eh... sometimes the most beautiful poetry sounds incredibly dumb and cheesy in English subs. i think its better to just get lost in the voice and feel.
Translation : How could I burn the letters that have your fragrance How could I burn the letters that are drowned in love How could I burn the letters written by your hand The ones that I protected from the eyes of the world The ones that I kept close to my heart all my life The ones that I considered as my faith and my conscience How could I burn the letters that have your fragrance The ones that I remember every word in them The ones that I have memorized all the messages The ones that are dear to me like a priceless souvenir How could I burn the letters that have your fragrance The ones that you wrote hiding from the eyes of the world The ones that you wrote for me year after year The ones that you wrote day and night for me How could I burn the letters that have your fragrance How could I burn the letters that are drowned in love How could I burn the letters written by your hand Today I've dropped your letters in the river Ganga Today I've dropped your letters in the river Ganga I've started a fire in the flowing water GHAZAL JUST SOUNDS SO BEAUTIFUL , ITS LIKE BREATHING !!
Ghazals , unlike sufi songs , aren't usually spiritual . They're love songs, "laments of the broken heart " usually. In this song the poet/singer says ," how could I have burnt those letters steeped in your fragrance" as the main line .
He is a "Gazal" singer it's not about vocal excellence but lyrics are most imp. part, the only rule is- it should reach every corner and deepest part of ur Heart❤️.
The lyrics are HEAVENLY!!! He is talking about the difficulty of burning the letters written by his beloved that still carry her fragrance. Presumably, he couldn't do it. Maybe his beloved left him; therefore, he wanted to burn her letters.
This is a high level of Indian music/ art style - ghazal. From classical music components to beautiful poetry to purity of singing. There is a lot going on there which you simply can’t comprehend by watching a video without any context.
Jagjit Singh Sir is Master of Gazals in india. Whenever you hear him it create a realm of peace and take you to the journey of out of the world. My words are less to describe his legacy.
You should check out Koi fariyaad by Jagjit singh. More so because so many modern singers like Atif, Arijit, Vishal Mishra and more have covered it live in their concerts. So check out all the versions as well. Not for comparison or anything, but more so to appreciate the song itself
You have to understand the words of jagjit Singh songs to really feel it...his voice is hypnotic..but it's the words that add to the magic..he is timeless❤❤❤
Jasjit Singh had a unique style of singing, characterized by his melodious voice and nuanced phrasing. He was highly regarded for his ability to convey the deep emotions and subtle nuances of Ghazals, and his performances were known to move audiences to tears. Some of his most popular Ghazals include "Hosh Walon Ko Khabar Kya", "Chitthi Na Koi Sandesh", and "Kal Chaudhvin Ki Raat Thi". He was also a versatile singer, known for his ability to sing in different languages and genres. Jasjit Singh's contributions to the world of Ghazal music have earned him a place among the most revered singers in India. His legacy lives on through his recordings and the countless fans he has inspired over the years.
The Jagjit Singh The legend who kept the ghazal tradition alive in India and is still doing even after leaving this world. Every single one of his ghazals is a gem. Not just the music, but the lyrics and the associated emotion with those lyrics, the simplicity. When you understand them all together, it's nothing less than a meditative experience. ❤️❤️ He will always live in our hearts forever.
Beauty of Gazal = 50% vocal and music + 50% lyrics... If u r listening to a gazal try to read translation simultaneously... Because when the pitch goes up or down, it reflects the mood in the lyrics... I guess u understood what I meant..
Gazals are all about falling in love, longing for the love at distance, losing that love, breaking into pieces in love and going through life with the scar that the world cannot see
There is yet another singer in picture. The one in black dress with gold work. His name is Anoop Jalota. Yet another singer of ghazals, you may want to watch.
please Search ceremony for Jagjit Singh after his death all Bollywood singers sang his songs from somu Nigam to Punjabi singers ...in front of chitra sing....
Ghazal is not a worsipping genre type of thing. It's poetry that is decorated on a raag. And his physical motion can be seen when his hands move on harmonium by itself in the notes while singing it's not intentional. He sees notes in front of him and pressed the keys his hands have mykuscle memory for that.
