- Is the .30 Super Carry a legitimate self-defense cartridge? I think so ... if you like higher magazine capacity, this round is for you. If a 9mm has too much recoil for you, the .30 Super Carry might be just enough of a difference to work for you.
Great video! I'm glad you brought up the 32 H&R and 327 Federal magnums. I EDC an SP101 in 327, and it's awesome to hear it get some love. A dedicated 327 Federal video would be most welcomed if you have the time.

Dick, THANK YOU for another excellent video. I hope your next “.4x revolver defensive cartridges” video won’t ignore the .45 Colt. I own an excellent S&W M625, four inch barrel Mountain Gun, chambered for the .45 Colt. IMHO, it equals (and exceeds) .45 ACP revolvers, simply because the old .45 Colt’s cartridge case capacity provides a LOT of potential for greater power (of course, one must absolutely ensure the revolver’s structural design can accommodate enhanced power). Again, I appreciate your videos and respect your solid, highly experienced and very well articulated presentations.
Thanks for your kind words. I do discuss the .45 Colt and the Mountain Gun would be the best carry model you could find. Indeed, you can load the Colt to levels generating too much recoil to use comfortably. When loaded to levels similar to the .45 ACP +P with good modern JHPs or wide flat nose lead slugs, the Colt is an excellent choice.
.45 Colt fought from the Indian wars all the way into WW2. Now with modern revolvers, it's back. Only this time to lay down some America on vicious bears and rogue sasquatch. It's the George Foreman of cartridges. It should enjoy retirement, but too much fight left in him.
I have two 30 Super Carry firearms. My S&W Shield Plus holds 17 rounds of 30 Super Carry in a pistol the size of a Glock 43.
You mean 43X. With a palmeto or shield magazine they hold 15.
It’s actually a smaller footprint than the 43 especially the 43X.

ETA: OK for folks needing a reduced recoil option - it's always good to have more options. I'd still think that a good snub nose revolver is a better option - and you can get those in .327 Mag. Ah you just mentioned that.... and I totally agree that the old guys (and gals) should carry for sure!!
30SC was created for short barrel pistols….another thing is because the the super high pressure the slide resets real fast you can do a 17 rd mag dump super fast in the Shield! It’s definitely a quick shooter. 👍🏻
30sc SHOULD have been super popular. Unfortunately, hardly anyone made a pistol for it.
My problem with .30 super carry was that it came on the scene exactly when our president was screaming loudest about outlawing 9mm because it was too dangerous.
In places like South America, "Duty" and /or "Military" calibers are illegal for citizens, who are restricted to lesser calibers to insure that police and military have a distinct advantage over the general population.
All of a sudden - BOOM - .30 super carry, perfect ammunition for "civilians" . . . (Not effective enough for law enforcement use . . . but good enough for YOU!)

They are not worried about increased magazine capacity - their aim is to restrict all civilian firearms to 10 anyway.
I have nothing against someone CHOOSING .30 super carry - my worry was mandates.
With ALL the restrictions that keep piling up to negate my Second Amendment Rights and disarm me - I can't even offer any apology for my paranoia!
As far as I know they are not restricted to lesser calibers, they are just not allowed to own the military&police caliber of 9mm. For example they also could own 38 Super or 45 ACP. In Italy it was the same (I dont know if still) But they even had a civil 9mm which was 9x21 instead of 9x19.

In gel, I believe it was Sootch00 who tested 30sc vs 9mm and saw
.603" from the 30sc, .61" from the 9mm both Speer Gold Dot,
Negligible difference, 30sc penetrated similarly.
9mm = 364lbs ME
30 sc = 347lbs ME
Again, negligible difference.
16+1 in a micro autoloader, definitely a viable option.

Thank you Dick for another good review. I tend to agree that the SC falls somewhere in between the 380 and 9. I think it would have the greatest appeal for those first timers, both as new firearm owners, and who then want a personal defense handgun that is in the compact to subcompact range. I too, haven't shot one yet, but from the reports of those who have, it is a bit easier to work the slides on them than the 9, so novice and limited mobility people can have something that operates more like a 380. Since we are talking about newbies, who aren't into reloading, the cartridge should give an advantage over the average 380 in terms of standard ammunition. At least at this time by ballistic calculation. The last thing is it will offer +2 or more in the magazine over the 380. So, all the things that a person new to firearms, with an eye to concealed carry may want. As for those experienced shooters who may indeed handload, it may not have much appeal, unless as you mentioned, they end up with physical limitations that the smaller round would fill their need. All in all, I hope it succeeds, like I do most every cartridge.

