The point is, Afro hair isn’t a style, like spikes/tattoos or any other chosen way of presenting. It’s a natural hair texture that only black people posses. It would be like saying blondes or red-heads aren’t allowed - that wouldn’t be a policy, that’s discrimination towards a particular group. And if it’s an old policy, it may well be a legacy from a time when racism was overt and the norm. Which would make it a racist policy.

As a intelligent Black male from the United States, I don't blame the brotha from the United Kingdom of England wanting to be himself to keep his afro hairstyle and also want to pursue a career at the Ritz hotel in London, England. I think it is discriminatory and also racist to put a person of color down and reject him to get a job of choice because of his hairstyle or his image. The public eye can be really cruel, shrewd, and calloused at times regardless of a person's skin color, personality, and also hairstyle. Whatever happened to equal opportunity of employment? That happens all around the planet Earth. Not only in the United States but in the UK as well. Jarell Jules, keep your head up brotha man from the United Kingdom, don't be labeled by the public because of your skin color or hairstyle. U are being yourself and not only that u are being proud to be a Black Man from merry old England, u are Black and proud and be proud of your Black heritage and also the hairstyle either afro or dreadlocks, hell I don't care if u have a long beard, it is your body, your choice. U talking to a brotha man from the United States of America, u shouldn't be ashamed of your image nor personality as long as u got God in your heart and a humble soul. The public eye can label us because of image and also personality. But as the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr once said we should not be judged by the color of a person's skin but content of character. Only the Almighty One Himself can judge Us. Not all men are created equal all people are created equal and united as one. Self love is the best love, don't be labeled by the public eye because u can't wear your hair a certain way, that's putting down a person's character to grow and be successful. Success equals growth. The Good Lord made u for what u are, u are a phenomenal and humble human being and be proud just being honest and being yourself. Enough said.
Be yourself👍.....just not at The Ritz. The Ritz isn't there to fall into line with how people look, it's there to those who wish to fall in line with how it wants its staff AND guests to look and anyone applying for a job there should be smart enough to know that. If anyone turns up to The Ritz in ripped jeans and a t-shirt and tries to get a table at one of their restaurants, they'd be disallowed. They'd be politely told the dress code and rejected. Same with employees, so get with the programme and leave this perpetual racism dialogue out of it. If you like to quote Dr MLK, perhaps take note of the way he dressed and presented himself. He wore a suit, cut his hair and looked the part. He'd have got a job a The Ritz.
"As an intelligent black man" then proceeds to show that he knows nothing about this country or its customs. This is not America, nobody was dragged here kicking and screaming and we do not have to conform to every lazy, race grifter going. Being expected to look neat for a prestigious job is not racism.
Agree. Am I the only one thinking this but this would not even be an issue under discussion if the wording ‘no spiky hair, no Afro’ was not even mentioned in the job advert. The Ritz can shortlist and / or appoint whoever they want and make that decision internally without openly making these comments as a stipulation of their job requirements. That has happened for decades and must still go on today. Millions of us have applied for jobs in our lives and will never find out what the real reasons were why we were never successful even if we thought we were perfect for that job because we are never privy to the discussion that goes on after you leave the interview room.
If you have an Afro and the policy says we don’t employ people with......why would he go???? He’s not even given a chance to have cropped or manicured hair ... I call that a Racist policy!
@@patthewoodboy ok, racist. 'Take, for example, “playing the race card” - one of their favoured phrases. I didn’t know I had any such cards until I began to educate myself about racism in Britain. But it seems that when I thought I was offering either a structural or personal analysis of how racism has affected black people’s lives, what I was actually doing was merely playing cards. Yet these magical cards don’t actually work. When we use them, the argument then turns from a sensible discussion into a shouting match. If this is supposed to be winning, it doesn’t feel much like victory. [...] The real point about race cards is that claiming their existence is itself deeply racist. The idea first seems to have entered the lexicon in the 1960s, when “the race card” was used to describe the ways in which rightwing politicians weaponised fears about black people to gain votes - such as the 1964 Conservative parliamentary candidate for Smethwick reportedly warning his prospective constituents: “If you want a n***** for a neighbour, vote Labour.” These days, it is more frequently deployed to delegitimise the voices of people on the receiving end of those narratives. Either way, the one consistent thing seems to be that it always involves setting up people of colour to lose.' ---Afua Hirsch
It's because black people's had naturally grows into an afro so it's basically like having a policy that said straight hair isn't aloud and you have to have an afro white people would be discriminated against in that instance because white people's hair grows downwards and black people's hair grows upwards.
They mean you can't let your hair grow to a big afro style - what's wrong with that? They're saying you need to cut your hair short. I don't see how that's racist? They're not saying 'any type of black hair is banned'. I understand black hair grows up, but an afro is cultivating a style - they don't want that style. White people can't spike their hair - that's a style. So if your hair's tufty and spiky, you need to cut it short. I'm white, but my hair's extremely kinky and grows out, not up, so they'd tell me to cut it. The Ritz is a wealthy hotel - they don't want you looking like Ike Turner or Sid Vicious while working there. What's the problem? Stop looking for racism.
I think they mean by afro they mean like huggy bear style but hey if they dress smart and be polite and do their jobs properly I don't think people should about the hair
He said it himself it’s a wording issue, it’s probably more to do with length, since they the also ban white hair that is too long, you can’t go in wearing super long hair or a Mohican for example. Essentially Afro hair needs to be understood as a hair type not a hairstyle.
Absolute madness. If I grew my hair or beard long as a male and decided not to maintain it I wouldn't expect a luxury hotel to hire me either. Women with certain hair colour dyes.. I have male pattern baldness and wouldn't expect them to hire me if the sides of my head were grown without shaving it. Private business is entitled to have their own preferred look
'...and decided not to maintain it'........ Are you implying an afro is not maintained? You clearly have no idea just how much time and effort goes into maintaining one. But that doesn't surprise me.
Many places have grooming policies the mistake made here is to single a hairstyle instead they should say that for male staff the hair should be kept short. No more than however many inches high and so many inches long. For many white people, many British white people for sure, an afro is some 1960s leftover. What if a young woman has natural hair that's a small afro is that still not allowed? The policy shows a lack of thoughtfulness as much as any other thing. P.S. Your country's nostalgia is killing itself.
"Keeping Black people out of the best jobs.." they say. So there are people on Earth who would rather keep their afro than make thousands of dollars per year? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard
Why keep asking why...its your race that has a problem with the Afro Go ask them why ? ... I personal think the Ritz mean not messy or overall over the top, if that's what they mean.
The problem is a lack of respect, understanding, and appreciation of the black race. Policies are made out of pure ignorance sometimes too, not just intentional discrimination. It would be like telling other races with naturally straight hair (or hair that naturally hangs down) that their hair must be in an afro in order to conform to policy. That is how it sounds to black people. Imagine those other races having to wear an afro wig or using some cancer causing chemicals to get their hair in an 'acceptable' state in order to be accepted. Put yourself in another person's shoes in order to understand why this is such a big issue.