Ghazal singing is a semi classical genre of south Asian music. Although sometimes ghazals lyrics may be written for singing, but more often it is not. A ghazal is basically a genre of poetry. In that sense, the words are not lyrics. The ghazal writers are generally not lyricists , but poets. All the master poets have written ghazals abundantly. Collections of their ghazals are printed in books. Ghazal is a highly refined form of poetry, and comes in rhyming couplets (two liners). Often the subject is love, but not limited to it. It can include philosophical subjects, and deals with feelings, human experiences, worries, concerns, joys. Overwhelming number of ghazals do not end up being sung in music pieces. So a highly refined genre of poetry meets semi classical music in ghazal singing. This genre is now less popular and not many good quality recordings may be available. Some rare recent renditions have attempted to bring ghazal singing up to date. It is essentially a vocal genre with minimal musical accompaniment. A tabla is used for percussion, and and one or two drone instruments to provide the backdrop. It excels in exploring the various nuances of the words and phrases and feelings associated with them, while remaining true to the raag. Recent greats exponents include Mehdi Hasan, Ghulam Ali Khan, Jagjit Singh, Farida khanum and many others. One of the oft covered Ghazal is 'Mohabbat karne wale' originally sung by Mehdi Hasan. Searching for that will come up with lots of results. Jagjit Singh's ghazals of Ghalib (poet, d 1868), composed for a drama on the poet's life are fine specimens. At present, there are many fine exponents of the form, but ghazal does not have a big presence in the popular music. It is mainly consumed by enthusiasts and aficionados. As an introduction, You may want to listen to Ali Sethi's (coke studio season 10) 'modern' rendition of 'Ranjish hi sahi', and 'Gulon mein rang bhare' (season 12). Arooj Aftab won a grammy (2022) for her rendition of 'Mohabbat'. Her rendition breaks new ground and is not along traditional lines. Tanya Wells, a British singer has also covered some ghazals fairly well. you can sample her cover of 'gulon mein rang bhare' here, ruclips.net/video/Lw-ZrBb7URY/видео.html. This particular one is without accompaniment.
It's an informal gathering of musicians singers all talents are sitting in the same room including Anoop Jalota..you should listen to him as well although he is famous for devotional songs but he has sung Sone awesome ghazals.
Please also react to Anup Jalota who is sitting next to Jagjit ji....... he's also an amazing legend.....his voice just melts in your ear....very beautiful voice
I just realized this - it's not uncommon for a significant number of musically inclined Indian households in the US to have mixers, microphones, speakers, PA systems, and the like. I would imagine it's EVEN MORE common in India where classical musical royalty regularly interact with people in the music and film industries in very informal ways. So yeah, a jam session like this just happening impromptu at a dinner party? That's just normal. LOL.
Dear @Waleska-Herrera, Nice to see your review on the video that I posted..!! Yes indeed it's one the most cherished moments of my life to hear Jagjit Singh Uncle so closely and to have known him and receive his blessings. He was indeed a real artist and a great human being. I'm glad that by reviewing this video, you could share about such a Great Artist to other parts of the world too ❤️🙌 Infact it was his Death Anniversary on 10th October and I dedicated a video on his life history for all his fans 👇 ruclips.net/video/vVEJ3bb4bp8/видео.htmlsi=Wi6SBvKmjed730ZQ Wishing All The Best, God Bless 🫶🤗
There are 2 types of translations especially when it comes to song/poetry. The literal translation AND the message(spirit) of each sentence being conveyed. IDEALLY if you’re truly interested - you put both translations side by side and you will be closer to experiencing the depth of the song/ghazal/poetry. Hope I don’t sound too nutty but I’ve not often been close to satisfied with the subtitles I see on Hindi content.
Quick note, the gentleman to the left of Jagjit Sir , in black and gold is Anup Jalota. A great singer in his own right. ruclips.net/video/evHMd7KgP_0/видео.html
Have you reacted to koi fariyad by jagjit Singh????? If not, then I highly recommend this song, cuz it's an absolutely amazing, romantic, emotional, and truly a masterpiece. Plus, one of my most favourite songs to listen to whenever I'm feeling down. Additionally, one more song which i think is fantastic is - "ek taraf uska ghar" by pankaj udhas. Do check that out too.
Just putting it out there - maybe you might consider a guest appearance of a person whose 1st language is Hindi and get them to verbally translate the song for yourself and your audience. But may be not? since the people here all seem to be a Hindi speaking anyway. Jagjit Singh is EVERGREEN.
Music 101: Never listen to Jagjit Singh without subtitles!!
Agree 💯
the beauty of Gazals lies in the lyrics....
So true
@Rohan Bapat - I second you !

Translation :
How could I burn the letters that have your fragrance
How could I burn the letters that are drowned in love
How could I burn the letters written by your hand
The ones that I protected from the eyes of the world
The ones that I kept close to my heart all my life
The ones that I considered as my faith and my conscience
How could I burn the letters that have your fragrance
The ones that I remember every word in them
The ones that I have memorized all the messages
The ones that are dear to me like a priceless souvenir
How could I burn the letters that have your fragrance
The ones that you wrote hiding from the eyes of the world
The ones that you wrote for me year after year
The ones that you wrote day and night for me
How could I burn the letters that have your fragrance
How could I burn the letters that are drowned in love
How could I burn the letters written by your hand
Today I've dropped your letters in the river Ganga
Today I've dropped your letters in the river Ganga
I've started a fire in the flowing water
GHAZAL JUST SOUNDS SO BEAUTIFUL , ITS LIKE BREATHING !!
बहुत अच्छा अनुवाद किया है आपने। इसके बावजूद इस ग़ज़ल के बोल में जो गहराई है उससे अंग्रेजी में बयां कर पाना बहुत कठिन है।