I carry sig Sauer 180 grain 1250 ft per second jacketed hollow points. To me, it's no harder to shoot than my 686 357 magnum. I would like to see you do a video on that 10 mm setup. I love it. I use a kydex holster and carry it almost every day. It's hard to beat 15 + 1 10 millimeter , as long as you practice.

I’m a 77 y/o that’s carried under LEOSA since my ‘97 retirement. Our annual retiree qualification is a fun get together usually followed by a lunch at the American Legion post.
HR 218 was signed and went into effect in 2004. It was posted in my P.D. Squad Room. It reminded M.O.S. to follow certain states laws like New Jersey to not use hollowpoint bullets.

I still feel totally well armed with a S&W K or L frame 4". That's because I've got several hundred thousand rounds thru those revolvers, not plinking or making noise but working on accuracy. Shooting PPC with some great mentors helped a lot. I sincerely don't feel any more secure or better armed with 16 rds of a smaller caliber. Although I wish I'd bought one of those first 7 shot L frames as they're pretty spendy now. Oh well, I could write large book of stuff I should've and should not have done.

If you use a 9mm pistol for defense and you’d rather have a cartridge that has less energy, makes smaller holes in bad guys, has smaller hollow-point cavities for less expansion, is too small to use in competitions for practice, is harder to find in stores, and is more expensive, then 30SC is for you.

The physics have remained the same since the beginning. Powders have advanced and what not, which influences cartridge dimension and firearm actions; but really, since the late 19th century, things have not really changed, in terms of internal and external ballistics.
A bullet of .40 caliber dimension, weighing 180 grains, doing ~ 1,200 fps out of a c. five inch barrel, for instance: a specific .40 S&W load, and certain 10mm Auto load? Yes and yes. Late 20th century development? Yes. But it could also be 38-40 Winchester in like 1880.
Same with "30 Super Carry." At the end of 19th century and going into the beginning of the 20th, there was a plethora of pistol cartridges in 6.something, 7.62, 7.65mm caliber range, with similar power potentials. So something new in Super Carry is new, but something like 7.65 French is "old."

@@antpassalacqua A lot of those cartridges OP listed are interesting. Some of them may have been far more successful too if other factors had been different.
5.7 FN for instance. It was originally designed with defeat of soft armor as a prime intent. If civilians could have legally and easily acquired military spec loadings of it then it may have proven to be much more popular, because body armor has become relatively common to the point there is a credible concern over the criminal element wearing it. With the "sanitized" versions of 5.7 being what they are though, there wasn't much of anything to distinguish a Five SeveN pistol from other offerings, save perhaps some extra magazine capacity.

Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts. The only advantage of this caliber I see is capacity that does not seem to offset the disarranges. When compared to the 9mm of a similar weight class recoil calculations are about the same, the noise level has been stated to be greater, available gun selections are less, and the cost per round is much greater. The latter is the most significant in my view because of its impact on practice. I have been around a long time seen a lot of "new" cartilages come and fade from popularity. More options are better, but I do not see this one standing the test of time.
Yes is must be quite a bit louder. It has 50,000psi and 9mm +p+ 39,000psi. Also 327 Federal is louder than 357 Mag for the same reason. More pressure.

Honestly, I forgot it existed.
It would have been a great alternative to .380, but from what I understand, it has way too much pressure to be viable in anything smaller than a micro 9 frame. So .30 Super Carry has to fight against a market flooded with inexpensive 9mm pistols. It’s just not going to work out.
Its not only the pressure, also it has about the same recoil as 9mm. So it lose the benefit of 380 that has less recoil.
@@Gieszkanne That's unfortunate. Having two more rounds over a micro 9 doesn't sound worth the trouble if you don't have less recoil either.

