i was the same early on, i thought social distancing was important and that food was a possible vector, but i was under no illusions that masks have any effect on viral transmission after living in japan for over 20 years and observing every flu season personally as well as all the studies that showed no effect (that were taken down for "relevancy issues" when the pandemic hit).
through the pandemic we learned that social distancing really didn't do much but that room ventilation (or even better, being outside) did a lot, and that covid did not spread via food. i adjusted my opinions and behavior accordingly starting from when it became apparent. it's natural not to know everything from the start, and we shouldn't be upset at people for following what were the most reasonable assumptions at first, but we absolutely should hold to account those who downplay evidence contrary to their first-held beliefs.

We had the same phenomenon in Australia. Here’s my take. …..public health attracts the dullest medical graduates They are conformists who revel in their structured work places. But every now and again they are thrust into the spotlight. The media pursues them. Politicians hang on their utterances .its giddy times.
When asked advice on matters they don’t have evidence for , rather than admitting ignorance, they double down with a feigned certainty.
This is how we were misled by some of the dopiest doctors posing as savants.

IMO, it was a case of the emperor's new clothes. Just about everyone went along with it, particularly (and shockingly for me) among the educated middle class. I can count on the fingers on one hand the people I know who remotely questioned any of this. Most of the people I know are scientists. Their BS antennae should have kicked off immediately with the 'follow the science' mantra. But they didn't and the people were the worst offenders for spouting the nonsense at me. Still shocks me to think of it. Only one, thanks to being Jewish, has had cause to open her eyes to it all.
They weren't wrong, and they weren't incompetent. They were saboteurs for hire.
The theory explains the compliance, but it was all seeded, or nudged, in a certain direction. It’s like the genius getting caught out deliberately trying to fail a multi-choice test. If you were truly dumb you’d on average get 25% through pure guessing. But to get 0% is an indication of deliberate failure.

For sure the pharmaceutical industry made huge profits but their stocks are collapsing now. How can we change this for the better in future? Walensky was always the one that bothered me the most. Something about her patronizing smile as she obfuscated over and over again, got to be really annoying. I could never tell whether her presentation was completely calculated, or if she just really lacked the critical thinking ability of your average 5th grader. Perhaps a combination.
When the 6 feet rule come ti Sweden., people just REFUSED to follow it. There was basically nobody in the whole country that was following that rule. People just ignored the markings in the floor. It was so bad so they had to remove the marking only 2 or 3 days after they was put down... and move them out to 2 meter, a distance that people could accept, if still a bit claustrophobic.

It was not so much that they lied to us, but that they did not care what happens when the truth is found out that they lied. No thought to the fact that we are never going to believe them ever again on any subject. Hell is too good for these people.

I'm partial to the idea of getting rid of CDC, FDA, and NiH. But I also suspect that this is very much what the pharma companies would want. They need to be radically overhauled, with conflicts of interest removed. No more revolving door. And the architects of this mess need to be held accountable.

The 6ft social distancing was arbitrary from the beginning. Even the movie Contagion inserted the same baseless protocol the film. Which by the way, the CDC had a helping hand in advising the filmmaking of what policies they'd likely carry out amongst a global pandemic.
How do you explain that flu all but disappeared? Surely it's due in a large part to the control measures.
They picked 6 feet because it's basically the most accurate, far enough distance that most people can understand without a tape measure. Wasn't based on any science. Was designed to increase unhappiness in society.
It’s funny. I remember reading a paper in the summer of 2020 from MIT math dept which was supposed to be the progenitor of the 6’ or around 2m. The study was a theoretical time it would take for a covid sized particle to fall, under the effects of gravity minus aero drag, under normal walking speed by around 2’. I remember reading it and being surprised that it assumed perfectly calm air, no currents - which far overpower gravity effects. Later there was an addendum when they started to consider atmospheric effects, the number turned into like 20m or 60’, through probabilistic analysis and something analogous to plume dispersion in environmental engineering. I didn’t hear any more talk of the study after that… 60’ is kinda far and not very useful for lining up…
As nonsense as that all was, it made more sense than goofy masks…
It’s a far enough distance to sound plausible that it might be of benefit, while still allowing you to go to buy groceries. Any actually useful distance would have meant shopping was virtually impossible.

Cloth masks seemed to me to be an obvious breeding ground for bacteria - warm, damp, plenty of gas exchange opportunities.

It is so disgusting what the leaders did. They "believed" certain things and made policy for over 300 million people. It is understandable that they were in a tough spot. Date coming out at the time showed a mortality rate of about 2% and any error on their part could have led to lots of people dying, so they erred on the side of caution. They were under the impression that slowing the spread could help delay things until a vaccine could be produced (and they mistakenly believed/predicted that vaccine would have a very high efficacy). A tough spot, to be sure. But the part that is disgusting was the shut-down of dialog. That is was my way period.

A story from Roswell, NM that made national news was of a then 10 year old boy who would do his online school lessons outside of his school building because he needed the wifi. In cold weather in winter. That boy showed more grit and courage than a huge swath of the adult population. Particularly in NM where it seemed so many people would try to hide under Governor Grisham's skirt as if that was where they knew they'd be wholly safe from Covid.
