I think anything that hurts their quality of life shouldn't be intentionally bred/purchased. As with dog breeds and various other animals, at the point "cute" becomes more important than their health and lifespan, that's a huge problem. If it's JUST a visual change (i.e. most snake morphs) that doesn't cause any problems, by all means - go for it - why not - but if it harms them in any way, there's just no good reason to do it.

The answer is to release them into the wild and let the weak ones die of starvation, predation, and disease while the strong and smart survive and breed. My friend’s oldest goldfish was 10 years old, he died of old age. Her second oldest goldfish is 8 years old, the other 7. She adores these fish and forms strong bonds with them. To my surprise, the gold fish actually remember her face and my friend has taken the time to train them to do tricks, it’s kinda cool watching what I thought was some stupid fish actually do somewhat intelligent things. As a result of adoring these fish, my friend is really passionate about this topic, wanting to educate people on the truth about goldfish and the mutations people find ‘cute’, that goldfish require a lot more care than just putting them in a bowl of water and are not the easiest pet to keep.

Not quite the same (but cousin-enough), but my family rescued a group of koi from neglectful, abusive owners. Those guys could actually tell me apart from my parents and were adorable. We kept them for two years before a koi enthusiast with a natural pond setup became their new home, but in those two years I definitely got the impression that they were at least as smart as the cats. They could even tell when I would stick my hand in just to play and when it was food time.
I'm still sad that we never knew how to take care for a common goldfish long enough to form a bond similar to the ones we got to have with these koi. Carps in general are cool!

I own a few fancy goldfish and i can definitely say they've shaved off a few years of my life .
I started owning my first goldies back in 2018 after i graduated highschool, up until that point i had been researching about them like what size tank, how long they live, how to make gel food, veggies they can eat, what kinds there are and what the best setups for them where.
Well not even half a year after getting them my ex boyfriends mom had killed 2 of them while i was visiting family. She decided she wanted to do something "nice" for me and do a 100% water change on my tank even though myself and the other household members told her many times not to do ANYTHING with my fish as i did spend over $150+ on them at the time and dedicated my free time to them and my cat.
Well she took them out and placed them into a pot and completely wiped down the tank and drained it. Then she put 80 degree water into the tank since thats what the temp was around before, you're not supposed to do that let alone remove the fish and take all the water out. Two fish were dead within hours and I was left with "Ironically" my least favorite of the three i had, Mango.
I rushed back to town and over there to sit by that tank all night long, not sure if she would make it or not and loathed my ex's mom till this day.
By the next morning Mango was still alive and had their apatite back. Over the course of 3 days I stayed up all night making sure she was still alive, nothing else mattered to me.
Fast forward the following months, I bought her companions from the pet store since i couldn't afford any more professionally bred ones. They grew quickly in the small 20 gallon tank we were limited to and i was planning to move them into a 40 gallon outside enclosure at my parents because my ex was becoming more abusive and his mom toxic.
I had then gotten 4 new goldfish and a bristlenose from a breeder and kept them in the 40 gal outside with a heater since it was mid February and still snowing.
We soon moved that following june and i had them in a 14 gallon tote in our basement while i began setting up my new 150 gallon tank.
I was slowly giving away the guppies, mollies, plecos and the store bought goldfish to my cousin and coworker and eventually gave the 20 gallon tank to my manager at the time along with 2 of the goldfish.
By then i had a new cycled 150 gallon and i finally introduced all my goldies to each other, with Mango being the Queen of the tank and the Matriarch. Over the course of time Mnago and ALL my other goldies start developing breeding stars, Mango was really a dude!!!
I still referred to him as Queen of the tank.
Fast forward the following year around October 2019, Mango starts having bloating issues and floats to the top of the tank so finally around November i buy a 10 gallon hospital tank to keep him in and while under going treatment he'd get better and then bloaty again.
November of 2019 I had order my first goldies from kingkoi.
Around this time I had come home from work and had found Mango had also wedged himself between the heater, corner and filter and burnt his fins, tail and side of his body. His bloating issue disappeared after that, but was replaced with something far worst.
Over the next 3 weeks i had round the clock treated his burned by adding medication to both the burn and the water, cleaned his water every day, fed him peas, broccoli and seaweed sheets. The burn would had already new skin and scales starting to grow and his fins were completely healed, he was still sluggish but still got excited like a puppy when he saw me. Couple days before thanksgiving Mango at the age of 2 1/3 suddenly died. I was devastated as my first goldfish ever, the one who survived near death and was the big boss of my colony, the one that went from being least loved to the most precious child i had, died.
The weekend after thanksgiving my kingkoi goldfish arrived. i kept them in the 14 gallon tote till they were ready to be added to the new tank. 1 of which dies 2 weeks later of what seemed like dropsy/bloating.
3 months after i finally added them to the colony. Any calico goldfish i ever tried owning would pass away within a week to 2ish months of owning them, as if it were a sign.
Fast forward to today. I own 10 goldfish, one goldie from the kingkoi batch recently died to the bristlenose i had gotten from the original breeder that sent me mango, he's since been removed from my tank, but i have rescued several goldfish on the brink of death and they're as happy and healthy as can be. I do have one who was recently stuck in a feeding toy i made is undergoing treatment for a cut and a ripped tail. It's not too bad, but it still worries me as my mother had grown quite attached to him.
3 years into this hobby an it's definitely taken years off my life span from all the pain and turmoil it's caused me, but i still continue to keep my babies because they need me and i need them. they give me comfort and greet me every time i come home.
I personally am against alot of the extra modifications they give goldfish, but there are some i think are okay enough to live with.
This is just my story and maybe ill write it our better in the future and make a video about it, but until then i hope someone enjoyed reading my experience with goldfish so far.
I will still continue to collect goldfish, especially telescope butterflies as they are my absolute favorite. But i dont think i'll be buying anymore for a while till i finally move out.
Also, Mango has long since become my logo for my business and channel. He'll always be my sweet little Queen.