Great video, i never really considered the 30 super carry , however there is always a huge supply of it in JHP and FMJ on the shelves here in San Antonio, thought about picking one up for that reason alone

9mm was sold to us with promises of mostly adequate performance when compared to the standard of 357mag. The trade-off was that you could carry more rounds.
Now, 30 super carry is being marketed using the exact same sales pitch, but with 9mm as the new standard. "Almost as good as mediocre" sounds like a horrible idea, regardless of how many shots it adds to my magazine.
I don't want to have to land 7 center mass hits just to get the desired effect on target that 1 hit should achieve.

I hope the 30 SC stays around awhile. I see the best use case being the micro compacts, Sig P365 and company. It would have better ballistics than a .380 while being just as easy to shoot and having a couple rounds greater capacity. Seems to be the Goldilocks round for that class of pistol.
30SC Has its hands full trying to compete with a 380 +p 100 grain hardcast...or a hot 380 fmj...remember 380 is a .355 caliber to begin with that WONT shrink as opposed to a .31 caliber bullet that may expand to around 35+ -45 caliber! 🤷♂️
@@kevinrichardson8859 True. But there is technically no SAAMI spec for .380 +P. The ceiling for .380 is 21,500 psi, IIRC. However, I suspect most commercial loadings don’t come close to this. The .380 +P loads are starting to get a little spicy for me. I have a little arthritis creeping in my hands and right wrist. In probably less than 10 years I would appreciate a low recoil platform that is of usable size and easy to manipulate without stepping down to rim fire. Either that or some miracle cure. That’s the way I was leaning, anyway.
@philippicphilodox888 well then 30sc is not leaning away from recoil from a 380...as the pressure is over 40kpsi for starters...380+ p and any bullet around 100 grains or even a federal hst 99 grain or a federal hydra shok deep 99 grain or a Remington Golden saber at 102 grains will deliver similar or comparable wounding...cheaper and more readily available than any 30sc WITH less recoil AND cheaper! Any quality locked breech 380 ie...sig p238...G42...Springfield 911...sig p365 can easily handle the "380+p" remember it's just to shoot some to verify zero and reliability..and then carry
..not a range ammo
@@kevinrichardson8859 I have a Sig P250 in .380 that I bought years ago as my “old man gun.” For some reason, the thing shoots like a laser with most ammunition, significantly better than any polymer pistol I’ve ever shot, and it is easy to rack and shoot. It’s kind of chonky for a .380, though, and the latent hipster in me was thinking about something more sleek and trendy. But the thing one already has is always a good option to consider.
@@philippicphilodox888 glock 42 is laser bean accurate and definitely "sleeker" and svelte than a p250....add some nice night sights and a couple spare mags and you are good to go
A rep from Speer mentioned to me that clear gel only has about 70% correlation to calibrated gel, so what you mention seeing in your water test sounds more useful.

I would like to hear your thoughts on the 5.7x28 as a self defense round from a pistol and a carbine if possible. Thank you for your consideration and time to instruct.
I've had a couple of requests about the 5.7. I shot both the pistol and subgun when an FN salesman showed up at the state police range one day ... neat and easy to shoot weapons. I'll give some thought about where to borrow a pistol/carbine and wring out the 5.7 for a video. Whet I've seen on terminal testing in gelatin, I'm not very impressed.
Myself, I prefer .45 ACP, 9mm Luger. and 5.7x28mm for self defense handgun carry. I have 'no dog in this argument'. Just saying what my preferences are. Yes, I do carry handguns of all 3 calibers every day. I do change up EDC guns often, but NOT the way I carry.
It’s sort of a move in the opposite direction as the 40 in that it’s slightly weaker than the 9mm with less recoil and a little more capacity. It seems like an okay little round.
All you have to do is use an inertia "mallet" bullet-pulling device to remove the 50 gr solid copper hp out of Liberty Arms 380 ammo and load it over a lot more Alliant Bullseye powder. than would be the case with a 90 gr jhp. Work up to a safe max load, 1/2 grain at a time. when your next move up doesnt show a matching increase in velocity, back off 1/2 grain. use heavy gloves, no magazine, and "hug" a tree when working up loads. Dont work up max safe loads in cold weather or with a cold ammo cause when one or both get hot, it ups the pressures. You can melt the lead out of 95 gr ball bullets, replace it with epoxy and have about a 45 gr bullet, depending upon what epoxy you use. That will save you a few of the $2 each bullets from Liberty arms. Factory 380 ammo has to be safe to fire in simple blowback guns, so it's about 15,000 CUP under-pressure for what's safe in a locked-breech gun. The keltec, Ruger, etc, are sub 5.5" x 4.5" and 10 ozs, so you dont need anything smaller or lighter.
Well, I love the idea of the .327 Federal Magnum and the .357 Sig too. Great ideas with no hope, I'm afraid. I really hope the future proves me wrong.
All the ballistic testing I have watched, the .30 SC expansion reminds me of a rifle bullet expansion. Wide petals with a long base. If you look at a HST in .30 SC, the skives are cut deep...but look to me to be designed to limit the expansion to a certain level. I am not a Ballistic Expert, just a guy who likes to shoot lotsa different gun's. I have become pretty intrigued in the .30 SC. Hopefully it will catch on and stick around.

