Once you are born in the beautiful mountains nothing on this earth will ever change it or replace or take it out of you ❤❤ You will have a very hard time living without beauty mountains ❤
Such a beautiful area!! Tks for showing this to us!! This is not meant to be disrespectful or controversial, but if I were presented w/ the choice of tourism versus a waste plant {honestly, I would not want either}....however, based on personal experience....I would 100% rather have the waste plant. For 35+ yrs I lived in a highly tourist-leveraged area. Trash, disrespect for the local people/culture & natural resources, increased prices across all aspects of commerce, increased traffic, increased personal property taxes (to the point where some long-time residents could not afford & literally lost their home place), increased real estate market, increased pressure on the local health/emergence systems, increased crime, the attitude of the tourist that they were entitled to do as they please....I can go on and on. Yes...I'll take commerce, even a waste facility, over tourism every time!
What a beautiful place. Virginia is the most beautiful state as far as I’m concerned, but I’m biased😁 It’s sad how the mountain towns and people seem to get run over by big money. I was through Cleveland many years ago on a fishing trip. The waterfall was so beautiful. I wish y’all a happy Thanksgiving! God bless you!
Thank you for the feedback, I’ve been about sick and tired of these mics and that was the final straw. I just ordered new ones so hopefully this will be fixed by the start of the new year at least
I have been thinking about you folks most of the day wondering if I had missed a video. So glad to know that you are driving down a road with such beautiful scenery. Virginia is such a beautiful state. It brings back memories of the two years I lived in the state. Actually part of the state reminds me of WV especially that highway you are on Shane. It remind of me of Rt 60 in WV traveling from Charleston to Lewisburg. It is strange that you would mention a ghost car. There is a highway in NJ which has a ghost truck. A documentary on the NJ ghost truck was made about two years ago. Love the old school. A couple in MO purchased the elementary school they attended as children. They are renovating the old school as their new home. If I was about 30 years younger, I would love to purchased a one room school and renovate it into a home. Thank you for this awesome adventure. I want to wish both of you and Kennedy a very Haooy Thanksgiving. Where can Ip purchase your book>???
Thank you, Judy! With the baby coming we haven’t been able to video as much but we still go as we can and love it! The ghost car is definitely an interesting story. I had heard of some but never the one you mentioned! To purchase a signed book you can send $28 to appalachianproject16@gmail.com. That covers book and shipping! Or you can purchase it from Amazon as well. Thank you for always supporting us!! We appreciate you. - Melody
@@realappalachiaBaby?! I must have missed some vids! How exciting. Feel better & you have a little passenger to ride along with you guys in the future 🙏🏻😊
Well, my goodness Melody. A baby. WOW! How exciting! When are you due? I certainly hope that you feeling better .Melody, Little Kennedy will have a brother or sister to play with soon. Simply awesome. Hats off to Shane. I am going up to the mountains in WV for Thanksgiving. I hope that you have a blessed Thanksgiving.@@realappalachia
Hey sweetpeas! I've been missing y'all! Hubby fell last Nov 1st and suffered a severe spinal cord injury & broken neck. He now is in a long-term care facility which has hit me very hard since he's took care of me ever since I became disabled in 1998 at 37. He's very unhappy, been in & out of hospitals alot, and misses being home terribly. I've had so much other stuff happen to me as well. I've suffered a compression spinal fracture, another fracture below that & severe stenosis and degeneration. My dr thinks I may have more going on, so I go for an MRI on 25th to see if there's possibly one more thing that could be done to help with my pain & falling so much. So, I'm alone now, but our son will come help me when he can. I have to use a walker even in the house & our son has had to build a ramp so I don't have to do steps which are a no-no. Please keep us in prayer. And I've got just a little bit of advice for y'all. Please never take each other for granted, always spend as much time together as you can, hugs & kisses cover more than just a baby's boo-boo. I still catch y'all here & there but when I'm able I try to spend time with hubby. Life can change in a split second so don't do or say anything hurtful without apologizing immediately. And when that little bundle of joy gets here, you two will be great!! I don't think I've seen Shane so happy since I've been watching, and that's been a long time, when he was traveling alone. Melody you have brought happiness & joy to all of us and you will be blessed in many ways! And Shane, you take the best care of her as is possible. You're a sweet man & you deserve much happiness! So, if this old woman doesn't get to comment much in the future, just know I'll be thinking of you both & watching when I can. Y'all have been very special in my life and the videos as far back as Shane by himself has gotten me thru many sleepless nights!! Y'all please stay safe, know there's a lot of folks who love y'all and God bless y'all always!! Hugs & blessings from VA! ❤️🙏🫶🐈🐈⬛🦃🐾🌺 Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!! 🍽🍗
So proud of y'all supporting this community! We are dealing with the dumping of human and industrial waste water sludge being used on farm land here in Alabama. New York city was sending rail cars full of down here. Loaded with chemicals, heavy metals, drugs, hormones, etc. All under the approval of EPA. They are making our rural areas dumping grounds.