Many companies don't allow staff to show off their tattoos. If that is the company's policy, then don't apply for the job. Same goes for the hair. Companies are not discriminating against anybody just because they have certain standards that should be applied by their staff. Many companies don't allow you to turn up in jeans. They want you to look professional, and quite right too.
I don’t have to manipulate my hair for it to be in an Afro. That is its most natural state. That’s is literally how it grows out of my head. The spikes need to be manipulated and styled to be spikes. It’s a style choice. But deciding to be natural and not manipulate my hair means I can’t work for some jobs…which is crazy to me! I don’t think the discrimination is intentional or malicious, I just think people don’t realize what they are saying when they tell people Afros aren’t allowed. @Kuliet Sanchez that's what's wrong with the world. People freak out over the dumbest stuff and use one word versus the other. Forever to have a job at a fancy place, you are required to shave and have a close haircut if you're a man of any race. If you have a problem with the "wording" about grooming, then that's probably not a place you should work. I'm pretty sure they were just giving examples of long hair styles not permitted at the job. I don't think this is racist it just makes sense. I have a dress code at my job where I have to wear a button-up shirt and pants. During the summer I don't want to wear it but I still have to because it's a requirement for the job. If I didn't like it that much, we all have the free will to leave and find another job. However, in my experience, all high paying jobs require some type of dress code, including hair styles and clothing.

