    I bought a pressure canner that sat on the shelf for months 'cause I was afraid to use it. My 18 year old grandson was visiting and I told him about the canner. "What could you can today?" he asked. Together, we canned 3 half pint jars of green beans. He hadn't ever canned before but just read the directions and we followed them. Now, I love the song of the canning kettle.
    Your larder is lovely! Lots of hard work. Lots of healthy food. Yay!!!

    Oh my Gosh! You guys I love your basement with all of the wooden shelves and canned goods! 😍 Brenda I think canning is so addicting and making a huge resurgence. I love canning especially in the winter time by making soup and bone broth which warms up the house. There’s something special about making something homemade and knowing what is exactly in the food that you preserve
    We have an 1860s farmhouse in Maryland and have a similar basement with exposed stone walls and root cellar. They did a lot of cooking at one time in our basement at an open hearth fireplace. I would love to make my canned goods area similar to yours! It is so beautiful.

    • @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764
      @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764  Год назад +1

      I agree that canning seems to be making a resurgence...probably partly spurren on by the shortage of food during the pandemic. I think that anyone who gets into it enjoys the sense of security and peace of knowing you have food and that you know what is in it.
      Wow, I'd love to see pics of your place. I LOVE old houses. Is the open hearth fireplace still visible? Do you use the root cellar? We hope to have our functioning by next year. (there are a few issues with temp, ventilation and radonn.)
      Thanks for watching!

    My mom canned for over 70 years and always left the rings on without any problems. Sometimes a jar wouldn’t seal and that’s normal and she would either serve that jar at the next meal or try again with a new lid which normally took care of the problem or it was a bad jar.
    She opened some of her mother’s canned food one time that was sitting for about thirty years with the rings on and she said it wasn’t spoiled and tasted normal.
    Sometimes the rings will get rusty and be hard to remove and that will be a problem if stored in an un-airconditioned space like a back porch, garage, or outdoor pantry like my grandmother had.
    Another concern is that rings will hide an unsealed jar but you can easily detect this by making sure the lid doesn’t pop up when you press it and actually smell the contents of the jar before using.
    Sometimes my mom would take the rings off because she didn’t have enough to finish canning with, so after one batch of lids had set and sealed, she would carefully remove the rings to use in the next batch and repeat this process until she was done or had gone to the store to pick up new rings.

    • @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764
      @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764  11 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah generations before us did many times that they now say we shouldn't do and they never had a problem. I just feel safe knowing that if a lid comes unsealed for some reason I would know.
      I love canning and having food on hand. The newer generations have lost so many of those skills. Hopefully there will continue to be a resurgence.
      Thanks for watching!

I live in my husbands home which was built in 1876. {He unexpectedly passed away in his sleep this pass June.} Our wood burning furnace and natural gas furnace is in the basement. Wow this is AMAZING!!! I have to tell you my self doubt was like “Boy I wish I could do that, but I bet she’s been doing it her whole life, and I’m too old to start (61) 😞”. Then your mic drop 🎤 at the end! Wow! Seriously you just started to can and farm 3 years ago?! I’m blown away! Kudos to you, you both should be so proud of your accomplishments. You are amazing stewards with the land and what Gods given you, I particularly like how you shared your family shops in your lard. I have a question 🙋‍♀️ were you always in such good shape? I feel so weak these days, but I know I need to turn things around.

    • @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764
      @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764  Год назад +11

      Yep, we bought the farm 3 years ago and we've been learning more every day. I've always gardened, but it was on a very small scale. I can't believe how much fun we are having. Yes, it's a lot of work, but we enjoy it. Our kids are all local so it makes it very convenient for them to help as well as share in the bounty. We are VERY grateful for the blessing of this farm.
      As for being in shape, I'm not as strong as I was in my younger years, but I'm learning that I have to work even harder at this age to maintain strength. Last spring when the heavy gardening started I was suprised by how much strength I had lost over winter, but by the end of summer I had gained much of it back. I need to try to work at maintaining some of that this winter.
      Thanks for watching and best of luck if you get in to canning. It's addictive.

      Hi Heidi, 61 is not too old it is prime time of your life. That's when you go forward with life. My daughter is a personal trainer and yes I am lucky but she trains me 2 days a week to keep me fit with balance. Keep moving. Follow your heart and don't ever think 61 is too old. I'm heading towards 62. Start gardening in pots like for instance tomatoes,peppers. If you don't have the equipment to can then freeze. Take care and try something and then make you feel good

    Nice larder. We moved from our beautiful old farmhouse in the suburbs and I wasn’t into canning like I am now. The people who owned the house before we bought it were evidently die hard canners and it was set up with even a Griswold burner so they canned down in the basement too. There was tons of shelving built just perfect for the jars with the really old wood. I would kill to have that set up now. 🥲 Thanks for sharing.

    I’m so glad this came up in my suggestions. My dream is to buy a small property and start a homestead. I taught myself how to water bath can in 2017 and pressure can in 2020…I haven’t stopped since. Even though I’m not currently growing my own food, I buy organic and in bulk as much as possible. One of our favorite things I water bath is pineapple and our top 4 pressure canned foods are chicken soup, ugly chicken, taco meat and beef stew (it’s soup that I thicken). This video got a subscribe from me. I’m excited to go back and learn through your experience. God bless 🙏🏼💕

I definitely have all of the canned goods in equal quantities as you… But with the teenage kids still at home… and their stuff everywhere….my larder gets crammed into a tiny spot in the basement lol! I keep reminding myself I will be sad when they are gone… so not to wish them out the door too quickly… 🥲 But I hope…as you have…that they will stay close to home and continue to come back to my larder to glean.🥰 Thanks for sharing your inspirational space!

    What a beautiful room! You've done an amazing job! Especially in such a short time, you have accomplished a lot. What I have started doing to store empty jars is to put them, clean with new lids, next to the full ones as I go through the full ones (I go left to right as I put empty jars in, so that I can see them and get them out easily) but I fill them from back to front, with the oldest batches up front to be used first. It's a little fiddly, but it helps me keep it all tidy throughout the year. My goal has been to keep most of my jars full, because they take up the same amount of space whether they are full or not. I like to have about a canner load of every type of jar empty and available at any given time in case a random glut of produce appears. This way I have permanently dedicated space that doesn't fluctuate too much. By summertime more of them are empty, but also ready to use.

    Hello from Ontario, Canada. I know the feeling of showing my pantry to friends…..a great sense of accomplishment, I am into canning, pressure canning, dehydrating, fermenting and freeze drying. ( I have done workshops in fermentation) I consider myself a farmer without a farm…..we live in the suburbs and squeeze as much space into fruit , berry and veg gardens along with a greenhouse and an indoor microgreen/salad green room for growing in the house. If you are ever in the Niagara area, feel free to pop over!!! Beautiful pantry and keep up the great work. I agree, I am my happiest when I am in my kitchen

I love canning too and growing my garden and preserving though I live in the city so I have to buy my meats and some veggies but at least I know what is in them which is so important today. I can't wait for spring to start growing again, every year I learn to grow new things.. I bought kale seeds from Bakers Creek last fall and Wow they grew huge and just now died with the heavy snow we got here in Ohio. Anna In Ohio