From the most reviews I have seen they say it has the same recoil as 9mm. On the shotshow last year some youtubers shot the S&W EZ 9mm and 30SC side by side and couldnt feel a differnece in recoil. So the only advantage is 1or 2 rounds more. So it rivals more the 9mm. Its not a mouse gun caliber. Micro 9mm is the smallest it could go. Also because of the high pressure of 50,000psi. Also with this high pressure the 30SC is louder. For some this is also a concern,because in self defence you will shoot without ear protection.
I have a 30 super in a smith and Wesson shield plus, so far so good!

Honestly, I feel the biggest error that Federal made in promoting the .30 SC was trying to position it as a 9mm replacement when they should have positioned it as a better .380.
I would be curious to know how small a gun you could cram it into before it could no longer exceed .380 performance. I don't think it could ever match .32 for size, if only because of the longer case length, but I still wonder.
It is certainly not setting the world on fire with its sales so far.
Once a police officer retires or quits his job as an officer, I don't really see why they should have any more rights to carry a gun than any other citizen with a CCL. But experience is worth something I guess, and as long as they have good ethics I have no problem with it.
I think the theory behind LEOSA was two fold. First it allowed retired officers to protect themselves against bad guys they had helped incarcerate who they might bump into once released. Secondly, it put hundreds of thousands of trained and experienced officers on the street, armed, who might stop a terrorist attack or active shooter incident in the early stages. However, I agree CCW holders should also have nationwide concealed carry.
When I first saw 30 SC I thought "well this has everything 9mm guys like, should do well". But it seems hardly any of them made the switch or give it any merit. Granted, I understand the platform choice is limited.

Seems like an answer to a problem that didn’t exist.
I'm hoping a focus towards some really slim(and concealable) pistols happens going forward. Perhaps slimmer than pistols typically available in 9mm while having the same number of rounds or slightly more in the mag. The 30 Super Carry might even have potential in a pocket pistol with more reliable expansion than the .380 ACP from a short barrel.
Its not a mouse gun caliber. Pressure is higher than 9mm +p+ and recoil is like standard pressure 9mm.
I though the 30 super carry will be suitable for a fast reloading 7 shot or 8 if present metallurgy allows.Reloaded thru moon clips of course.Cheers from Phillipines.
This to me is a modern higher pressure 7.65 French Long 7.65x22.
I carry .380+P in my LCP max with a 12rd magazine. I have chronoe'd it at 1030fps and 215fpe with Underwood 90gr+P XTPs. (I have a video listing the modifications I did to the pistol to beef it up for +P use).
The average pressure of the .30 Super Carry cartridge is 52,000 psi, which could be a safety issue in pocket-size firearms that were designed for 21,500 psi (average .380 ACP pressure). However, any ammunition that is NOT used by military and law enforcement is good news for civilian markets, as long as civilians understand the importance of ammunition diversity. Meaning, good luck finding affordable 9mm if a major war breaks out. 30 Super Carry can survive if 52,000 psi does not injure too many shooters AND if made by manufacturers who only have production lines for civilian ammunition (e. g .30 SC, .223, 22LR, .357/.38) that will NOT re-purpose those production lines for military ammunition (e.g. 9mm, 5.56, etc).