Having just moved to a Rural county in the mountains of Virginia I have been hesitant to share some of what's in my area because I have seen what the lure of tourism and it's money can do to a community. While it can help if it raised the cost of housing and rents it can be detrimental to an area where there is a lot of poverty.
I have heard of Cleveland, TN, but not Cleveland, VA. As sort of a hobby, I like to research church denominations, and that's how I found out about Cleveland, TN, because there's a denomination called "Church of God (Cleveland, Tennessee)". Anyway, that school you drove up to see at around 5:00, that made me think of Shiloh, which is an incorporated borough in Cumberland County, NJ (population 445). It used to have its own school (and it was historic), but several years ago the state eliminated the Shiloh school district. So now the children of Shiloh have to be bussed to a school in one of the surrounding townships. Anyway, that was a pretty place with the waterfall there, and that church! That campground looked like a very nice place too, and it was good to see the deer, but we get to see them a lot here. I enjoyed the video as always.
This was neat, my wife's people are all from there. I haven't been there in about 10 years, but I was involved with some of the construction of the new ash fill for the Carbo plant. I had totally forgotten about it until I saw y'all's video, and now I'm wondering what happened. They started building the ash fill site and then the plants was in the process of switching to natural gas, and decided to finish the site for regular transferred in trash, I thought that was the plan anyway. But it kind of sounds like still nothing has happened in 10 years?
Great vid as always! Quick question. What is a Hot Pot? I passed through West Virginia a couple weeks ago down from Canada and kept seeing them all over the place
It's a Chinese communal meal. Served in a large metal pot of simmering broth. You add your choice of raw foods. I haven't tried it yet, but some of my friends love it.
I'm always amazed at how many of the coal towns of Southwestern Virginia looks very similar. During your drive, I felt like you were cruising through parts of Clinchco, Dante, McClure, etc. I certainly hope that Russell County doesn't get that landfill, because whatever revenue it might generate, the damage to the environment is going to be monumental, and will someday cost the county a lot more money to clean things up. It sadly always seems to be the case. Counties like Russell and Dickenson are too lovely to have their environments further damaged. There's never going to be healthy tourism if there's little left to enjoy. As always, I enjoy your videos, and appreciate that you do them. Sometimes when I'm at my art table drawing, I get a little homesick for Clintwood, but your videos always cheer me up. Thanks for that!
You’re totally right on all you said! So many resemble one another and sadly another pattern is a lot of coal towns being taken advantage of in other ways. We’re really hoping and praying against that landfill as well!! Thank you! - Melody
Thats the old cleveland high school. It became cleveland elementary sometime in the 90s. Its still well secured and maintained by the owner and volunteers from the russell county sheriffs office. I was inside in 2014 2015 with the sheriffs to prepare/clean for special ops folks from the ATF. The sheriffs office opens it from time to time for various law enforcement agencies to do active shooter drills/school shooter training. Fun fact this building and the downtown lebanon russell county sheriffs office/old jail are privately owned and rented to the county. Anyways, i beleive last class was around 2009 2010. The building is still in very good shape at least in 2015. It looked like you could turn on the lights do a little cleaning and start class within a few days.
0000 Steel Wool with soapy water will make your window like new again. Would do wonders for your videos. Well and cleaning the inside with glass cleaner.
anti depressants gave me hullicnations after taking them awhile, I hullicinated a whole conversation with my hubby coming home from work and then later I went looking for him and he had not come home yet, I instantly decided no more medications. these were audio andvisual and that was creepy
i left when our local landfill got ripe after ten years. all the properties around the site were for sale at once for 8 years straight. smell ya later...im out.
The sire at Carbo is a very bad place to put a landfill due to the natural geological conditions, “such as the Lee Formation Fault that follows Clinch River from Bluefield Virginia to Cumberland Gap Tennessee, as well as the Buffalo Mountain-fault that is directly adjacent to the proposed landfill site”, not to mention the extensive mining that has been done in Southwest Virginia. These faults and fractures caused by mining are a dangerous combination for a landfill site. I hope The Russell County Board of Supervisors has the good common sense to block the landfill and not be blindsided by the economical impact “it may have”. But we the people know what to do if they don’t. Vote them out of office.

My grandmother taught at Cleveland HS way back when. ❤. Thank you.
I go through there a few times a year I deliver for a living.
2:04 that's the old HS actually
wow very interesting content friend

Love the content but I have one suggestion. You just need to invest in a better camera. Other than that, nice vid

By the way guys there is also a Cleveland Georgia. It's in White county in the mountains of North Georgia. It is home to the Cabbage patch dolls.
Now that’s cool. The cabbage patch dolls were a phenomenon back in their day
Shane's mood shipment arrived today, he's seeing ghost cars. 👻 🚘🤪
