For the British Trials scene definitely have to give Martyn and Martin a shout out too. Chainspotting made me and i suspect a ton of other young riders in the mid to late 90s take to Trials in a massive way a decade before Danny mac. I suspect Danny mac was also part of this first push. dropper post as someone who climbs and then descend mountains on an XC bike sometimes on "sit on the rear tire" steep it's such a game changer I have trails with (almost) 100% slope down followed almost immediately by 20% climb I had to stop every time to change my height, not anymore
Bowhead encapsulates everything I love about MTB. It's the sport for everyone and the Bowhead AMTB is the best example of that. Every time I ride I get to meet so many awesome people from all walks of life (no pun intended), it's the beauty of the sport.
The shout outs for the AMtB’s was perfect. I think they need more attention. First time I saw one was down in Bentonville, AK, and it looked like the guy was having an absolute blast taking on tougher trails than I was
I can understand the shoutouts to Shaun Palmer and Missy Giove, but there have been so many other notable racers - Greg "H-Ball" Herbold, Hans Rey, Juli Furtado, Steve Peat, Ned "The Lung" Overend, Tinker Juarez, Jon Tomac........so many legends.
@@gmbn two lists: riders and innovators. MTB is a sport that could use more attention on the history. @matthewfuller1129 lists great riders - Tomac and Furtado rode XC and DH! But think GMBN highlighted 2 that "changed" the sport. Minnaar might be the GOAT but not sure he "changed" the sport - at least not the way Giove and Palmer did.

They certainly brought their own style of bike handling, and attitude, that has influenced DH more significantly. Even John Tomac who was pictured in every publication for years, and won in every type of event was a former BMX racer. BMX's influence cannot be understated!
I remember it well when Missy the Missle got nailed with over 350lbs of weed during a traffic stop in NY. That is a ton of weed……yet fitting for Missy and her dudette personality. Now adays, 350lbs of weed is your average mountain bike festival in Colorado or Vermont 😂

Maverick duc fork, sweet wings cranks, 29x3.0 tires, sram bassworm, hammerschmidt, swobo, tiogo yellow Kirin, shin burgers, turner rfx and sultan. Too many cool things the bike industry has created!
Actually rode a 1996 AMP Mongoose B-3 (the original Horst Link bike) for a few seasons, and it erased bumps like no other (the AMP fork, however didn't! and was replaced by the first RS Judy, which was incredible back then too - then replaced with a Answer Manitou FS-Ti Sean Palmer edition fork - bling!!!!).....I was so fond of Horst Link that I plunked down for a 1998 Turner Burner....then a Turner 5-Spot, and today - my two bikes in the garage are still Horst Links - a GT Sensor and a Transition Relay. Even today, the Horst Link is still an awesome suspension system (just ask Neko from Frameworks!)....still not a fan of DW-Link, but it's great we have so many fantastically good choices these days (so much better than it used to be)
I still have my mongoose iboc team SX with the amp fork, also rode a AMP b3 my boss had one of the first delivered units , I was supposed to get the bike at the end of the season but he kept it.
i remember when the Spuds came out, picked up a set of the 525 and 737's.. eventually settled on some SIDI dominators, been riding them for so long i find it difficult to rice with just bear traps. I would have to say the one thing that changed MTB for ever was not the equipment, it was the crash of the aerospace industry in the early 90's and the availability of cheap 3d axis CNC machines.. these allowed the world to anyone with a dream to design and produce parts.. so many damn parts, mid 90's magazines were filled with new products monthly.
Surely the invention of the bike park was a gamechanger too. Especially introducing the concept of using gondolas and chair lifts. It inspired brands to make gravity specific bikes that don't have to worry about riding up hill
@@gmbn- riding position is still hidebound into “attack position” using low, wide albatross bars that seem dictated by fashion. Hopefully (or maybe I don’t care actually, but for product availability), the MTB world figures out it has more to gain from motocross style risers than roadie style (Gary had this one sorted back in the day). I run a 100mm rise bar - the Cannondale Cruise Control - and never going back. Also, today’s wide bars are inexplicable to me, but maybe they make sense if you’re only riding downhill at bike parks with an average speed of over 25 mph.

