After looking through this box I think I paid a bit too much. I was not able to see this in person before buying, they did not allow people to preview. I would say the box is worth about $200, the top is a bit crusty. Let me know what you think? PS - I said I bought these in October, my mouth was trying to say Apri and messed up. LOL
Side note, this video was recorded inside. It seems a hair grainy. I think I need to work on my lighting!
If you wanted a time capsule of what shade tree mechanicing 30 some odd years ago was like that box is peak. You basically can't get what's in that box anymore. The condition of a lot of those tools is untouched too. Like you walked onto Sears and bought it yourself. It's something that's just gone now. It sure made me feel nostalgic. I'm on the fence for what the monetary value of any of it is today. The warranty is basically over for all of that stuff. You can't play the walk into Sears and exchange it game anymore. That's a game I didn't play myself but most folks did. The one time I did try to legitimately exchange a Craftsman tool they gave me a hard time and I was done with Sears. But I never much cared for Craftsman tools anyways.
$200 for the roll cab alone being a ball bearing is fair. I think you did ok based on the rarity of the big wrenches anymore, and also to find hammers that nice isn’t common. Love the videos, diehard Craftsman collector since age 12 here from Wisconsin.
They had about 10 toolboxes in this sale, this one must have been one they hardly ever used. You can get the tools warrantied, but you will get the Chinese or Taiwan version they make now. Strange you had an issue with Sears, I brought back many tools back in the day and they never questioned it. Thanks for watching!
I agree on the toolbox. The big wrenches in this condition are very hard to find. I am in the Madison area. Thanks for the kind words and thank you for watching!
The little black plastic star shaped part that was in the first top box is a love joy coupling element
Wow! Good call! Someone always knows what something is. Thanks for watching!
I would love to see any methods you have to cleaning the old plastic handles
On things like pliers or screwdrivers?
I've bought a couple tool lots over the years and built up my tool kit from estate sales. (I'm only 31). But my best find was a 300 dollar deal filled up a whole 5x8 utility trailer sold off $200-$300 worth of tools i didnt need at a yard sale. Then found two mint 1990 $100 bills when i was cleaning out the tool box years later underneath the foam mat. There was so much cool stuff in those boxes the guy designed / worked on ABS brakes for Kelsey Hayes
I've noticed that all of these old tool boxes never have metric in them . But thats okay. There's always harbor freight for that
I don't think you did too bad on your purchase. Just imagine if you had to buy all of that stuff at today's prices
The hunt is most of the fun! The best way to build a large set is to buy used. I get most stuff for 25-40% of new. Your money goes a lot further. I also sell off excess to buy more. Thanks for watching!
Not a bad haul. The large size Craftsman SAE combination wrenches came as a 5 piece add on set. It was 15/16”, 1”, 1 1/16”, 1 1/8”, and 1 1/4”. I got it as a Birthday present along with a Craftsman 3/4” drive socket set from the guys in the scene shop back in 2001. 23 years later I still have it all. Keep up the videos
Makes sense, I probably bought the set back in the day. The 3/4" set is always nice. I have little use for it but nice to have around. My buddy started messing with old gas pumps, he always needs big sockets. Thanks for watching!
@@thetoolbandit in the entire time I have had the 3/4” set I have used it maybe 3 times. It is great to have when you need it.
@@thetoolbandit Not entirely correct. The large add on set SKU #46939 was 1", 1-1/16", 1-1/8", 1-1/4" and 1-5/16". There's a metric version, SKU #46940 which had the larger metric units with skips. I've made a few sets over the years.
I seem to have a lot of tools I only use once every 3-5 years. LOL
I have two boxes I work out of in my garage. One has 90% of the tools I always need, the other has the 10% I hardly ever touch.
Nice Haul! Those craftsman wrenches are in amazing condition and the XL sizes are hard to get.
Hard to get in this condition for sure. Thanks again for watching, I have some catching up to do on your last haul!
I agree on wrench condition and size. Most are barn crusty or well abused.
