Such a good listen. It's completely not right and it's not on you to make sure you don't get "unauthorized click activity". Also, the whole B.A.A. debacle with all the running RUclips channels is one of the reasons I don't care to ever participate in the Boston Marathon (One other reason is the fact that it starts at 10:00 a.m. and they won't change because they're "the Boston Marathon and they know it".
This reminds me of how Jenny Nicholson (huge youtuber) tried all the normal channels of contacting Disney for getting photos she paid for at one of their amusement parks but they said she couldn't do anything. She legitimately tried to use all the normal channels of customer support to see if she could get her money back.... so she finally tweeted about it to her huge following and magically someone from Disney called her directly to resolve it. It sucks that your regular person can't get help with getting money back and these large companies can legit just steal from you with no true course for action.
I work in SEO so this doesn't surprise me at all. Google has the worst policies when it comes to Ads and Business Profiles. Absolutely ridiculous, I hope it all gets figured out eventually!
Not to play devil's advocate, just trying to help - but I seem to remember you guys doing an episode early on that was like "Help Get us Monetized" and y'all talked about having it on loop in the background to help get your view hours up. Could it have been that?
That’s honestly a great point!! We had that thought too when we first started to dissect all of this. We ruled that out for a few reasons, primarily around the way Google defines “invalid click activity.” If our subscribers were watching the show in the background, even if on a loop, that’s fairly normal behavior. I’ve done that exact same thing before when listening to other podcasts, because I’m just so invested in the show. Being a fan that listens to a show a lot shouldn’t be a penalty against the show itself. Additionally, all of those subscribers are legitimate people, and not “suspicious” accounts, which seemed to be part of what informed Google’s decision here. Probably most important, though, is the amount of ad clicking that took place, which is what the “invalid click activity” seems to be referring to. If fans were listening to the show in the background before we were even monetized, there wouldn’t have been ads for them to click; which means this must have happened at some point post-monetization. It’s all so multi-layered, and confusing, and annoying haha 😂 But we really appreciate you mentioning that, because it was where our heads went, too! Appreciate you taking an interest in this and for watching the episode 😊