I went from hating tubeless systems to loving them! I’m not sure if the technology finally got good enough or I just found the right combination of rim and tire. My combo of enduro Mazza tire and Stans flow rim w e-sync hubs is finally something that actually works!
I refuse to change my 2016 mtb because it's 3x11 and for what I do long plain followed by cat1 or hc road climbs (last time 5.5km@13%avg up to 18%) then descent on trails I need both the max speed on flat and the easiest to climb, I just got a 1x12 sram on an ebike which I often pedal in OFF on flat it works but you lose on both ends for sure altough I blame the weight and trail tires more than the 1x12 to be honest
Balance bikes are a great shout! We'll stand by tubeless though! Punctures used to be a huge part of most rides for many of us, but now, we've not suffered from them consistently in years
@@gmbn i see your point.. tho i would still argue that balance bikes has ‘progressed’ the sport more so than tubeless.. i don’t know how much riding and riders have changed much due to tubeless.. maybe there are results showing races are won more on tubeless or something similar to that.. but balance bikes have taken, often years off the progression of a persons riding.. the level of talent that younger kids are showing is outstanding.. i can’t help but feel that balance bikes have had the biggest impact on that.. maybe 🤷♂️ i dunno lol
Next game changer: Full Sealed Cartridge Bearing (no bushings) pedals. I'm appalled that the big pedal manufacturers STILL build pedals exclusively with bushings...BUSHINGS!!! instead of bearings, yet the Chinese have figured out how to build pedals without them.
18:20 It’s funny with SRAM Trojan horsed everyone by making their universal derailleur hanger totally free for other companies to use. Then years later eventually released these electronic shifters. It meant that a majority of bicycles can use it since a lot of bikes used said UDH. Call it a tinfoil hat theory but they ingeniously played the long run cornering the market with it. I can’t wait until the full upgrade kit’s prices come down for us normal folk when other brands develop their own versions of electronic shifters. Sure you have to worry about the battery life but that can easily solved by just carrying extra batteries. They’re not giant like EMTB batteries are lol. The massive advantages of being able to shift under load perfectly every single time far outweighs the battery downside imo. Being able to shift with just a press of a button is also great.
Dropper posts and long wheelbase gave confidence that you weren't going to get thrown over the bars. But E=mtb² is the greatest technology ever. The magic of Emtbs is that they turn us into gleeful kids again and multiply the joy of one of mans greatest gravity cheating inventions the bicycle. They are a Time Machine. "Downhill both ways" E=mtb². Purists run the trails barefoot. But is my new Amflow pro E=mtb³
My biggest game changer in MTB would have to be the through axle. The stiffness and reliability they brought to the sport has allowed us to take it to the extreme. The Airforce 1 however is my all time game changer for all cycling. A safe effective helmet absolutely without any doubt opened the gates for true madness. By keeping riders safe it allowed riding to get crazier and bikes to get better.
I'm 43 , so the game changes I saw were , suspension forks , disc brakes then full suspension bikes , then disc brakes then dropper posts then 1x drive trains . Now I'm seeing e bikes

Hi guys. You spent 5 minutes praising Dave Weagle for his dw link. The VPP suspension design was invented by Outland bikes in the early nineties. Santa Cruz purchased the patent and began building bikes utilising the design to this very day. The Dw link is just a copy of VPP. You praise DW when all he did was buy a photocopier.
why is 1 chainring at front better ? i think 2 chain rings is ideal... big slope sudently? just slap the derrailuer to lower chain ring and you saved your self some time ... i don't think there is a huge benefit of going 1 chain ring only ... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ oh well
In fact, aren't hydraulic disc brakes the main bit of bike tech that was developed for mtn bikes and then was adopted by road bikes, rather than the other way round, as it was in the beginning?
I agree with nearly everything on there except Shaun Palmer. He did not make the sport cool and quite frankly he was far from a role model. I've never known so much hype over a guy finishing 2nd! He got all the credit when Nico should have since he was the one who won! Also he had no staying power. He was a flash in the pan and that was it. I still cannot believe that even today people don't see him for what he actually was.