My thoughts are quite similar to yours, but it’s interesting to hear you go over it and it appears you have much more experience than myself at the real world effects of these cartridges. Hopefully I never have your level of experience in the real world with these cartridges. So far you have said that the ideal self-defense cartridge is the 40 Smith & Wesson. You have indirectly ran that higher than anything else. Many people would not say that today I do believe you are correct and so did Dave Emary so here’s my thought for you. Is the best system you can run 40 Smith & Wesson in a Beretta PX4 Storm? That gives you the soft recoil that everybody wants from the 9 mm and the better barrier penetration that 40 clearly has over 9 mm. If you wonder why I say the Beretta PX4, it is because it is notably softer shooting than most other handguns particularly for a lightweight handgun. And, it was a handgun actually designed from the ground up for the 40 Smith & Wesson.

The 7.65x20 French Long is physically very similar to the 30 SC, but tends to be downloaded. The auto pistol cartridge that comes closet to mirroring the ballistics of the 30 SC is probably the 30 Luger (7.65x21). The 7.63x25 Mauser or 7.62x25 Tokarev are loaded much hotter than any of them. Frankly, I've never warmed up to the idea of using a 32 caliber handgun for self-defense, so I'll pass.
Yeah I agree: this is very similar to 7.65 French, and some Mauser cartridges.

These sorts of pistol cartridges never dominated back in the day, especially in the U.S.A., so I can't really see it happening now either.
The rimmed equivalents, 32 H&R and 327 Magnum, will probably maintain some presence in the market, because they can afford some decent power in a small revolver frame, with the added benefit of chambering seven shots to a cylinder that would otherwise typically be five shots (38 SPL).
But in terms of autoloaders, it's hard to think of a substantial target demographic. Most people will gravitate to 9mm Luger or 380 Auto on one side or the other, instead of getting 30 Super Carry.

Waiting for super30 in smaller thinner lighter carry pieces than current micro9s. Ie: 380 pocket carry size.

The .30 SC and the equivalent ,32 revolvers can serve a man or a woman with carefully selected loads. Yes, I guess I'm an old guy like and see the man as the "protector." Better yet is a female partner who is well armed and trained and you can work as a team.
Hi point makes a carbine for this . I am sure it is for countries that ban military cartridges . nobody shot with a 30sc or 9mm will probably be able to tell the diffrence .
Very nice Video, and while I'm with Urey Patrick & either wanting it to start with a 4 or 357 magnum & think total wound volume/PCC/Tissue Crush is vastly overlooked nowadays...Federal has done a ton .327/.30super carry will obviously be effective, but with Hydrashok Deep .38 Snubs, .380, and now I just got their official data on new .32 ACP are all viable, as is .32 H&R with their 85 gr JHP. I met Doctor (Colonel) Fackler at a body armor conference in Reston, VA 1990. He coached me into developing a water-based testing system much easier to use than 10% gelatin. One of my earliest video demonstrates the water jug testing and the formula you can use in one-gallon milk jugs to determine the depth of penetration. The expansion/penetration characteristics of pistol velocity JHP bullets is almost the same in water or 10%.

I've compared my tests so far (2 of which are public, the Heavy Winter 6-layer .357 mag videos are upcoming) & they compared very favorably to real Organic Gel Official Data I have managed to get with slight barrel length variable taken into play. I'd love it if you looked at some of my Ballistics videos, either my testing videos, No BS Caliber video, or 9mm vs .45 series I think I have a firm grasp on things.

How does it stack up against the .30 carbine round? It might be okay in a carbine, but is it needed? I love the .41 Magnum and .257 Roberts (and wildcat variations) and they have their place, but are they necessary? No, not really. If the performance is equivalent, why not just use thirty carbine? Because it doesn't have their name on it.

Im ONLY going "larger" caliber than 380...definitely not smaller in a handgun! .355 caliber (380 and 9mm para) is larger "caliber " than .31 caliber(30sc) a 100 grain 380 +p hardcast or fmj at or around 1000-1150 fps will certainly cause comparable trauma to a 30sc...and do it alot cheaper!!

What "Super Carry" is, was an ill conceived, very inadequately marketed idea. It's the "Edsel" equivalent in cartridges. ..... S&W: "Let's confuse our fastest growing demographics with a previously unknown, vaguely named cartridge, with only TWO actual choices of carry pistols chambered for it !"
... (mostly newcomers consisting of young people, ... ladies, ... and seniors). And while we're at it, let's provide extremely limited choices in ammunition, ... priced at exorbitantly higher prices than 9MM, at a time when prices of ALL actual necessities are steadily increasing !! Brilliant move, S&W !! 😅😂
For me, caliber “wars” are really meaningless. Yes, some calibers may do better, but it boils down to the following.
Use whatever caliber you are proficient with, can accurately make hits and penetrate deep enough. The KISS principle.