Some serious bucks in the qty of v wrenches!
My marketplace Craftsman listings lately are ravenous.
The box will go on Marketplace, and they usually don't last long but I also put them at a good price. I will probably start this one at $225-250. I have not tried selling tools on there. Thanks for watching!
18:22 over the years I have used that craftsman long handle, stubby flat nose COUNTLESS TIMES but really never as a screwdriver 😂. I really works great for popping open acetone cans and other such fluids as well as a small pry bar, due to the heavy tip and longer handle. Nice haul!
I have my lacquer thinner bottle openers as well! I find a lot of screwdrivers with many different paint colors. LOL. Thanks for watching!
Love watching your tool hauls!!!
Glad to see you always pop back in!
It’s still a pretty awesome haul! You win more often than you lose. Thanks for Sharing!
Thank you! As always thank you for watching!
Western Forge made the punches and chisels for Sears. They will be marked with a "WF" on them. That upper box is a homeowner grade 1970s/1980s Waterloo "706" model prefix made unit. You are missing the lock bars that prevent the drawers from opening. They can be made from flat stock if you can't find them elsewhere (or they aren't with the unit somewhere). Craftsman pliers with a "WF" are made by Western Forge and the later ones have a letter code to denote the date of manufacture (I have a chart that tells you the code and year that came directly from information I got from a long time WF employee before they closed). Craftsman pliers with a "P" maker's mark are made by Wilde of Hiawatha, KS.
Those locking pliers would have an "I" maker's mark in a circle which would denote that Parker Manufacturing of Worcester, MA made them for Sears. Locking pliers were made by them (I circle) Petersen-DeWitt (the patent number can be reversed to find that out) or the Adjustable Clamp Company of Chicago, IL (mostly the "laminated style" units). Yes, Midwest made snips for Sears. I know this for a fact because I spoke to an employee there who confirmed it.
I believe Ridgid made that pipe wrench for Sears, and also WF may have been involved as both were owned by Emerson at one point. Ullman Devices of Ridgefield, CT made that magnetic pickup tool for Sears. I couldn't find a Craftsman version, so I wrote to Ullman and the president of the company sent me an Ullman one along with his business card and a note of thanks via e-mail for being a good customer. Great company.
No, the top box doesn't have a lock, because it has a hasp. That's how the cheap ones were done back then. Later versions of those had locks. Keys are a plus, but many Ebay sellers can make them up by just furnishing the code stamped on the lock face. Fort Lock was the supplier to Waterloo in many cases. The Craftsman flat blade 'stubby" that you showed was made by Pratt-Read with the "PR" maker's mark. WF eventually bought them. Yup, Parker Manufacturing of "I" maker's mark fame likely made the hacksaw for Sears. Likely KD Tools made the battery post tool for Sears.
Vaughan-Bushnell with the "M" maker's mark made Craftsman hammers and was a vendor of theirs for decades. I recently read that they are going out business. I'm sure losing the Craftsman contract years back (when Sears started sourcing overseas) didn't help. Yes, SKU #46939 was the large five piece add on set and SKU #46940 was the large metric add on set. I have several of them that I've made over the years.
The Craftsman impact gun appears to be an "875" model prefix unit. That was Florida Pneumatic who had an arrangement with Fuji of Japan to import air tools. They were located in Jupiter, FL.
Thanks for all the info! Some I knew, some I did not. I do believe I heard Vaughan is going away as well. It is amazing to look through an older box and realize almost every tool maker is now gone or moved to Taiwan/China. Thanks for watching!
@@thetoolbandit Yes, I enjoy going through the old boxes and finding treasures like that. It's amazing how much junk gets accumulated in there. I have buckets for hardware, so I put the metric in one bucket, the SAE in another, toss out the trash, and then look for the saleable items. I've found some auto parts in many boxes that I've flipped for a profit, making the box less costly for free.
Most times, you'll find all the pieces of a set, just scattered about. That's the treasure hunt.