But, I find they can still see pretty good, plus their sense of smell is very strong which helps them find food. I agree with the unnecessary selective breeding of the "triple threat" - giant eyes, belly and head growths on one fish - has been taken too far to the point these poor babies live miserable and uncomfortable lives because of their anatomy. Hindering a fish's abilty to SWIM for human selfishness goes against the love of fish, IMO. Great subject to bring up!

To be honest it sucks. But at the same time, I feel as though that human kind have been doing this to animal life for such a long time that it'll never stop. Like dogs for example, a lot of obscured dog breads have such horrible health problems... but they're just so " cute " right?
I honestly don't get how some of them are cute because instead I'm thinking " wow, I wonder how much pain it has to deal with. " Its even worse that it's like this to the extent of not knowing which animals have been created unnaturally by us. Like I had no idea that these goldfish weren't originally suppose to be like these, and its so sad.
I do believe that it's okay to care for these animals though, because they already have to live in a very uncomfortable way, don't make their lives worse. They need love and affection too, it isn't their fault.

I think it's unethical to exploit this animals for their disabilities, that's when it becomes a problem. Of course disabled animals deserve love and good care, but when you buy fish (or any animal) FOR their disabilities/mutations, you're promoting unethical breeders that don't care about the animal's quality of life. With fishes this is specially a problem because they're sadly seen as throw away pets, easy pets that don't require care, that live a couple months and then you throw them away and buy another one (I know YOU are not like that of course but a lot of people think this way)
This is also my opinion on dog and cat breeds btw, they are more normalized but they can get just as problematic
So yeah, basically, the ones that already exist deserve love and care and to have the best life they can, but I don't think people should purposely breeding them for profit

telescopes have better vision then most people think. But bubble eye and celestial eye goldfish are a huge problem because it forces their eyes up or you know the huge fluid filled sacks, ranchu tails are bent down in a way that makes it harder from them to swim. You all ready touched on pearscale, and the wens and lionhead growths can grow over their eyes and scales and you have to trim them back. Ryukins have really deformed bodies. Their insides still grow to the size of normal goldfish in their weird shape bodies. This is why, and the worst part of goldfish. But the worst problems they have are their inbreeding. This includes the comets, shibukins, tosakin and other single tail goldfish. I also keep telescopes, but all goldfish are highly inbreed and just genetical screwed to some extent. But goldfish are not the only fish that have these problems. Bettas and Flowerhorns to name a few. Its the same reason we should stop breeding most goldfish breeds (bubble eye, pearlscale, tosakin) just like we need to stop breeding pugs.