Getting rid of square taper cranks was a pretty big upgrade for me as well as double wide chainrings

I refuse to change my 2016 mtb because it's 3x11 and for what I do long plain followed by cat1 or hc road climbs (last time 5.5km@13%avg up to 18%) then descent on trails I need both the max speed on flat and the easiest to climb, I just got a 1x12 sram on an ebike which I often pedal in OFF on flat it works but you lose on both ends for sure altough I blame the weight and trail tires more than the 1x12 to be honest
If it ain't broke don't fix it!
I made my own early dropper identical to the hite rite before they existed. Boy did I miss out.

Balance bikes are a great shout! We'll stand by tubeless though! Punctures used to be a huge part of most rides for many of us, but now, we've not suffered from them consistently in years

@@gmbn i see your point.. tho i would still argue that balance bikes has ‘progressed’ the sport more so than tubeless.. i don’t know how much riding and riders have changed much due to tubeless.. maybe there are results showing races are won more on tubeless or something similar to that.. but balance bikes have taken, often years off the progression of a persons riding.. the level of talent that younger kids are showing is outstanding.. i can’t help but feel that balance bikes have had the biggest impact on that.. maybe 🤷♂️ i dunno lol

Next game changer: Full Sealed Cartridge Bearing (no bushings) pedals. I'm appalled that the big pedal manufacturers STILL build pedals exclusively with bushings...BUSHINGS!!! instead of bearings, yet the Chinese have figured out how to build pedals without them.
Imagine bushings in your bottom bracket....or wheels, lol
I think most pedal buyers don't even know their pedals utilize 5,000 year old engineering.

18:20 It’s funny with SRAM Trojan horsed everyone by making their universal derailleur hanger totally free for other companies to use. Then years later eventually released these electronic shifters. It meant that a majority of bicycles can use it since a lot of bikes used said UDH.
Call it a tinfoil hat theory but they ingeniously played the long run cornering the market with it. I can’t wait until the full upgrade kit’s prices come down for us normal folk when other brands develop their own versions of electronic shifters.
Sure you have to worry about the battery life but that can easily solved by just carrying extra batteries. They’re not giant like EMTB batteries are lol. The massive advantages of being able to shift under load perfectly every single time far outweighs the battery downside imo. Being able to shift with just a press of a button is also great.

My biggest game changer in MTB would have to be the through axle. The stiffness and reliability they brought to the sport has allowed us to take it to the extreme.
The Airforce 1 however is my all time game changer for all cycling. A safe effective helmet absolutely without any doubt opened the gates for true madness. By keeping riders safe it allowed riding to get crazier and bikes to get better.

I'm 43 , so the game changes I saw were , suspension forks , disc brakes then full suspension bikes , then disc brakes then dropper posts then 1x drive trains .

Hi guys. You spent 5 minutes praising Dave Weagle for his dw link. The VPP suspension design was invented by Outland bikes in the early nineties. Santa Cruz purchased the patent and began building bikes utilising the design to this very day. The Dw link is just a copy of VPP. You praise DW when all he did was buy a photocopier.

why is 1 chainring at front better ? i think 2 chain rings is ideal... big slope sudently? just slap the derrailuer to lower chain ring and you saved your self some time ... i don't think there is a huge benefit of going 1 chain ring only ... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ oh well

I agree with nearly everything on there except Shaun Palmer. He did not make the sport cool and quite frankly he was far from a role model. I've never known so much hype over a guy finishing 2nd! He got all the credit when Nico should have since he was the one who won! Also he had no staying power. He was a flash in the pan and that was it. I still cannot believe that even today people don't see him for what he actually was.