That top craftsman home owner grade tool box is very similar to mid 88-early 90's Kennedy mechanic tool chest
@@richardbates2367 Those homeowner grade units REALLY got cheap as the years went on. This one isn't that bad, but the later versions aren't so hot. I have one, but I use it for light duty/parts storage, not for tool storage. I have mostly the gray/red and red/gray Craftsman combinations with the spring steel clip slides in my "fleet".
I think you did all right I understand when you think you might have paid too much especially when you have a mountain of tools already I don't have a mountain of tools yet but sometimes I feel the same way I guess that's when you sell my problem is is I very seldom do and when I do it's just so I can buy more tools it's definitely an addiction lol thanks for sharing my friend take care
It's an absolute sickness. Yes, I sell some to buy more! This is not a bad deal but not good deal. Had some good pieces for sure. It is always a gamble buying when you can't preview. Thanks again for the continued support.
@thetoolbandit you're welcome my friend take care
I see I have some catching up to do on your latest videos! You take care as well!
You usually come out ahead. I think in value you may come up short or possibly break even but not a terrible haul. A lot of good and useful tools in there. 🤙🏽
Not terrible but far from a homerun! A lot of wrenches I don't have! Thanks for watching!
What made Craftsman valuable was the warranty plus the tools were half decent. But now the warranty is pretty much over and done with. If you have the original receipt I hear they're still honoring it. So I'd say it's done. Even if you could get an exchange what are they going to give you now? Far eastern stuff. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the far eastern stuff but it's still going to stick out like egg rolls would in a pizzeria.
It is harder to get the warranty now. I think it is best to go to the Craftsman website, but I hear some people getting turned down if they claim too many items. If I had a set of Craftsman and something broke, I would buy another one used, to match. So yes, keeping the matched set days are gone if you get a replacement.
@@thetoolbandit nothing lasts forever. Even if Sears hadn't folded you can't expect them to maintain tool lines indefinitely. Even Snap-on doesn't do that. At least they couldn't for me. They gave me a later model tool they did have. I'm good with it.
Battery terminal puller
Did I call it a battery post puller?
The rubber parts might be for a pump of some sorts 🤔
Could be, I will have to research. Thanks for watching!
Do It Best is a Hardware store brand under HWI Do It Best
Yes! We have a few of them in the area, usually in smaller town. Thanks for watching!!
that 9/16 would be good for working on a toyota, its the drain plug size for the engine oil. Maybe they had a bunch of toyotas to work on?
It was from a farm, I'm thinking machinery but who knows. I would imagine older Toyota? Thanks for watching!
@@thetoolbandit Most Toyota (car at least) drain plugs are 14mm. I know because I have a 2024 Corolla in my fleet and I've already done an oil change on it (with less than 3,000 miles) and it's 14mm.
I was thinking he was talking about the old ones?
They were also metric.
They must have had a craftsman discount because all They have is Craftsman junk Eagle
some Craftsman wasn't so bad, some wasn't so good! Thanks for watching!
Also, do you sell on eBay?
I do sell when I get 4-5 deep in some items. I currently don't have anything listed from this box. Thanks for watching!
I got a tub of craftsman USA stuff I don't want $100 an u pay shipping I'll send them to u
I'm trying not to buy anything!! You can always email photos to thetoolbandit@gmail.com
A lot of junk for 650 bucks
Yes, the box had plenty of junk. They didn't have a preview, only a few photos. I took a gamble and may have missed a bit on this one. Thanks for watching!
@@thetoolbandit do you sell tool boxes
I could be misunderstanding. Did you say you bought the boxes in October 2024 and you’re making this video in September 2024? Wouldn’t that mean you bought the box in the future?
I picked it up in my DeLorean! That is too funny, I said it, I also listened to me saying it during the edit and I didn't catch it. I sure did say October, my brain was trying to say April. Thanks for catching that one. Thanks for watching!
@@thetoolbandit too funny. Happy Hunting!
How did you buy them in October 2024? 0:17
You don't have a time machine? You should download the plans! I meant April, LOL. Thanks for watching!