Our hair is a different texture and composition to yours. An afro is our hair in its natural state, and cutting it off isn't as simple for us, because of how our hair grows.
When you apply for a job you have to consider dress and grooming codes. I am sure that if he had gotten a haircut, he would have been fine, like a person of any race. Afro does not mean natural, it means a big hairdo. That does not work in a conservative atmosphere like the Ritz. When my sons went for a job interview, they had to get haircuts.
This has to be the dumbest comment I’ve seen. An Afro is not a big hair do especially his length of Afro. If a black personn grows their hair out for many years like how white people do then that is how it can look. So for you to say a “big hair do” is completely stupid because as an African person this is how my hair and his hair grow. I don’t “do it up” when ritz says they don’t want spiky hair fair enough because you have to physically change the appearance of your hair to achieve that to get huge spikes. You don’t have to have a low cut to have a ‘conservative hair cut’ what about people with man buns or curtains why don’t they cut their hair to become conservative. Your logic makes no sense and it’s clear that you don’t understand. And as for your boys unless their black they and you cannot relate. And judging solely by your second name I have suspicion to think you may not be black
"Afro-hairstyle" literally means afro hairstyle... What the hell are u on about? There was nothing here about length. You're also failing to realize that black women with any kind of length, will naturally have the same hairstyle you're saying "does not work in a conservative atmosphere"; You're part of the problem.
There is nothing wrong with his hair. Dont white men wear their hair long. Your comment obviously tells me you have been forced into a mould.Must be tough for you to live like that, No?
Georgia dear, thw problem isn't haircut, the problem is the wording. They shouldnhave said "no busy hair", not afro, which is targeted to a specific race. Hope you now understand.
Where in the Grooming Policy does it explicitly refer to Black people ? It doesn't. He failed to consider that white people can also naturally have "afro" hair. He _chose_ to be offended by something innocuous, as have many black people before him. The irony is that, had he attended the final interview, he would probably have got the job as his hair is well within the guidelines.
U sound goofy as hell.... Saying "no afro-hairstyle's" is synonymous with "no black hairstyles" since literally ALL black people have afro hairstyle u pinecone. I've never in my 34 years of living ever seen a white person with a naturally afro-like hair texture, but guess what... Every single black person I know has afro textured natural hair. The irony is that your entire comment is exactly why the policy is discriminatory. If this man was a woman, he'd likely have longer hair and therefore his natural hair would be a problem. For some reason white people feel afro textured hair (aka black natural hair)is unfit for a classy environment and that is the problem.

All true. Apply for another job elsewhere if you don’t want to conform to their policies.

UK is far more racist than USA and UK cops just as corrupt
if you dont attend the interview , why would you get the job , its that simple.
That’s not the issue.

Either way, the one consistent thing seems to be that it always involves setting up people of colour to lose.'

It's because black people's had naturally grows into an afro so it's basically like having a policy that said straight hair isn't aloud and you have to have an afro white people would be discriminated against in that instance because white people's hair grows downwards and black people's hair grows upwards.
Middle aged white guy asking a black guy why are we so racist 😂😂
There is a difference between spiking hair and growing out an afro
I think they mean by afro they mean like huggy bear style but hey if they dress smart and be polite and do their jobs properly I don't think people should about the hair
He said it himself it’s a wording issue, it’s probably more to do with length, since they the also ban white hair that is too long, you can’t go in wearing super long hair or a Mohican for example. Essentially Afro hair needs to be understood as a hair type not a hairstyle.

You are literally saying “the way you were born and the way your hair grows out of your head is unacceptable! You need to change your natural state of being!”
That’s the issue here I think!

@Kuliet Sanchez that's what's wrong with the world. People freak out over the dumbest stuff and use one word versus the other.
I didn't see that they stipulated the hair length, so why are they apologising and not confirming what they meant?
Now your playing dumb...