I imported two Orandas, that both have swim bladder issues. I live in a big city, with many exotic vets, yet they all keep referring me to our local zoo to deal with the swim bladder issue. The likelihood of me ever getting a return call from the zoo is close to zero. I am able to, most days, keep my fish swimming normally, by feeding multiple small meals throughout the day. But on occasion, they still end up floating belly up. My other three fish are as healthy as can be. It’s very frustrating. To be honest, I feel like this video is misleading. Goldfish are not a beginner fish, and they require very specialized care. The problem is that most people don't provide that care or only give the minimum, which will absolutely make them die sooner. When properly cared for, fancy goldfish live an average of 10-15 years (some even into their 20s). I still have my first ever goldfish, who is now almost 9 and a telescope eye. My fish are never ill; so it's weird to me that you say one was always sick when you kept them. The only time I've ever had a disease outbreak was when I added something from a different tank without understanding how to quarantine/ disinfect properly. Lastly, like with dogs, a genetic modification isn't necessary detrimental to the animal's health. Sure we've got unethical breeds like pugs, dachshunds, and bulldogs, but there's not necessarily anything wrong with having a beagle or Golden retriever. Same principle applies to fish with multiple mutations (tele- pearl scale oranda) vs a typical fancy goldfish (telescope or oranda).

Honestly, if you want the pet for your own amusement so badly you‘ll over look their health and pain for that amusement, that‘s what makes it evil. It‘s putting your own joy over another creature‘s life, health and happiness. If you wouldn‘t deliberately produce a horribly deformed suffering child for yourself just because you think their crippling horrible deformity is cute or silly to look at, don‘t do that to your pets. Buying these pets is enabling these breeders businesses. Gambling with lives of other species is just evil. You are not their god. Your wants are not more important than another creatures life, happiness and health. Animals are prechious lives. And so we should not treat them in ways we wouldn‘t wanna be treated. If you do wanna have a pet, get one ethically and respectfully. Because that life is prechious. Pets are not your property. They are part of your family the moment you invite them into your life and chose to take care of them. So treat them like family. Not like vanity.

In my country, gold fish (the standard looking ones) aren't even avialable at pet stores anymore because people just keep killing them within a few weeks after getting them. They keep them in fish bowls on aquarium gravel, no filters, no heater, no plants, just some plastic decoration.
My childhood friends got two gold fish (20 something years ago). They killed them within 24 hours because they put the aquarium by the window and forgot there was a radiator directly underneath. They were kept in a tiny fish bowl. They got two more, had them for a few weeks, then they died too.
Another friend told me how some children in her class regulardly killed the "class pet" goldfish by purposefully overfeeding them.
Goldfish also grow huge if kept in a large enough aquarium and have really long life spans, but people think they are super easy pets you can just hand to children.

I think that it's the breeder's responsibility to take care and ensure the animals they breed are healthy and have a good quality of life, or they aren't good breeders. The animals they bring to life do not choose to be born, they aren't going to be born naturally (as in from two wild animals), so the breeder is responsible for them, and the suffering, pain and discomfort they have in their life as a product of their selected mutations.
Then it's the buyer's moral responsibility to not support the pet trades of the unhealthy animals by buying them, or worse, starting to breed them themselves. They contribute to the problem, if no one bought specific morphs, they wouldnt be expensive and therefore sought after and bred. It's selfish to support the trade of animals that suffer and have a bad quality of life just because YOU want a pet that is pretty, cute, or novel.
Alex from GoHerping has a great video on spider ball pythons (a pretty morph that sadly has neurological issues), i know its snakes instead of goldfish but I recommend watching it if you want a more thorough perspective on this because the subject is really similar and it covers a lot of great points in common.