Cool cartridge but not worth investing in with 9mm being so prevelant and well established. First time gun buyers only wanting one gun for CCW may be more inclined to 30SC, but I won't jumping on the bandwagon.
30 SC is the perfect solution for a problem that has never existed, a round nobody asked for, and a round nobody wants. It’s a great example of marketing over practicality/performance. Simply nonsense. Suckers are born every day.

Horrible marketing on the part of Federal. The 30 Super Carry should have been a long overdue update of the 32 ACP which was developed by John Browning in 1899. It should have also competed with 380ACP. It will not be successful as a replacement for service cartridges like 9x19, 357 Sig, 40SW or 45ACP. The cartridge should have been called 32 Super Auto and it should have been loaded to energy levels equivalent to 380ACP ... ~ 220 ft-lbs. Alot of people would have liked a new "old school" 32 pocket pistol with 380ACP power. Competing with 9mm Luger was a mistake, especially with the new high capacity compacts like the Hellcat, P365 and Shield+. Federal made the same mistake with 327 Federal competing with 357 Magnum.
My 30sc is a shield plus I have arthritis and am happy with it

Exactly! Hopefully when they eventually make a super duper .25 caliber handgun cartridge it'll be more akin to what the 30SC should have been.
@@MegaAppleshit The 25ACP and 32ACP are semi rimmed, so they also work well with revolvers. Both of these cartridges should be modernized with an energy boost... but not so hot that they don't work well in pocket pistols.
Unless the "Big G" make a pistol for this cartridge, I think it will go the way of the Dodo bird.

Doesn't matter, the 45 GAP and 357 Sig failed despite the "Big G". The 30 SC is finished, done, over with. No reason why anyone would get this over the 9 mm.
That hasn't been the case for 5.7x28 mm. That also took a while to catch on. The 30 SC is to 5.7x28 mm what 300 BLK is to the 5.56. Better out of a short barrel.

I agree essentially. With their added training and experience, I feel retired LEOs and Military should be exempt from "sensitive areas," able to carry everywhere except lockups and courtrooms.

Nope. There are not two classes of citizens. Retired LEOs should be treated just like the rest of the citizenry. If they can carry there, *everyone* should be as well. Being a former government employee should not grant additional rights.

I have to state emphatically - the idea that 30 supercarry was better than - OR - out to replace 9mm was NEVER the idea. It is slightly softer to shoot than 9mm and gets 2 more rounds into the same magazine space...and this IS a good idea on its own. The place where 30 Supercarry SHINES is that it BLOWS THE DOORS off 380acp in the ballistics department AND adds 20% more rounds to the magazine capacity in the same space. To me , by doing these two BIG things THIS round actually makes 380 OBSOLETE immediately - ESPECIALLY for for folks with older , weak hands OR lady shooters that are not affectionate toward 9mm recoil - MY WIFE being one of them !!! The 380 is a practically a whimp , and we ALL know it...but the 9mm is little stout in the recoil department and this SPECIFICALLY WHY the 380 has picked up such a huge market share in recent years. When you consider slightly less recoil than 9mm BUT WAAAAY better ballistics AND more rounds in the magazine - 30 Supercarry becomes THE HANDS-DOWN WINNER !! THIS is what is was made for and should be CELEBRATED as such - instead - keyboard warriors with size issues keep comparing it to the cartridge it was NEVER INTENDED to replace !?! I do not understand all these comments I see around the net that completely miss the point - it was made as a much better round than the extremely popular , but slightly anemic , 380...it is NOT a "snob" round nor is it a gimmick to "fleece" people for more money. When properly understood by those who can think a little deeper than internet commentary - instead of criticized by those who can't be bothered to - it is actually quite amazing for the role it was intended. Thanks for covering this - I hope this cartridge catches on - I feel much better with my wife carrying this instead of 380 !! I have even considered it seriously for replacing my 380...it is a superior round to 380 for SURE !!