I don’t think it was really bad thing, I think it was a very outdated clause in the Requirements...I thought you looked very Dapper and smart, If was a big posh hotel..I wouldn’t have hesitated to offer you the job reguardless of your hairstyle, it’s really about doing the job, In a£shop, rich people come to our shops, and at first they came in to mock basically, but don’t you fear I’ve seen many of rich peoples homes from “ OK” magazine etc with a £ Vase on the table, trays, kitchen stuff, throws, wooden gold giraffes. Buddha’s..the list goes on..As long as you can do the job, if you have long hair etc, as long as it’s tidy for work, what really is the problem...in that line of work it’s part of the job to look smart and presentable..As in that trade more so..than other jobs..You were probably over qualified for the job...if they couldn’t look past your haircut, well why would YOU want to work for them-Good luck to you..🙏🌹🍒
I find Richard now a pain sorry ax
People just want to be a victim!! My God 🙄
Are you stupid. How is this player bf victim. If you think because his natural hair is not professional I think want to look in the mirror Cus what you’ll see is a racist. In what way is natural hair that is combed unprofessional. And in what way does him complaining that they are openly discriminating against his hair type mean he’s playing victim. Shame on you.
Bless ya 🙏🍒
@@karinadebbage5452 Bless your heart 😏I’m just speaking the truth!!!
Don't know you, but if you have straight hair and was shortlisted for a good job, then found out you must wear your hair in an afro in order to be hired, would that make sense? Or if you were born with natural blonde hair but were told your hair must be red or a brunette in order to work there, how you would feel? It sounds stupid, these examples, but so does discrimination and ignorance when it comes to black hair. If you are someone who's hair grows in an afro, however, I would assume you've never been denied a job because of your natural hair. Anyone who has experienced this knows the painful feeling inside that wants to make you feel like you are less, and it seems the world is trying to tell you God made a mistake on you that must be corrected. No one wants to be this kind of victim, believe me.
@@fancyfox2075 yep I don’t know you either, But if you read my Comment properly you would see I wasn’t making any kind of racist remarks, It Was an out dated comment of the 90s...23 years ago!!!, It’s not a personal attack on people of race..Many many Countries people are born with naturally curly hair...You can’t really say for instance “Oh she wouldn’t get the job because she’s Spanish with curly hair “...Maybe the man wasn’t right for the job, And didn’t like it...Maybe I will say it Again, Maybe he was over qualified!!, their could a 💯 different reasons either way, it’s really not a big deal, and it’s not About where you come from or where you live, it’s an outdated clause...I’m sure the gentleman has brought this to the worlds attention, with good reason, And the Big wigs of The Ritz are Very embarrassed by this being brought to light..And will correct this out of date “wording”...no racism here..I’m sorry you got the wrong end of the stick...☹️☹️
They must be handing out loads of diplomas in grievance studies its quite a cottage industry these days.
Did you say "cottage" ?
Cottages....farming.....sheep farming....black sheep....bloody racist.
You can turn anything into racism these days.
@@NicolaSturgeon-pl4bs Yes Nicola you are correct are you a man or a woman i cant tell
or punk hair cut either
You do realise a punk hairstyle is a HAIRSTYLE, that you can CHOOSE. A afro is what grows out of our head ! We can’t change our natural hair you dweeb
Afro is not a style, having a punk hair style isn't a natural state of one's hair this is an odd parallel
@@leelobee6552 that doesnt matter there both against hair cut whether natural or not ...if i a white man had long hair ,,, you had to have it cut thats natural long hair isnt it ,,,,
is that racist
@@michaelenglish2066 No because long hair is no exclusive to white males lol all ethnicities can have long hair
@@leelobee6552 its still making hwhiteman cut his hair and you some how think that its different to ask a black man to cut his hair ..its amazing how you think these are not the same are you a brain wash white hating leftie explains your opinion
Ask the Ritz why they are discriminating against Black people's natural hair state!
They are not discriminating against any type of hair. The Ritz just wants their employees to keep their hair short, whether it grows 'out' of 'down', that's it. Good grief hair discrimination whatever next.
get your hair cut if you had long hair you would have to cut it its alll rubbish there rules like it of move along
Saying 'no afro hair' is like saying 'no ginger hair' or 'no big ears', completely different from having a chosen style!
@@chrisdixon1605 not really its just the same a hair cut

Lolz😂
Let’s not make this a racism issue
It's discriminatory as it would disproportionately only affect people of African heritage ergo racist
Ffs Mrs 😡 see it for what it is actually says no afros in the policy - never seen a white afro 🙄
@waltersobchak1719 Having to get a hair cut for the purposes of doing the job would mean it affects them Walter dah
@waltersobchak1719 Long yes. scruffy no. Afro's aren't scruffy not the same thing Walt
Even though it is!
Just get a haircut. A white man with long hair would be refused also as per their policy. For those who say its your identity blah blah blah, you are working for a company and have already sold your soul to them so get over it if you want their money. Alternatively, become self employed and you can do as you please.
If his hair was have an inch of length, it would still be considered an afro. The policy was not about hair length but about how the hair is styled. Clearly, you don't understand this concept as to why this was discriminatory.
Then put "no long hair", not "no afro". Bet you'll think differently if it said "no blond hair"🙄
@@kuliet4lifeIt did, it mentions no spikey hair, afro style. Could mean many different types of people although an apology was written to this particular chap for the wording used and rightly so. Wesley Snipes Demolition Man style would be in big trouble in your eyes I guess.
@@wolfmancool Sorry, I didn't pass the Vidal Sassoon school of hairdressing. It would have been a better option and more lucrative for him to go through the interview process and, if refused upon those grounds, then it's a clear case of discrimination which would have brought a prosecution in the eyes of UK law (which is a school I did manage to pass). He shot his bolt a bit early on this one but is now in the public domain so will get jobs thrown at him, I guess he weighed up those options before speaking out.
@@TheJonlc2000 He withdrew because by default, the policy on hair excluded him. It’s got nothing to do with you knowing about Vidal Sassoon, it’s about you paying attention to the details like most of us did & understanding that the policy targeting black hair rather than what length his hair was.
This should not be a difficult concept to understand.
ITS DISCRIMINATION NO MATTER HOW YOU TRY TO FIX IT UP. WHEN SLAVERY WAS GOI G ON THEY ENJOYED CALLING THEM NAMES YOU STILL GOT THESE CHILDREN IF ESAU.
