mechanics may tell you it's your 02 sensor so once you let them replace it and then your check engine light comes back on you will be kicking yourself in the butt for listening to him so the first thing you should do is bring it to advanced Auto parts or Auto zone and they will use their obd reader and it will show the code then you can Google it and it will tell you what is wrong with your car,it will also tell you if your battery,starter,or alternator is bad good luck

    Just a tip, replace O2 sensors with the OEM unit your car came with from the facotory. Aftermarket units do not always work in some vehicles. GM is notorious for this. I know, I just installed a Bosch unit in my GM, when replacing the exhaust system, it tripped a code. Replaced with ACDelco O2 sensor, no more code, car idling smooth again.
    On edit: The reason a Bosch O2 sensor wound up in my vehicle is that I had an exhaust installed, and it needed a new O2 sensor, Bosch was all that was readily available at the time of the install. If not for that, an OEM sensor would have been installed.

    • @davidweum

      What is an OEM price to an aftermarket part price,% ball park? I once shopped for an OEM part (Blend Door Actuator for a 98 Honda). There was only one in all of Canada (Toronto, of course) that was 6 times more expensive than an Aftermarket, Chinese part.

    • @michaelwright1602
      @michaelwright1602 Год назад +1

      @@davidweum That particular OEM part you tried to source, that is the dealer raping the customer. Almost all do that today, you really need to research and shop around, which it sounds like you did.
      And funny you mention Honda, and aftermarket parts, I have a few stories on that one, what a nightmare. Had to pay the vig, as the aftermarket parts were of such poor quality and fit, I had no other choice than to go OEM, 2008 Civic of all things.
      But, certain parts, many times the best, or only alternative is aftermarket. Blend door actuators being one, I am very familiar with those, both OEM and aftermarket. I normally use Dorman, they have upped their quality as of late, moving from a Chinese manufacturer to a South Korean one.
      Sensors though, those are critical use items. That is mainly what I am speaking of, those computer related items that are supposed to be built to certain specs at an acceptable quality and function level. As I stated above, I have never had any luck with aftermarket sensors.
      As far as cost, much will depend on your vehicle. I drive, by choice, a 2003 Buick Park Avenue for the very reason it was a GM build that spanned many years and many many models. Parts are readily available and there is a ton of old new stock floating around out here, so even a genuine OEM part price in many cases is on par with the aftermarket price, and some times even less. But, I understand where you are coming from, and it is a quite reasonable position.
      Myself, I mainly work and wrench in the class 8 diesel world on my own and friends trucks. If you think car parts are expensive, play with this stuff for awhile. A once $50 Intake Manifold Pressure sensor is now well over $100, the Exhaust Back Pressure sensor went from $80 something to near $200. These are two critical parts on a Cummins and these dealers are very proud of their pricing, oh I have stories. We call them stealerships for good reason.
      For parts, eBay, Amazon and Rock Auto are my main suppliers for the automotive side. The diesel side, not much choice there, OEM for most everything.

After driving for approximately 10 to 20 miles the check engine light came back on with the same codes for all 3 sensors. I have a 93 Chevy Silverado 5.7 engine The idle is completely smooth it runs absolutely fine but randomly as you're driving it will stall out I will shut off the emissions switch started back up immediately and it will run fine again sometimes for two or three days sometimes for a couple hours and then it will shut off again Acts like it's losing throttle when it happens no check engine lights I understand it can be several sensors that causes this trying to narrow it down if you have any information to help I would appreciate it thank you it's a 5.7 engine two-wheel drive with a L60E transmission thanks again

    • @pinoyrunningpenguin

      Usually it is not just a sensor issue. It is a clogged up catalytic converter, and/or an exhaust leak in the flanges or the connection between the catalytic converter and the pipe that goes to the exhaust manifold. The sensor's get damaged when you got exhaust leak at the exhaust is hot and it damages the wires.

    Thank you, a very interesting and informative video.
    I had a question on something I had been speculating on regarding the possible effect of the accumulation of carbon on the O2 sensor's probe. Assuming that the voltage generated by the probe is proportional to the oxygen concentration difference between the exhaust gas and the outside air, then a lean mixture, more oxygen in the exhaust, would result in a smaller voltage signal to the computer and so the computer would respond by richening the mixture. Would a layer of carbon on the ceramic surface of the probe tip inhibit the diffusion of oxygen through the probe and result in an anomalously low voltage reading that the computer would interpret as a lean running engine and thus overly richen it? Would we then see this effect as the gradual darkening, accumulation of soot, on the insides of the exhaust tips?
    If this is the case, would you see this as a sign that maybe it was time to replace the oxygen sensors?

    • @MechanicBase
      @MechanicBase  Год назад

      Hey, yes, that's definitely a possibility. Which engine do you have? If it has two banks (i.e. a V6 or V8), you can swap sensors and see what's happening with the readings.

    • @videomaniac108
      @videomaniac108 Год назад

      @@MechanicBase Thanks for the input. The car is a 370Z with the VQ37VHR engine, a V-6 that is hitting 45k miles and is in excellent running condition. I just noticed that the insides of my exhaust tips are starting to show a little carbon residue (soot) now, whereas the tips would run with virtually no residue on them when the engine was new. I'm using no noticeable amount of oil, as indicated on the dipstick at the end of my 3k mile oil change interval.
      The engine is running smoothly and quietly with good response and power. My guess is that maybe the engine is now running a little richer than the stoichiometric ratio because of a little carbon buildup on the upstream sensors. I'm thinking of maybe having both upstream sensors replaced.

    The correct fix for an 02 sensor is replace the entire exhaust system. Parts are cheap , sensors are cheap. And just simply replacing the 02 sensor will not fix the problem of an exhaust leak and a clogged catalytic converter, rusted bolts , rusted exhaust pipes. You will spend more money doing installment install because labor is expensive.