I have fancies. I’ve had them for 3 years never had any issues with them. I am also an avid plant keeper and planted my tank. I believe they deserve a natural set up because we created them and owe them a natural place to live since we did that to them. I think that is why they have been so healthy. And I have them in a heated tank so I think the combination has really helped the health of my fish

I just came from another video where they were featuring Ranchu goldfish, and the one thing that stuck out in my mind was how difficult it seemed for the fish to stay upright and swim. Unlike the common goldfish, these modified ones seem to have a difficulty simply not flipping onto their sides. I’d often see them having to make adjustments as they began tipping over multiple times just in a minutes time. And in trying to swim away, the flurry of tail swoops required just to move them a few centimeters was ridiculous. And the whole time the content producer was going on and on about how beautiful and cute these little goldfish were. Reminded me of how in China people once thought that the tiny mincing steps of a woman whose feet had been bound as a child was a thing of beauty.

Depends on what type of fish keeper you are. I have 2 orandas and a ranchu in a 75 gallon. As long as you give them the necessary space to swim, keep them with similar goldfish, and remove dangerous objects (like decorations) they will be happy fish. As fish keepers we decide what to put in our tank and we can tailor the conditions to match the requirements of the fish.

I love fancy goldfish to but I do not like that sometimes they go overboard in the proportion.
Like I like a butterfly telescope too, but I do not want one that are eyes that are TOO big.
Also from what I heard the reason why the bubble eye goldfish lookup is because they were originally kept in ponds. So people would view them from the top. The same goes with the butterfly Telescope and the Top view Ranchu. They were bred to look beautiful to people who would only see them from above
I guess that is why breeders cull their fish so heavily. It does not only get the features that they want but the fishes that are healthy and doing well ( relatively) with the features that they have.
Also, remember that most goldfish breeders keep their fancy goldfish outside. Where they experience the elements like the heat of summer and the cold of winter ( Though some do heat their ponds, I am not sure how common that is) which may help in making those fancy goldfish a bit more hardy

The only fancy goldfish that I like and have kept are fantailed and veiltailed. They're some of the most basic fancy goldfish that exists and the fantail are on par with the common comet goldfish when it comes to health. So if you want to have goldfish but for some reasons don't like common comets I suggest going with fantailed once (or smaller tailed veiltailed once, too big fins can imped their swimming).
Basically fantail goldfish are like comets but with an egg-shaped body with larger fins (and veiltail are once with extra large fins). They can come in several colours and combinations. I find them beautiful.

And while hardier than the fancy goldfish they are a LOT of work, but I loved my babies their entire lives; they passed all around 15 years old after 12 years of care in 2 40 gallon tanks. I miss them so much.

Fish in general are sensitive animals, if the water is to hot/cold, the ph to high, not enough bubbles, etc they can get sick. Goldfish are often seen as the acception as they tend to be harder fish, people tend to get away with badder fish keeping practices when it comes to goldfish. Then it becomes the question of whether the fish is weak from it's bad breeding (As we all know pet store breeders are a shit show) or if it's because of a problem with the tank or the body mutations.
For most of the goldfish breeds the mutation isn't the problem it's the bad breeding that is. As goldfish in most countries are breed in mass not carring for the health of them or if they're related causing fish with higher health problems and complications.
Short sighted animals is nothing new in nature aka rhinos. It's hard to breed for good eye sight when we can't see threw the animals eyes. There was a study done on people with how our eye sight developes and they found the more we stay in a confined space like a room the worse our eye sight developes. Then to think how we keep most fish in a glass box and bright lights how that type of environment might be effecting their eyesight.
With the boms not all grow to a point of problem, and again such growths aren't uncommon in nature aka Turkey toms but the fish do have an advantage of them being under water taking away the weight of it.
I do draw my line at the pearl and boogy eyed goldfish for no other reason of it restricts the comfort of the animal.
